Most of the basic fundementals of snowboarding are showing off. In order to be recreational you must be able to do multiple turns in a row and (for advanced recreational) a 360. Skiing (I find) is more about sleekness and speed rather than tricks

Yeah, in my experience the first couple days were basically a pain in the butt (literally), then I started getting better at balance and some turning techniques. A couple days of this and I got introduced into carving, and control substantially increased. Then with carving comes speed and stability. Finally I considered myself good enough to go to the big hill from the bunny hill. At that point I started learning switch (the sooner you start switch the better, the best time is after learning to do pretty well at carving, as switch will feel like you're completely beginning again and can be pretty discouraging, but switch is super vital to so many techniques later on). After my switch got good enough to appear like it's my natural way of snowboarding I practiced jumps and 180s, after getting good at 180s, I saw a couple videos of Ryan Knapton and his smooth snowboarding and that highly motivated me to be as smooth as he is, at that point I started to practice those 180-butter-turns that he does while moving, and so far I can do that frontside pretty well. This was 1 season of snowboarding, and I really pushed myself to increase my skill as fast as I could, progress slowed down near the end of the season, but hopefully this season I can make just as much progress again! So if you're willing to learn and dedicate yourself to it, progression can come really fast. And don't look at flips and tricks far ahead of your skill level, just one level at a time, and you'll get there before you know it.
