Yimou borrows gracefully from the Wizard of Oz in one respect: modern China is in black and white, and the meeting of his parents is filmed in glorious color. The movie, more than anything else, is about parents' love and filial duty.

I have a friend who I once ended up in an argument with after having told her about a screenplay I was writing and when I told her about it she just asked me when "something interesting" would happen. I can only assume that what she was talking about was a death or an explosion because what I was working on was definitely very much like the tone of this film. A short, simple glimpse at what simply finding the right person for you can do to change your life
