There are many slightly differing theories about the origins of hockey, but it obviously wasn’t solely derived from hurling alone. It was more than likely a mix of various different stick and ball games like: hurling, shinty, bandy etc. What we do know is this: 250 years ago, an Irish principal in a school in Nova Scotia was training students how to play hurling. His name was William Cochran and he was originally from Tyrone. Because of the weather, they quickly changed to ‘ice hurling’. The first game of hurling in Newfoundland was played in St. John’s in 1775. In the 1871 Census of Canada, Irish people made up 24% of the population. And don’t forget, this doesn’t include Newfoundland’s population. Hence the spread of the sport of hurling, which was at the very least, a contributing factor to the sport of hockey.
I saw on a documentary once that one of the first recorded ice hockey games in Canada.was by a group of people from co antrim. Which has quite a proud hurling tradition so there could be a connection there
The funny thing about this is that you are absolutely right about the similarities but it is also just different enough from a standard Irish accent that it feels weird and my brain has a difficult time classifying it

AFL (Aussie rules football) also seems to be inspired by hurling in a lot of ways
