I know what you mean playing the main character yourself. It is just so much easier to direct yourself and it also makes it easier to bring other actors into the scene when the set is relaxed, comfortable, a place where the character can truly explore his environment without feeling the glow of spying eyes.
Making a film for this semester. The chaos is eating at me. The only feeling I get in preproduction is stress and on set I cool down, despite the shitty camera and lack of time for lighting, and all I do in post is have a laughter at what we've captured. It's insane. I don't think I can do it, but I know how to do it, and in the end I like it, but the toll is taxing.
I feel like I'm watching 1973.
