love the heavier interpretation of this classic song saw them play live when they first came to London lucky enough to see them live 3 times and sadly the last time in the Moonlight Club West Hampstead Just a month before he died. we saw him in the bar before the gig and had a quick chat. i was only 17 at the time and totally starstruck. He was and still is my hero
@@gothikserpentmusic Oh thanks for your reply! I've loved New Order since 1987, then naturally I got into Joy Division soon after. I went to study in Manchester in the early 1990s, and I met Peter Hook quite a few times. I actually got to DJ in the Dry Bar in 1993 (for free beer), and who should walk in, but Peter. Even though I was playing mainly house music, I brought a few Joy Division records if he turned up. I took out "Closer", and his friend saw it and shook his head as if to say "no, don't play that!". It was quite funny. I also met Bernard Sumner once...in a minivan of all places. It was a free minivan between the Dry Bar and the Hacienda. Can you believe it, he was worried the bouncers wouldn't let him in to the Hacienda! (I think he was a bit paranoid on something!).
I see this as a woman losing control of a relationship, her past, and the narrative of her life. That's why the fast pace is key, along with the refrain and the buildup to falling down at the end
It’s about Ian Curtis (the songwriter) seeing someone suffer and epileptic seizure which terrified him. He developed extremely severe epilepsy two years later which eventually led him to suicide
@@cameronlambert5185 I wish I knew why he committed suicide. But I don't. I do know he was dating someone else than his wife, and his band was about to leave for the US. It sounds like he was under a lot of pressure. Not sure why his seizures would make him commit suicide. He was doing quite well at the time, but certainly was personally under a lot of pressure with basically 2 families in Manchester and leaving the country for a huge tour.
@@imsnowedn from what I can tell part of it at least was down to his epilepsy stopping him performing, and he felt rlly guilty about his affair. I’ve also heard he was terrified of flying and so while he was excited for the us tour he was rlly dreading the plane journey

Thank you so much for watching and listening. Check out my new cover of ISOLATION: ua-cam.com/video/7o8M8GO30JA/v-deo.html
