- In this video I prove why it pays to slow down and look at your data, gather the clues, plan the work and work the plan. I see it all to often where other shops "do the fuses," "do the grounds" and "do the relays," with no real direction. If you don't have a trail to follow it is just guessing. -Enjoy!

SMA proves that all vehicles can have problems, and the importance of knowing an honest mechanic. True pros over at SMA!
I don’t know any honest mechanics.

There are honest mechanics very far few and between but they can be found Eric O Is a very honest upfront great mechanic who cares about his customers as do most of us

Big difference in honesty and know-how, no guessing at the problem here at SMA.
Clever fix - well done. Snappy jokes, Mrs O, dogs, lunch, snacks, hunting tales. Another great SMA video.

He spent more time with Mrs. O than diagnosing the car 🤣🤣

Old guy I worked with went to his Volvo specialist friends workshop. When he walked up stairs, the apprentice was working on mechanics wife. She was a born again Christian, supposedly. Her friend was a born again tramp too, who lectured me against sex before marriage. I guess the devil made them do it.

Your diagnosis was ungrounded. But the repair was well grounded.👍🏻
My thoughts exactly. Eric O is a class act. The interaction with his wife is the icing on the cake! IMO the American dream. Stay safe and have a gr8 God bless day.
Took less time to fix the car than brown the meat.
Took a lot less time than towing it to his shop.
Big fan of the channel. I prefer watching your nerdy test light videos over anything on netflix. SMA keeps it 100
Thank you so much for this chanel, I just started at Mavis and wowed them all by solving a no crank on a bmw, it was a lost ground, they ended up replacing the starter and obviously didn't work. I knew it was something to do with a ground from a past video about voltage drop from you. They didn't trust me because I was a tire Tech or aka a lube tech. I went into the office the next day, told them I can get the bmw started in 5 mins. Got a jumper cable, plugged one onto the battery one onto the engine block and BLAM started. You have no idea how much your videos help me with cars I have and how informative they are, never change, your changing lives that you never met.

Also, if you didn't already switched to winter air, do that asap. Your tires will thank you.

Your the man Eric, allways good to watch and learn, any apprentice working for you should appreciate your teaching.
Your knowledge of vehicles and their sequence of operations are king. Another great job.
You always know it's the last one you check because when you find it you stop looking lol
No, it's always the last one. If Eric had tested the ground first, it would have been the positive supply that was bad. It's actually a quantum mechanics thing: the engine is in a superposition of all possible defect states (some number "N"), and N-1 possibilities must be eliminated before you find the cause. Same for a missing socket: Initially it exists in all drawers of your tool chest simultaneously, but as you search each drawer, the quantum waveform partially collapses so that the socket only exists in the drawers you haven't checked yet.
@@johnallen1901 You're making my brain hurt.

Your videos are the best. Learn so much even from ones I have seen before! Thank you for all your hard work and sharing. Watching you diagnose is so informative
Eric, as you demonstrate , always start with the basics. So many people tend to overlook this and want to go to the most obscure items. Swapping
parts or just can't grasp the foundation of electrical systems. I agree with you when you say "If I can do it so can you" it's too bad that most people
don't have the basic skills or confidence to even try !
You are a rare person in the trade, skilled, honest and humble. Keep up the good work !
Jay seems like a man I could be a best friend with.

THIS IS A COMMENT THAT I MADE TO ANOTHER YOU TUBER THAT HELPED ME TO GET MY VAN RUNNING. YOU ALSO HAVE HELPED ME EMMENSELY WITH YOU VIDEOS AND GOING THROUGH THE PROPER DIAGNOSES BEFORE THROWING PARTS AT IT AND HOPING IT WOULD START. THANKS SO MUCH. ALL THE COMMENTS I READ ABOUT YOU ARE SO GOOD AND HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO ACTUALLY HELP OTHERS.
Wow, great info. My 2002 chevy astro had the same symptoms as yours but I started to replace parts instead of diagnosing the problem. When it quit 6 weeks ago I used starter fluid to determine that I had spark and no fuel. So I replaced the fuel pump by cutting a hole in the floor to access it as I had a half tank of gas and no way of raising the van high enough . After that it ran for 6 or 7 days so I could finish a drywall job I was working on. Well it quit again (ruined the old battery by cranking to much so had to put in a new battery) and by watching you tube videos I started to throw parts at it as everyone had the solution. Because the new fuel pump was not working again I brought it back to the auto parts store and they replaced it no questions asked. Great warranty. But because of the end result the original replacement was probably still good. I started with a new coil, a new ignition control module, new crankshaft position sensor , new distributor with cap and rotor. Still no start. Watched more videos and saw that possibly all the grounds needed to be checked. I saw your video but oh well just another none solution so I thought. I was just about to replace the PCM computer as still no results. Then a few days later I saw your video again and remembered what you did. After a very frustrating day yesterday going over everything and then checking with a reliable local mechanic in the afternoon and quizzing him he said he could possibly look at it next week as he was swamped with repairs. Well here we go, I watched your video again and as a last resort what could I loose. Went and got some connecters and opened up the loom of wires just like you did and the rest is history. When i put the key in the ignition and turned it without cranking I had fuel gage now working and now a check engine light. Progress !!! Then went further and cranked it and IT STARTED ! Thank you so much for your knowledge. You saved me from going mad. This van has served me well for the last 15 years and I have been able to do all my own maintenance , but this last 6 weeks was a real challenge. Sorry for the long comment but I am truly grateful to you and thankful that you would share your experience. You have gained a subscriber.
As the son of an honest mechanic long passed, and mechanical myself...your integrity is refreshing. You are clearly living life to the best.
I'm moving to Avoca NY just so I can bring my car here when it breaks. 👍
Excellent job. You can't assume someone's troubleshooting was thorough or correct. If the shop had checked at the injector they would have known their eyes were lying to them. Chasing your tail can happen real fast.
As always, you're the best automotive circuit debugger on UA-cam.
Your tips about how to start on these troubles are spot on and the results show it. Great find. Keep it Simple. A lot of people go for the

Eric, out of all the mechanic channels I subscribe to, this one is my favorite. I appreciate your knowledge and have learned lots from your videos. Thanks.
