  • In this video I am beginning the rebuild of an original CJ2A model 41 rear axle assembly. I will try to show you some things the previous owner did that were incorrect and how to fix them. Also a few tip along the way to make your rebuild go smoothly.

    I would correct one statement you made early in the video. As you were showing the blue RTV you said, "someone did not work up to his abilities.' I think the person was working to his abilities, the use of silicone when it was the incorrect product shows the level the person was capable of. He would have probably used duct tape instead but with all that oil it wouldn't stick. I was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force back in the late 1960's and way too many guys I worked with had no clue what they were doing when it came to remove and replace. The mistakes you found tell me it was probably a case of, "hold my beer, I can fix this things easy." Great video love watching those that know what they are doing at work.

      Last guy in this axle made a complete mess of things and the blue rtv is always an indication of a rushed job or an incorrect job. Been here way too many times, but this will come together correctly and be a good axle when I am done.

    Wow - this poor guy hit every branch on his way down the goof up tree. Thank you sir for sharing all your know-how. Just got my first 3a in original condition. Very excited to start working on it and don’t want my newbie maintenance efforts to become exhibit A on a channel like yours.

    Hello, my caps for carrier have an upside-down D on left matching the upside-down D marked on housing... on right, it has a normal D marked on cap and housing. Is that how this one is marked? Have you seen this before? Sorry for the trouble and any help would be much appreciated:) I've learned alot from you

    so.... this may be a dumb question.... but if someone puts those caps on wrong.... can you re machine them so they work correctly?
    does my question make sense?
    Can it be fixed? or is the rear end complete junk.?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  3 місяці тому

      The caps are critical. Precision Line bored when new so if the caps are missing the axle would be junk unless you can re machine it, which would be difficult but not impossible. Best to get an axle with the correct caps in the correct location

    Does the Dana 41 OR 44 dictate whether you'll have swedge hubs or not ? Is the swedge hub standard to one model and not the other ? Or is this a year/model thing ?

    Brian... It seems the axle does not have the graded bolts they should have from the factory.. Maybe is me. Please comment. Thanks, Juan

      All the bolts and parts are junk on this rear axle. Somebody went in and made a mess of things. when I put it back together I will go over proper bolts and things like that.

    Another "I gotta a guy!" sad story. Been there done that. Looking forward to seeing the locker install on the Dana 41. My Dad has 6- '48 to '56 Willys in the garage with one about 80% restored. I'm on him every weekend to get the 1st one done. Learning a lot here and in the garage.

    The Dana 41 does not have a vent. Would installing a vent similar to the Dana 44 be wise or does this axle not need one?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  3 роки тому +1

      the dana 41 has a tiny hole in the tube of the assembly to allow venting. Make sure it is clear. If you want to add a vent to the cover you can do that as well, but not needed if your tube hole is clear and working
