So some of you are probably trying to figure out why I would get rid of my 2017 Audi S3 for a 2016 Volkswagen VW Jetta GLI. I figured I’d put together a quick video to explain my reasoning for getting rid of the Audi.
The decision came down to three main factors: depreciation, value for your money, and something that is completely unrelated to cars. Student loans. Like many of you guys, I had quite a load of student loans from my undergrad degree. By selling the Audi S3, I was able to pay off all of my debt except for my mortgage. With all of this coronavirus stuff going on, it such a relief to only have to worry about a mortgage. I hope that all of you are safe, healthy, and still working through all of this.
Is it me or do these Audi’s tank in value like its nobodies business?
So I bought the S3 in the fall of 2016 for $53k out the door, paid it off in two years and watched the value of it plummet. By the time that I sold it to Carvana at the end of last year I was able to get $33k for it. So in the span of 3 years it lost almost 40% of its value. So basically, I wanted to offload it before it got below the $30k mark. I’m interested to hear how much value your Audis have lost over the years. Leave me a comment below and let me know what your numbers are. I’m also interested to know why these things depreciate so much. If you have an answer let me know down below.
When it comes to value, I started to feel like I could get many of the same features that the audi had for a lot less money. Yeah the GLI isn’t as good looking as the Audi and it doesn’t have the power or all wheel drive, but when it comes things that I use everyday like apple CarPlay, manual with the DSG paddles, opening the garage door with Homelink, the GLI has it. Speaking of Homelink, it used to drive me insane that the audi didn’t have home link and the GLI has it. I’m sorry, but for $50k the audi should have at least come with something this basic. I just felt like Audi nickel and dimed me for every possible feature. Another example of that was the folding side mirrors. You could only get that if you opted for the prestige trim, which is crazy to me.
Anyway. I’m not trying to bash on Audi here, because I still love the brand, but I just feel like I’m getting more value in my GLI.

ThatBlueS3 so you probably paid about $50k and with your trade, you sold at about 66% original value. The average car after three years sells at 58% of original value. You could have probably sold higher than a mass market dealer, but despite that you did well. And Audi’s also have higher reliability compared to VW despite being part of the same company which is why you get “more for your money”.

I bought a brand new rs3 and love it. It has every option except the black optic package. And I leased it and when the lease runs out I will purchase it just so I can keep the interest down low and I don’t have so much debt on my credit at once. I did a sign and drive because it actually doesn’t make since you put money down on a lease because you are just paying down the lease and you are no longer collecting interest on the money. I have already done a stage 2 tune. Now I am getting an intake, turbo inlet, haldex controller, turbo diverter, mid and down pipes.

Here is my take on this one.
I bought a brand new 2018 A5 Sportback with that in mind. I didn't buy that car to keep it for couple of years. I got it because I knew I would hold on to it for at least 5-7 years.
I love that car and I know everything about that car, I never beat on it when the engine oil is cold or in very cold temps or drive it hard and then just turn it off, I let it cool down. I treat it like it's mine, which it is.
Not the same can be said about 3 year old car that came off a lease. People treat those cars like shit, because they know in 3 years they will give them back.
My car never seen a carwash, it's all done by hand by me.
Idk, maybe I'm just a bit crazy. Love my cars haha

See that was my intention with the S3. To drive it til the wheels fell off but things change in life and I realized that it just wasn’t as practical as I needed. Traveling was a pain because my wife and I couldn’t fit out two luggage’s in the truck. I think you’re in a much better position to keep yours long term since it’s a sportback. Lots of practicality with that thing.

Great video, thx for posting. Really well done. I was looking to get an Audi off a lease. Then i realized the GLI is a cheaper version of an A3/S3. The money that you save could tune this up to something impressive. So a slightly used GLI with a manual is a no brainer to me. Gotta have some money sitting around for repairs lol.
I would never ever buy a new car unless i factor in the depreciation or was willing to release that money into the universe. Makes more sense to me to get a GLI and mod it. That is if you drive aggressive or go to the track if u can find one. But then you might get stuck in the track car money pit and suddenly you have an expensive hobby.
Hopefully u didn't get the co vidd shot but most people did. I've been one of those "crazy" conspiracy guys since 1999 when i was in the Army and came across a late night AM radio show with Art Bell. Well time will show that we were right. Many more people are going to get sudden heart complications. You are in worse shape if u got boosters obviously. You can detox somewhat but not sure how far the detox protocol is. I know of some options.
I don't understand how so many people listen to and rely on the tv news for information. They are mega conglomerates with all sorts of nefarious agendas that do not ever benefit humanity. The exact same with trusting big farmaa. Before co vidd we all knew Merk and other companies were shady. But throw in a scary "virus" and suddenly they are our savior with a vacs that was magically created in record time smh.
It will all be revealed THIS YEAR and will go one of two ways. We win or humanity loses. PERIOD. Ok i'm triggered now lol. Nothing is more important right now. We are going to lose family and friends from this. That is guaranteed. Athletes are dropping on live tv. Media blows it off. Old relatives die so its blamed on their age. This is a literal spiritual war. We are not up against flesh and blood but principalities of pure evil. It is Biblical.
The truth does not match up with what we've been told our whole lives. We've been entertained by cartoons as kids. Netflix has slipped in a plethora of evil distractions. Dumb tv shows keep our minds contained. UA-cam instagram, facebook all there to keep us superficial and focused on the physical world. It's too much to explain in a random comment. Its a form of journaling i suppose. Hope you are doing well :)
Sad that the truth sounds like a schizophrenic rant. That isn't a coincidence.

interested to know if your GLI has depreciated in the last year? I have this exact same GLI autobahn and its worth about 9,000k now and thats high because used cars are in demand now. I've had a ton of problems with it but had an extended warranty that covered everything. also have a 2021 A4 premium which I love so much. felt the same way u did with the prestige so I skipped that and went with the lower price tag on a lease. cat wait to see what its worth at the end of the 3 yr lease. I do love my GLI still but trading it in soon while I can still get some $ for it. really dislike the 2021 style. 2022 looks better but won't actually be available until spring :(

I bought a 2015 Audi RS5 in 2018 I think it was, bought for 42k, sold 6-7 months later for 33k after dropping thousands to maintain the damn thing. It broke often.
I too was frustrated that my "80k when new" supercar didn't have touch screen and some other features and yet a cheap GTI or even base Golf has it. Really stupid.
I bought a 2016 GTI Autobahn and am currently in a 2017 Golf R and its a way way better experience than any Audi I have ever owned.

  • @ericotm
    @ericotm 4 роки тому +2

No one really buys a new RS3 thinking about value for the money. I do agree with the other two reasons though. Depreciation is not exclusive to Audi, most luxury brands depreciate quickly, as part of the appeal is to have a new car. BMWs are the same thing, maybe even worse. I always buy used - i bought a 3-year old Audi S3 (25K miles, still under warranty) for 45% less than what it sold when it was new. 3 years old is the sweet spot, more than that you might need to consider buying an extended warranty (especially for BMWs).

You managed quite well! I bought a used 2017 VW Passat from the local VW dealer after driving my 2008 Passat with only 74k! I kept my 2008 Passat because the depreciation was just too much! I think the newer VWs are a better value than Audis, I don’t understand why because Volkswagen owns Audi!

Just purchased a beautiful dealer serviced high mileage S3 for a bargain and sold my loaded 2019 Honda Ridgeline for the same reason. No more car debt is a great feeling. Plus the S3 is so much more fun to drive than a truck and I can still get kids in it easily.

Downgrading from S3 to GLI so you get pay off your other debts is very good financial decision and one you’ll never regret. Even if you were to downgrade to a $10k car like I did. I’d make that decision all day long,
BTW, you’re right about depreciation on Audi, I’ve picked up an 2010 A3 for $10k cdn last year. It had 160,000 kms but I checked the CARFAX and it was a one owner car. Which means the owner drove it every day without sitting in repair shop. Normally, a troubled car will get flipped over several times as owners just want to get rid of their problems. So after some years, hopefully get paid more, you’ll find the mortgage is smaller than what it was years ago, you’ll decide to get back into an Audi, I’d recommend a good used one and do your homework. Good luck
Also I checked out Canadian Black Book on a 2020 S3 with say 10,000kms. Value is $37k while MRSP is $59k same trim. When you lease out an new S3 for say $700 per month. The first $20,000 lease payments is just profit. It’s no reason, they smile when you hand the keys back at the end of the 36 month lease.

I've been reading a lot of posts over on the FB groups about the value of the S3s. I got bashed quite a few times for asking for the private sale KBB value on those groups, which led me down the Carvana path. It was pretty crazy because I kept an eye on the car after Carvana got it and they sold it within 4 days. Pretty crazy. But yeah, I'm so impressed with what Volkswagen gave us the GLI when it comes to value, and I know for a fact that the interiors in the GTI's are even better than the MK6 GLIs.

I'm guessing you owned the car for about 36-39 months and lost $20,000 in value? That's about $500-$550 per month which is lower than what you would pay for a 3 year lease anyway. In your case you should've probably leased since owning a brand new (german) car for 3 years means you ate the brunt of the depreciation as it'll retain it's value better after it hits $30k. In Canada the 2015 s3 was around $55k out the door and is worth about $28k 6 years later. In comparison my 2017 was about $50k fully loaded and is worth about $35k now.

You got rid of the Audi S3 because of high depreciation rate and got a VW instead.... Gotcha...

@@TheCenterLineAuto well yeah, your old S3 would probably be worth 39k-43k right now too, considering how crazy the market has been.

you can have 3000 reasons none would be valid! you had probably the best looking S3 on whole UA-cam! and you change it for a shit Jetta? 2 possible reasons 1 your getting a baby you need the money 2- you are bankrupt but in both situations you NEVER BUY A JETTA just keep the money then
