    Hi Mike, great presentation thanks again. I was just at the store looking at the Beauty Harmony Lux Plush Medium and Beautyrest PressureSmart Lux Med. Can you explain to me the difference. Your online quiz recommended the PressureSmart. Thanks, Joe

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Joe -- Thanks for your question, and your kind words. The main difference with these two lines is that the PressureSmart mattresses have memory foam right up in the quilt of the mattress. This means it's closer to your body and thereby able to deliver more pressure-relieving benefit, something that is particularly valuable for side sleepers. FYI, in case you haven't seen it, we have a page (and a video) with more details about the PressureSmart line here:

    I live in Kamloops BC. There is not a lot of options for purchasing a good mattress. Sleep Country seems to be one of the only ones.
    I interested in what they call their Beauty Rest Unity Lux Reef. I'm scared of pillow tops as they seems to breakdown faster. Can you give your opinion of the mattress mentioned about for side/back combo sleeping and for a couple.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Diane. We're based in the US, so we haven't seen that mattress or tested it. Just looking at that model online, it does look very similar to the Harmony Lux models we've reviewed here. So you might look at our comments on the pillowtop Harmony Lux mattresses here. I see that the Unity Lux also includes the sustainable fabric in the cover, and some cooling features.
      As for pillowtops generally, depending on their softness, the top materials might compress somewhat faster, but that really depends on so many factors -- the initial quality, the type and size of sleeper you are, whether you spend a lot of time in bed other than sleeping (watching TV for example).

  • @kjnightbird121
    @kjnightbird121 2 роки тому +1

    Hi Mike,
    I've ordered a Beautyrest Lux in the Carbon Series, in an Extra Firm Twin. (Waiting for it to arrive.) The only thing that may be problematic, will be the "cooling" features.
    Do you have any recommendations to reduce or nullify the cooling effects? Everything else is exactly what I want.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +1

      Hi KJ -- Thanks for your question. My recommendation here would be to wait and see how you experience the mattress. The cooling features are designed to promote temperature neutrality, so if you tend to already be neutral in your temperature, their impact should be reduced. As an analogy, think of how it feels to enter a 70-degree air-conditioned building from a hot humid summer day -- you are very hot when you enter, so that building feels very cold. But if you enter that same indoor climate from a 70-degree fall day, it won't feel cold to you.
      That being said, if the mattress arrives and you do find yourself uncomfortably cold when you sleep on it, I would recommend the following:
      1) The easiest way for warmth to escape your body is through the air, so having more and/or warmer blankets will create more insulation and help keep that body heat closer to your body.
      2) A thicker mattress pad won't eliminate the temperature-regulating features, however it will increase the time that it takes for the heat from your body to reach those cooling features, which in effect reduces the initial "coolness to the touch." So if you are only experiencing excess coolness when you first get into bed, this could be the best solution.
      3) There are solutions that will actually heat the surface of your bed, typically through a pad with either electrical heat or tiny tubes of heated water. That said, this level of heat would go well beyond what is needed to simply counter-balance the cooling features of the mattress. So I would only recommend this option if you prefer to feel warm and cozy when you are in bed, or if you have a tendency to get cold during the night on most or all mattresses.
      I hope that's helpful.

    I'm a side sleeper. I love the luxury feel of a pillow top mattress, but I know they do go very soft over the years. I like a medium-soft feel. I'm torn between the Harmony Lux Diamond Plush and the Harmony Lux Diamond Medium Firm Pillowtop (rather than getting the Plush Pillowtop). Which one can you recommend for my needs? Unfortunately, I can't find a store that has these models on display. Thanks in advance!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  3 роки тому +5

      Hi and thanks for the question. Another option is getting a non pillow-top mattress, then adding a separate mattress topper. That way you're getting that feel and cushioning you like, but you can replace it easily in a couple of years and extend the life of your mattress.
      Hope that's helpful!

    • @pacificH2O

      @@goodbed Personally, I hate toppers. They never give you the same feel as a one piece mattress.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +3

      @@pacificH2O That is 100% true. That suggestion was only made in the context of optimizing around the longevity concerns that the OP had expressed. Since a topper will bear the brunt of the wear (especially with a firmer mattress), and can be replaced much more cost-effectively, it can be a sensible option for this purpose. This approach can yield a similar level of softness and cushioning depth, but as you point out, a detached topper certainly does feel a bit different than a one-piece mattress. I hope that's helpful.

    How’s pillow top mattress longevity and life span? Do they last just as long as the tight top ones if maintained properly? We’re looking at carbon series medium firm pillow top 15.75” and carbon series medium firm 13.75”. We are side sleepers and while we like a bit of that luxury feel we still want somewhat firm mattress underneath. Which would you recommend? Thank you!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Christina and thanks for the question. A pillow top mattress appeals to those who want a firmer bed, but also like some cushioning and softness up top. Speaking very broadly, and depending on materials and softness, pillowtops can develop body impressions more quickly because they tend to be softer in the first place. However, the underlying mattress should still provide support even if that happens.
      One alternative to consider is going with a standard tight-top mattress, then adding a mattress topper. That will give you the softness and cushioning you want up top, and also allow you to replace it inexpensively down the road.
      Hope that's helpful!

    Love your videos. I need some help deciding a good long lasting BeautyRest mattress. I am smaller than 150lbs and short. I had a Beautyrest BRS900C and hated it after 2 years of purchase because it sank too quickly causing me to wake up every night and experience stomach pain (due to the dip in the middle of the bed). I dont get why the mattress sank so fast and it was not cheap. BR will replace my mattress with the Harmony Lux or Harmony Lux hybrid. I love plush mattresses but Im scared that plush would sink faster than a medium, so I am not sure if should opt in for a medium or a medium harmony lux hybrid. I simply want something that DOES NOT RAPIDLY SINK ! Its ashame how mattresses nowadays arent built like they used too.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  Рік тому

      Hey there! Very sorry to hear that. Generally speaking, I'd expect the Lux and Lux Hybrid models to perform similarly, as these use many of the same materials. That said, you might have better luck with the medium option as you suspect. Most foams tend to soften over the first six months to a year of use, and this can sometimes mean that super plush or pillowtop options soften too much for some sleepers.

    • @goodbed

      Hi Alan. We have a video specifically on the Beautyrest Hybrid collection -- that's where you'll find the BRX3000 series: ua-cam.com/video/_Qz_OivOBPI/v-deo.html
      Beautyrest typically revises the materials in these and updates model names every couple of years, but the question of "better" really depends on your needs and what you're looking for in a mattress. In terms of construction quality, we would say it's comparable from the last generation to this one. Hope that's what you were looking for.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  Рік тому +1

      Hi Lisbeth. All of those mattresses are "exclusives" -- meaning they are made specifically for a certain retailer and not available elsewhere. And for that reason, we don't have information on those kinds of beds. You can compare them for yourself by asking about their materials, comparing coil count, and checking the warranty. Be sure to check return policies, and check on the mattress's allowable "dip" or "sink" before the warranty kicks in. For comparison, the industry average for spring mattresses is 1.5", meaning that's the depth of sag you would have to have before the warranty would kick in.

    Macy's has Harmony Cayman Series, are those a step below this? I can't find anything about them

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +2

      Hi. Macy's contracts with Beautyrest to offer "exclusive" mattresses -- that means they are only available at Macy's, and it's virtually impossible to find any info on them except from Macy's. It makes it really hard to tell where these models might compare to others in the Harmony lineup -- and that's really the whole point, that consumers can't easily compare apples to apples. Just based on price, the Cayman models are probably closer to the base Harmony Lux Carbon mattresses we discuss. But the materials are called different names, and it's impossible to know how similar or different they might be to the models we looked at.
      Sorry I can't be more helpful -- this is very common for stores to do this, so that shoppers cannot easily compare mattresses across stores.
      Thanks for leaving a comment/question.

      Hi. While we didn't do a full review on the Harmony Lux models, a plush should work for you. Back sleepers are typically the easiest to support since body weight is distributed across the bed more evenly compared to side and stomach sleeping. Mostly, "plush" is a matter of preference and whether you like a mattress that's soft and lets you sink in. Since this is a hybrid, the springs below should reach up into your lumbar area -- that's what to look for when you try it out.

    I have the Harmony Lux ultra Plush 17 inch mattress. I am returning it. For me, I sleep way to hot. Does not seem to be much cooling that I can tell. I can only sleep with a sheet, and I wake all night hot. I have had it for 2 mos. so I have definitely gotten used to it. Another thing, although it is initially soft and most of the time just fine, sometimes I wake up feeling like I sunk all the way onto the coils. Other times it is fine. I also wake with low back pain a few days a week. If you are young, and do not sleep hot, you will like this bed. For me, 5 foot 3, 140 lbs and 55 yrs old, I do not like it. Honestly, buy the beds in a box with the full return guarantee. You cannot lose if you do not like the mattress because you can return and get another one or another brand. For me, with City Furniture, it is just a big rip off if you do not like the mattress.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  4 роки тому +5

      Hi Angela. Thanks for the comment. Body impressions are a worry for just about everyone -- you aren't alone. In our experience, it's the top layers of padding and foam that are more likely to compress -- but a hybrid mattress like the Beautyrest has springs that are going to prevent too much sinking.
      We do find that softer mattress are more prone to them, and pillow-tops too, where you have lots of foam/padding right up top. So my concern would not be for this brand in particular -- more for the type of mattress. Some compression of the top materials in the first couple of years would be considered normal -- that's not a defect per se, and doesn't necessarily indicate that the materials are somehow flawed -- it's just kind of the nature of the beast when you have a very soft pillow-top mattress.
      I hope that's helpful!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Christen -- Thanks for your question. Overall, the edge support on this collection is good, but not the best. A couple other generalities about the edge support for this collection:
      1) it is generally much better when lying down on the edge vs when sitting on the edge
      2) as with many collections, it tends to be better with the firmer models than with the softer ones
      Overall, we rated the edge support on these models to be between pretty good and good when sitting on the edge, but between good and very good when lying on the edge.

      @@mauri7334 Within this line-up, the materials used are pretty consistent, so I would not expect durability to differ too dramatically. That said, if this is a big consideration for you, I would offer the following guidance:
      * In general, the most vulnerable part of a mattress is its top comfort layers. Having less puffy foam up at the top of the mattress removes a bit of comfort and softness, but also makes it less likely that deep body impressions will appear over time.
      * Beautyrest uses two slightly different support units for firmer models vs softer models. Anecdotally, I hear fewer durability complaints related to models with the firmer support unit. Be aware that medium models may vary in terms of which support unit they use, so you can try asking the salesperson which support unit is in which model.
      * Certainly the quality level of the materials (and thus their expected longevity) increases a bit as you step up from Carbon to Diamond

      I find that it sleeps very cool. It just goes to show how subjective mattress reviews are. Everyone has a different experience. Such is life!

    Kind of confused, did you mean the entire mattress has coils, or just the center has coils?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there -- Thanks for your question. No, the coil unit extends across the entire mattress, with the exception of the firm foam rail that runs around the perimeter for edge support. What's unique about the center 1/3 is that every other row in that center 1/3 is the firmer "T2" coils (as explained at 6:05 in the video). For more info about the T2 coils, see the 4:15 mark in the video. I hope that's helpful.

      @@goodbed Very helpful, thank you. I recently got a BR HD Diamond but didn't get a new box spring. I thought my old box was sufficient. It is an older restonic split queen box foundation. I also have a six leg metal frame with a center support beam. I noticed some of the boards in the box are 5 inches apart. Should've I upgraded the box also? Im concerned about the warranty. Thank you for your time.

    • @goodbed

      @@ImDaBadGuy 5 inches apart is more spacing than is recommended for most mattresses today, so I actually would recommend upgrading your foundation as well. Typically we recommend that a slatted base have no more than 3" spacing. At the bottom of the mattress, there is generally an inch of base foam that the coils rest on, but foam is not strong enough to hold the coils together with nothing underneath. So with 5" of space in between the slats, there is too much opportunity for the mattress to squeeze in between those slats, which could very likely affect the support and longevity of the mattress, and could indeed lead issues with a warranty claim in that instance as well. In the interim, an alternative that would also totally work would be to simply put a piece of plywood in between your mattress and the foundation. I hope that's helpful.

    • @ImDaBadGuy
      @ImDaBadGuy 2 роки тому

      @@goodbed Very helpful indeed. I appreciate the input. Sounds like the plywood would be just as solid as a new foundation and would also cover the warranty specs. The salesperson did not even try to sell me on a new "box spring", now I wish she had. I thought since I have a split queen foundation it had plenty of center support but didn't take into account how these new beds are built. Also noticed after the mattress was delivered one of the labels was removed already. There are still two labels. The law label is there. Another label with manufacture date and approved foundation types. There is one label that was cut off though so Im making absolutely sure Im within my warranty rights here, if needed. Edit: The law label also states the warranty code and the model so I'm stumped at what label was cut off. Thanks again for your time!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 роки тому

      @@ImDaBadGuy Hmm, I'm not sure what label would have been cut off either (or why) but if you don't have one that shows what materials in the mattress, then that could be the one. As for how that impacts the warranty, I could speculate but to be safe I would recommend contacting the manufacturer before your return policy ends to explain what you received and clarify in writing what they would require in terms of the tags in the event of a warranty claim. I hope that's helpful.

      The mattress line is very interesting how it is doing zoned support using t2 and pocketed coils. Phase change material on top with right temp foam is a game changer. I wouldn’t be interested in the firm/extra firm as I am a side sleeper, but I would be more interested in a medium soft or maybe the Diamond series with the gel memory foam.

      @goodbed  4 роки тому +1

      Hi LJ. In our experience, 'sleeping hot' doesn't have a lot to do with body weight. It's something you experience or you don't. Generally, if it's a concern for you, we think you'll do better with a mattress that doesn't have super deep cushioning -- that's so more of your body is exposed to the air. And you'll want to choose a hybrid mattress -- the BR Harmony Lux series are hybrids. That's because a mattress with a spring support core will give you a lot more air circulation than one that's all foam.
      Something that's not so great for hot sleepers is the foam edge support such as the one used on the Harmony Lux line -- in our opinion, the foam can inhibit the natural air flow around the springs.
      We have an article specifically for those concerned about sleeping hot -- what to look for, and what not to look for : www.goodbed.com/mattress-features/do-mattresses-sleep-hot/
      Hope that's helpful!

    Gave up after a minute and a half. I came here to find a good mattress not to listen to an environmental speech. On to someone else who does not have a political agenda.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  3 роки тому +10

      Hi and thanks for the comment. We definitely don't have an agenda -- we are not recommending or not recommending the Harmony Lux. Rather, our goal is to address all of the aspects important to shoppers -- and of course, not all aspects will be of importance to every shopper. For example, our reviews also spend a good bit of time talking about a mattress's performance on an adjustable base -- but that's also not something every shopper will be interested in. Readers have told us that sustainability is increasingly important to them, so we want to be sure to cover that.
      Additionally, you can use our chapter headings to skip around and skip over sections of the video that don't interest you.
      Lastly, note that almost all other mattress reviews are either owned by a mattress company or are connected to maximizing affiliate sales by only reviewing mattresses that earn a commission for them. GoodBed is independently owned, and we cover mattresses from all brands -- not just the ones that pay reviewers commissions.
      Best of luck in your mattress search.

      What a great response to this comment Good Bed! I bought this mattress for the looks, feel and mostly I was drawn in by the demonstration of the sustainability and ocean cleaning efforts at my local mattress store. Ocean clean up is important to me and I was willing to spend outside of my budget to support those efforts. So far I’m very happy with my harmony luxe diamond plush pillow top mattress. We will see how it holds up in the months and years to come!

      @@uwack23 I love the mattress. I’ve had it for a year and 3 months now. It is very comfortable and very cool at night. I rotate the mattress every 3 or 4 months and I haven’t noticed any body impressions. I have a mattress protector over it and it still looks brand new. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I feel confident it will last me for years to come. I would recommend this mattress for side and back sleepers. Not so much if you’re a stomach sleeper as it is very plush. I am a side/back combo sleeper and I get an excellent quality sleep.
