Crowther exactly no one else explains shit especially off of the low e especially about the b string thing.. they just fly through it cuz they already understand it but most the online teachers are so bad at explaining why things are where and what they are on the board and ways to retain this info. Just from how helpful this video was I’m gonna look to see if Ben has a beginner scale video so I can relearn them from him so I can remember more than the a minor like he said
Your videos have helped me improve more with advanced guitar techniques in the last year than I've been able to do on my own in the last decade. Thanks to you, the bank gave me my car back for cleaning up my sweeps, my wife came back to me for getting my hand synchronization on point and now, I'm really hoping my dog will come back to life after I get those sweet scales going all over the neck.
Dude. Thank you for explaining this in a way that made total sense! 5 million videos on UA-cam about the pentatonic and yours is the only one that really needs to be shared 🤘
Thanks a million Uncle Ben! I had been a guitar player for 34 years when I got hit with a rare brain tumor. It wiped all of my guitar knowledge and muscle memory. That was 2 years ago and I am still working my way back to proficiency. Your tutorials are a Godsend and I can't thank you enough.
Ben, you have quickly become one of my favorite teachers. Thank you for all you do and for teaching us easily understood and applicable techniques on the guitar.
You must be counting octaves, otherwise it would be 6 places (on a 24 fret guitar) for the lowest note and 5 (or less) places for the others. Example: High E (329.63 Hz) 24th fret, 6th string; 19th fret, 5th string; 14th fret, 4th string; 9th fret, 3rd string; 5th fret, 2nd string; Open, 1st string
Monster RAM I am actually, considering the lick shown spans from the first octave of the neck to the second, it just made more sense to say 12 than 6, (ex. 5th On the low E and 17 are both A notes, so yes, I’m counting octaves) but I never thought about it your way, interesting stuff man👌
Really have been enjoying watching your videos over the past year, you have taught me more in that frame of time than I was ever able to self teach myself from books and random videos. You are a wonderful teacher and you have a great stage presence...witty but intelligent. Easy to watch and very articulate, thanks Uncle Ben!
wow, excellent lesson! Breaks the boxes, by building smaller boxes. Genius. Your ability to recognize and deconstruct guitar player cliches makes your lesson work really accessible. Very cool.
Ha ha.You never stop learning. I'm 52, been playing guitar since starting classical guitar as a nipper. I thought that I'd used this scale, and thought of it each and every way possible over the years but I never made this simple connection. Way to go Ben and thanks. This is something that I know a few of my students are going to get a big help from. Cheers.
This was super easy to digest, learned as the video played. just paused a few times and rewound few times. And now I look at the fret board differently
I feel as if I have reach a paradigm shift in my playing after the secret of dealing with the “stupid B string. Uncle Ben, I am forever grateful for this simple yet effective explanation.
How can anyone possibly give a "thumbs down" to a very cool FREE lesson that's systematically broken down in a very simple, concise, and practical way, with variations for picking patterns also explained. Greetings to you from Ireland Ben, and I wish you lots of luck for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and great technique. Keep on doing what you do!....Tom thumb - (up).
Glad I found your videos.... you really explain things very clear and I've been playing 40 years... never too old to learn new things....I consider myself a hack because I never can sit down and just practice...my attention span is very short. I get in the habit of watching lessons that are way too advanced for my skill level and end up just watching. With your lessons I actually keep playing along and learn stuff that I should know in my sleep by now. Thanks for your help!!!!! Now maybe I can be that rock star I always dreamed about being 😂 😂 😂
Awesome vids Mr Eller! When I was much younger I became firmly entrenched in box shapes, all rooted from the low E. I haven’t played in so very long and I admit, I’ve been confined to the boxed in way of thinking. I’m much older now and have finally found the time to start working on this again. Yeah, I’m the “step dad” persona you refer to but I’m plodding through with great inspiration! I thank you for generously posting this educational material! Btw, any disciple of Paul Gilbert is someone I’ll pay close attention to. Keep the vids coming, and thanks! Merry Christmas!
Same here, man. All I had was the guitar of my sister and a book with the chord shapes. The worst part though: until youtube came up I really thought I was a decent player. Damn, was I wrong.
so i actually inadvertently figured out how to do that the right way. lol ..saw what everybody else was doing and decided not to do that but to do my own thing....so would start patterns all over the place and eventually connected it all together.i would also just reverse everything i played as well..if i descended i would then ascend the same..etc etc..did the same with bar chords and what i call octave chords..would switch them and then find what worked..then started putting them together in odd sequences and what not..and then i discovered poly rhythms and have been guitarded ever since...but listen to uncle Ben kids..dont do the self taught years of trial and error like i did..nope..just stick around and uncle Ben will hook you up..and remember your never done learning....ever...why i am here and checking out all the videos, looking for little things here and there to add to the tool box..even though i have played for 40 years or so..guitar is like an endless highway..with new stops along the way..thanks Ben....always take something away from your content...much respect.
You have a very good way of explaining this stuff-the kind of stuff that always intimidated me as a kid, and continues to as an adult. And even though i can understand what's happening, i can't imagine a time when i'll be able to know and remember it all at a level that would let me work with it in 'real time.' Shredding baffles me! I don't have the memory/mind for it 'at my age.' I need to just take it glacially slow, and hope i can retain things toward when it gets to be intuitive. Thank you for this perspective.
I thought I had a really nice guitar collection, but DAMN DUDE... you have a really diverse and amazing collection. I love your videos too. Great work!
These all fit within the 5 pentatonic scale shapes perfectly. Really nice technique to make moving around a little faster if you do not have all the scale shapes down across the neck in all positions perfectly (cause that ain't easy) but can work out the notes quickly.
Whoa, mind is blown. Not at first by this lesson, but by the link to Troy Grady. I finally got to the meat of his series (episode 9) and now know what you mean about pick slanting. Crazyiness is going to ensue! I love the way you are chunking this lesson up for us, now I get the value of your lesson. Shreddicus Maximus here I come!
Hey, Ben! Great video. This is just about exactly where I am in my guitar learning efforts. I now understand the mechanics of this scale. I just need to become faster. As always, thanks much for everything!
Anyone else think he chose C#minor because it let him say 9/11 so much? And WeekendWankShop?!? I'm dying! This guy is hilarious and I learnt a ton of new shit too. Subscribed!
This was a great video, Uncle Ben! One of the most informative lessons ever. So, by knowing where the root notes are, you can play the pentatonic scale all over the fretboard, but you don't necessarily need to know the other box shapes. This builds them in with some simple knowledge, just beware of that dumb B-string!
Ben you're a bloody likeable lad.
That's how all his friends mum's describe him ;o) ;o)
Wanker
When you watch videos like this, you realise it doesnt have to be as complicated as you think it is. Great lesson thanks 😊

Videos such as this go straight into my "guitar lessons" playlist.

This is the best video at explaining how to play across the fretboard with scales. Lightbulb finally turned on. Thanks!

You are the Best Teacher on UA-cam, thanks 👍👍
Nobody breaks it down like uncle Ben. Your videos are making me a little less of a disgraceful butcher each time. thanks man
When you take into account you can play the same note in 12 different places, licks like this become a lot clearer and funner, hectic lesson man!
You must be counting octaves, otherwise it would be 6 places (on a 24 fret guitar) for the lowest note and 5 (or less) places for the others. Example: High E (329.63 Hz)

wow, excellent lesson! Breaks the boxes, by building smaller boxes. Genius.
Your ability to recognize and deconstruct guitar player cliches makes your lesson work really accessible. Very cool.
Dude this just completely blew my mind and cleared up so much for me in terms of moving scales around. Thank you so much.
Ha ha.You never stop learning. I'm 52, been playing guitar since starting classical guitar as a nipper. The best explaination i have ever seen. Thank you.
"That dang minor Pentecostal scale"
Hahaha
Also enjoyed “Here’s the dumb b string”.
Uncle Ben... can you tab out and teach The Return Of The Son Of Shoogagoogagunga, they use the Pentacostal scales in that song a lot!
it's not that funny. Unless you're an american...
I prefer to play in Presbyterian mode.
ComboverSoul tig Oh, fuck off.
This was super easy to digest, learned as the video played. just paused a few times and rewound few times. And now I look at the fret board differently
Thank you very much Ben. Have a wonderful day.

Love how Uncle Ben always tells us what kind of guitar he's using in the description.
Also thank you for expanding my knowledge on scales, that hard core red pill 👌🏻
Your lessons are superb. Absolutely brilliant explanation.
this lesson is Pure Gold !!!
I appreciate your humor and teaching style! Thanks !
Glad I found your videos.... you really explain things very clear and I've been playing 40 years... never too old to learn new things....I consider myself a hack because I never can sit down and just practice...my attention span is very short. One of the most helpful videos I've seen, 🤘
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Uncle Ben! Your the best teacher on UA-cam by far!
The number of times I say "OH!!!?!" in your videos is almost uncountable... keep it up dude! Love your stuff!
Ben i have been watching alot of your wankshop's i swear by the all mighty pocket octave concept!!
Is it a guitar channel or a classic quotes workshop?
The "Fifth fret scale" and "the stupid B string" were very good xD
It’s so funny because all guitarists know what he’s talking about haha. This guy is hilarious
''Win Win Scenario'' Great lesson Ben Eller! You know how to teach.
Your lessons are excellent. Thanks Ben
Dude. I am so glad I found you on UG. Seriously bud, your scale explanation stuff is eye-opening.
Ben Eller is the man
Thanks Uncle Ben.
9-11 9-11 9-11
Never forget
Daniel Nodland legalize ranch
I feel like he chose C# just so that he could make this joke
you forgot "Bush did"
7-11 was a part time job.
its proof of the truth.
That finish is super duper.

I wish I learned this when I was 14; now I’m 47. Awesome lesson.
Same here, man. All I had was the guitar of my sister and a book with the chord shapes.
The worst part though: until youtube came up I really thought I was a decent player.
Damn, was I wrong.
Great lesson , you’ve answered a question I never knew how to ask ….thanks
Love your lessons, Ben! Entertaining, informative and just the right amount of talking / teaching vs. playing. Keep up the great work!
Danx for da lesson Uncle Ben.
Franklin
You are one great teacher! Easy to understand lessons and excellent delivery. Is there somewhere to get tab on these?

Thanks Ben. Super helpful.
nice G&L, and nice 'splainin' the lick.
All the years I wasted before I found your vids Uncle Ben. Starting over with guitar now
so i actually inadvertently figured out how to do that the right way. lol ..saw what everybody else was doing and decided not to do that but to do my own thing....so would start patterns all over the place and eventually connected it all together.i would also just reverse everything i played as well..if i descended i would then ascend the same..etc etc..did the same with bar chords and what i call octave chords..would switch them and then find what worked..then started putting them together in odd sequences and what not..and then i discovered poly rhythms and have been guitarded ever since...but listen to uncle Ben kids..dont do the self taught years of trial and error like i did..nope..just stick around and uncle Ben will hook you up..and remember your never done learning....ever...why i am here and checking out all the videos, looking for little things here and there to add to the tool box..even though i have played for 40 years or so..guitar is like an endless highway..with new stops along the way..thanks Ben....always take something away from your content...much respect.

POWERFUL UNCLE BEN!
How scorching was that lick? Well, the guitar USED to have a paintjob...
LMFAO
Nice! Good stuff as usual.
Nice lesson, uncle Ben 👍
Thank you UB for this ☝
Awesome lesson, thank you bro
Step Dad Speed Players Salute you...
You are excellent at showing how to unpeel the onion known as the fretboard.🕵 Really great stuff. Thanks.
Killer! Love the 80s graphics dude! Best days!
Cheers Uncle these are really good lessons.
Uncle Ben!! I watch you all the time! I still suck, but I'm getting better thanks to you!! :)
You have a very good way of explaining this stuff-the kind of stuff that always intimidated me as a kid, and continues to as an adult. I'm loving that plank your playing!

Always inspiring and one of the best guitar lessons ever,
Love u uncle ben💓

nice lesson well explained didn't need it but awesome.
Learning the root notes is the key.🎸🎸
Great advise at the start to get off the low strings. The top 3-4 strings are played far more for solos anyway so why also start low.
GREAT lesson! Thank you!
Whoa, mind is blown. Not at first by this lesson, but by the link to Troy Grady. I finally got to the meat of his series (episode 9) and now know what you mean about pick slanting. Im allways gonna call my b string stupid from now on. Great teacher. Subscribed.
When I listen to you and then I listen to me...I cry. Thank you.
Great lessons dude
Thinking outside ofthe box, that's great!
Anyone else think he chose C#minor because it let him say 9/11 so much? And WeekendWankShop?!? I'm dying! This guy is hilarious and I learnt a ton of new shit too. Subscribed!

Hey Ben, can we get a guitar collection video?
That is indeed a scorching lick!
