This is what it's all about...hardcore GMRS and hardcore Amateur Radio having fun together. We are ALL communicators, regardless of the location, means, or method. Nice to see it all coming together. Great job Josh and Randy!
Thanks for a fun collaboration. GMRS was my gateway into amateur radio, and I still use it frequently with my family while kayaking, road trips, camping, and so on. Thanks for doing the stuff and the things.
Great Video guys - I watched both sides. Love Randy's Jeep - I also have a "not a rubicon" Jeep. I'm working on my general license and plan to get out for some POTA and SOTA this summer. 73
I just ideated "Telescoping Mud Guards", where the plastic fenders mount on a sliding track with an actuator or manually operated with click stops... Then, based on conditions, the fenders/mud guards can extend out horizontally to cover more of the wheel...
That was a nasty crash! I learnt some great 4x4 tips from randy. Cool air tank idea. If Randy gets his HAM licence, you need to buy a Rubicon Jeep!... a real one, not a toy. Lol 🚙👌😁
Hello Josh. I have a thought about this video. @6:50 if you took a screen shot of you operating SOTA & POTA the image would make for a perfect QSL card picture or a promo for both venues. Very cool. 73 Martin - WD9ABG
Crazy. I drove past that accident just as the road opened headed into Big Bear. Stayed there Sun and Monday. Small word. Didn’t hear anyone on 146.520 from Castle Rock.
lol a nest of radio ops in the field. I came across a few while working for parks in the catskills one year. was fun! even got a qsl card on my window when i got back down.
The collaboration you and Randy have going is pure gold.. I’m a happy ham that misses the days of off roading when I went to college in Arizona Back in the mid 90s. Can’t wait to see your next ham radio / 4x4 adventure…. 73…. KC2KNA..
That uv5r is something else it took me a couple weeks, to learn how to manually program it from the keypad. I keep telling myself to get a chirp and a cord but I been procrastinating😂 but I'm comfortable enough to run it from the pad.
Xenu has brought PEACE to the two Worlds and assigned you and Randy as our fearless leaders! What a great video, Josh - yup I am gonna get my ham license now. You available for private 1 on 1 zoom classes?
Just wanted to say, cool video you and Randy (Notarubicon) made. It's was great to see the chemistry of both of you promoting your interests in your respective hobbies and make it fun. That Gold Mtn/Holcomb Valley area is beautiful country considering it is surrounded by nearly 20 million people. I happen to be just a few miles from y'all on Sunday afternoon in my truck doing the 3N16 run from Van Dusen Canyon to Green Valley Lake. Perfect day for some 4 wheel'in. The John Bull trail you were on is a bit intimating for my F150 4x4. I can't believe someone was crazy enough to attempt that between those rocks. Look forward to future collaborations with you 4 wheeling and playing radio. 73's and 69's
Jeeps are addictive. Even if you are not into overlanding, they are great vehicles for horrendous weather and are fuel efficient. I wish I would've went with Jeep with my last two vehicles.
Fuel efficient?! Mine gets 16Mpg IF i'm lucky, going downhill with the wind at my back! On the trail in 4LO, it gets about 10Mpg... BUT - its still worth it!
The only bummer about these videos is that I went full force into GMRS, and now I want to get into HAM. Which means I’m going to spend more money I don’t have. 😥
Great video! I watch both of you guys and just upgraded to General, so the POTA snd SOTA activation was very cool to see. I plan to do the same thing here in NW Colorado as we get up on the peaks often to camp and off-road. Looking forward to learning more.
@@EhWassAmattaU Did you also take into account the rotational velocity during the roll-over or just the linear speed? (Sorry, I'm a nerd and couldn't help myself)
After being a joined subscriber of Notarubicon for a minute, I’m convinced Randy is a fellow Texan at heart. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn he’s from Texas.
What radio and antenna where you useing I've been looking for a 100w all band all mode mobile and have not had any luck yet do you have any suggestions thanks
so what radio was being used for the activation? Was that the Yaesu 891? Would love to get that but I really want something that will do HF, 2m, 70cm. This will be my primary rig for my shack as well as my truck.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thanks for the reply! This is exactly what I am looking for. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it is going to be an easy task to acquire one. The FT897 is very similar and it is an unobtainium as well. Great video! Learning a lot from your channel as a new Ham.
I feel like I'm in the twilight zone.... I had to come over here to Josh's channel to see some very excellent Notarubicon jeeping scenes. Nice work Josh! 11:30 By the way, Randy, is that the Motorola XTL-5000 hundred Watt radio on the dash? Very nice indeed.
I heard more traffic on GMRS in just this video than I have heard on my local 2 meter repeater in the past month! Just sayin' .....love the combination of Jeeping and radio......maybe a new contest rules for new category? Plus my two favorite You Tube nerds!
I haven’t told Randy yet but I made a wize crack on a ham tubers video recently and he told me I must be a sad ham😂I love it! The community is growing.
Please tell me as a new HAM that I will at some time be able to understand call signs. My mind has serious problems processing the phonetic alphabet. Slow I can get it about 95% of the time. At Josh speed maybe two letters. Fun video ...

sad thing is this is pretty much true today. rubicon has pretty much been paved after they went in and blew up the big boulders and people filling in holes or creating bypasses. i know when they used to do the jeep weekend 4x groups would have to go up the following week and clear out the rocks
Two of my favorite radio people in one video makes it a good day. Thanks to both, and do it again and show us the adventures :) Ken, KA8VLW (but not "some people" or a sad ham!)
Hi Josh, I have been binge watching NotARubicon and have now crossed over to watch some of yours. I have a few questions. Take this from the perspective of a person that is new to seeing this. 1 - what is the point of HAM? You talk alot of lingo when making contact but whats the point of the conversation? I dont get it…is it just to get the handle and location of the other person?…why? 2 - Can you maybe make a video breaking down - explaining what the terms mean when when you are communicating? 3 - Does all you communications when making contact follow the same pattern?
Hello Randy I really enjoy watching your videos I drove truck back in the 70s,80s I used a cb radio,I am 71 years old i have a wrangler looking for a simple beginner radio and where can I order a Nottarubican decal to put on my jeep
There are still some HMMWVs available for cheap on GovPlanet and equipped with antennas for ALE, but California won’t allow any more to be registered for road use. You have to register them in a freedom-loving state instead.
what is a freedom loving state? and all my california friends love freedom. doesnt tx still require vehicle inspections? and you clearly never lived in california when you couldnt see the mountains from anywhere in la.
Thanks for coming out with me Josh! It was fun and I actually learned a few things from watching you play radio!
