Lifted 78 Firebird Custom Swaybar Links/Shock Mounts, DIY Front End Alignment (Ep.40)

  • We lifted this 1978 Firebird with S10 lift spindles up front and extended shackles and add-a-leaves in the rear, but there is still a lot of finishing work to get everything hooked back up! In this episode, we'll work on extending the rear swaybar links so that they can reach the further away axle, finding a way to mount a pair of long truck shocks, and testing some at-home alignment equipment on the terribly out of whack front end!
    Timeline of filming: June 6th, 2022 - August 16th, 2022
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):
    00:01 Scissor Vision - Letter Box
    03:04 Innocence - The 126ers
    07:49 The Opening - Dan Lebowitz
    12:45 Windows Rolled Down - The 126ers
    16:00 Lazy Afternoon Sun - Dan Lebowitz
    22:32 Humidity - Silent Partner

    "The lockwasher serves as a spring while the bolt is being tightened. However, the washer is normally flat by the time the bolt is fully torqued. At this time it is equivalent to a solid flat washer, and its locking ability is nonexistent. In summary, a Iockwasher of this type is useless for locking." -NASA Fastener Design Manual

      Yeah, typically I only use them as small diameter washers. Graded ones do have a little bite and offer a little preload, but it isn't significant compared to other (expensive) options and for the level of security that NASA demands.

    Ive been laggin too on installing my rear sway bar on my nova….i put a larger front one on a few years back along with subframe connectors and it made a night and day difference, i then did a shackle lift in the rear and had to use the shock extenders as well….i think im gonna lift it one more setting on the shackles to get that slight rake look and make sure the 275 tires dont rub when cornering or hitting a bump, and then and only then i should be ready to put on that rear sway bar!!!…..my subframe connectors are competetion engineering and look very identical to yours and i love them, i noticed a difference in my launches immeadiately after installing them!!! That firebird looks like its gonna be a hoot to drive when its ready, my nova too is supercharged but its not a big block, its just a bored out (370”) LQ9 with a LSA blower and 2.45” pulley…..its more than enough power but yet im currently building a 408” stroker to go into place of the 370” ….and then i will put the 370” into my vortech centrifugal supercharged ‘73 c10 shortbed fleetside that currently has a supercharged hi revving 4.8 in it…..and then the 4.8 will get a 5.3 crank and bored out to a iron LS1 and be put aside for a spare motor or possibly swapped into my sons ‘67 mustang when the 289 shits the bed…..im just gonna have to do some more research and freshen up my welding fab skills if i go that route…..or we can just build up a roller cam 302 motor out of a late 90’s explorer…which i convieniently have on hand!!!! Soooo many choices, i really dont know which way too go with it….i will probably just build up a roller cam 302 considering my son is just a young teenager and really doesnt need no more than 300hp tops in that car anyhow!!! Im pretty sure i have a couple of very short videos of those vehicles on my channel if you wanna check them out, i even painted them in my garage!!!

  • @mikemchaney1003
    @mikemchaney1003 Місяць тому

    Just for others watching and for your information.... stem to eyelet shock adapters are a thing and can purchased rather easily plus are cheap. Factory vehicles always use the shock to limit the down travel of the suspension. You will be fine with that. Rear sway bar should be parallel with the ground to be effective. You may look to put the bar over the top of the axle to get it out of the way. Alignment specs can be negative camber and you will not see tire wear if you stay around negative half a degree. You will find that factory specs have a wide range. Toe is what wears tires out faster. You need to have about 1/8" toe in.

    if you're planning on keeping the tires flat while cornering (especially inboard tire), you'll probably want to dial in -0.5 to -1.5 degrees of camber. that extra bit of contact patch is going to be sorely missed as you're already going to have enough problems with the weight on the front of that car wanting to push around corners lol.

  • @ryurc3033
    @ryurc3033 Місяць тому

    The whole time i was watching this, i kept thinking, man those are some really long sway bar links. Probably work out fine.
    I've gad really good luck with adapting 4x4 98-2003 s10 blazer/bravada sway bars to all kinds of vehicles. Front and rear.
    I realize the intent is to make this bolt on type if setup, and it looks like you succeeded in that.
    But if you need something beefier later, it might be easy enough to adapt.

    • @ryurc3033
      @ryurc3033 Місяць тому

      Also, highly recommend turn plates when doing anything with an alignment.
      It really helps make things more accurate because you're not fighting the tire on the ground.
      If no turn plates, roll the car forward and back, and measure again. I have a feeling it will probably need adjustment again after it's driven far enough to settle in.

      On a leaf spring car like this one, there really isn't much of a way to set or change the rear axle alignment, it typically is located by the leaves alone and kinda just sits where it sits.
