Ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. You learn real quick in backpacking what matters and what doesn’t, especially in the mountains

Just stumbled on this video. Great timing. One of my 2022 ham goals is to lighten my pack for SOTA as well. About 4 years ago, I started out with just that CS-60 case for my KX-2 and had everything I needed to get on air in it as well. I’m CW only, so I don’t have to worry about a mic (space wise).
I haven’t weighed my setup now, but it’s got to be 15 lbs. Plus I carry a CHA mPas v1 with the Mil Whip + Extension. My last peak nearly killed me with all the weight.
I make these little bags too, but out of Cordura, this waterproof ripstop idea is brilliant. And I have Gems Products SideKX panels and cover too. Plus I always have an extra pair of socks and shirt or something I can wrap around it.
I can’t go without a portable mast though, my Carbon6 is pretty light and can help get a wire up on a rocky top.
The throw bag idea is wonderful. I’ve been using golf balls which take up space.
    Thanks for posting.

Thank you for the comment! Yea you can save a lot of weight just replacing the CHA MPas, it's built nice but pretty heavy.

Great setup Chuck! Not sure if it would work but Icom makes a super light single pin mic, the HM-70. I haven’t weighed it yet but I’d say no more than 3oz max. That equates to 84g. I found one at the hamfest this past weekend hoping to try it as an upgrade to my TJ5A. That headset idea is a prime choice as well, 73 my friend!

6:33 in , he’s gonna take off the mic hook. Right?

Nope. I am 235lbs, I ride a bike. I could spend $1500 for a carbon frame to replace my steel frame to shave 5 lbs or I could drop down to 230 lbs. So yeah, weight weenies aren’t my thing.

Your scale has to be off. 1385 grams is 3.05lbs. 866 grams is 1.9lbs. Grams divided by 456.6.
