I used to live in Japan close to Yokosuka, and Dobuita street is a real street. I hung around there often. many of the shops were modeled after real places. the flower shop, the bar, jacket shop and burger place are still there and look similar to what they do in the game. the docks looks very similar too. and Yokosuka is a navy base, so the town is more than 50% foreign sailors. i wish i watched you stream this. game and location is super nostalgic for me.
Super late to the game here: it seems the "especially since you bought merchandise" line is a mistranslation from the original Japanese. The phrase contains a somewhat untranslatable word "sekkaku" which describes something for which an effort was made with unfortunate consequences. So she is saying. "its too bad, especially seeing as you bought something".
It's a little weird nobody translating or recording that line thought it sounded weird or out of place. Maybe they just didn't know the context at the time?
@@Blakbox92 afaik, Yu Suzuki (Shenmue's director and creator,) translated all the dialogue himself, as was very common back in the day with games and anime. Japanese creative minds INSISTED on having their hands all over the translated product, even though about 95% of the time it turned out super hammy and all that. that's why so much translated Japanese media is... like that.
Watching this series with the the head-cannon that Ryu is known as and recognized as being the biggest, dumbest, idiot in the whole town makes it so much funnier
Listening to the voice acting, I'm 90% certain that most of the lines during exploration were recorded one line at a time, taken individually from a spreadsheet without context to other lines that may play immediately before or after. This is likely how the translation was handled too. For cutscenes, the text may have been grouped together, making for better line reads, but it sure sounds like each line was recorded separately for things that happen in the course of normal gameplay.
Congrats on the 400+ subscribers! YAY Bob came back! I was afraid we wouldn't see her again :( Gotta admit, you're pretty lucky at gambling most of the time. I'm really enjoying watching you play this game! Its so engaging :)
Why do I love watching this game? I dont understand why but it is captivating. Ian: Thanks for giving it a try! I'm glad you are enjoying it as well :D
I’ve been watching and wracking my brain trying to remember what those “thug high school girls” are called and finally remembered they were called “Yankees”. I needed to share this weight off my brain 😌
I've been Goth most if not all of my life, so if I may, I'd like to explain. Goth is more than just wearing black/dark clothing, wearing dark bold make up, liking skulls and/or liking certain types of music. Goth also has to do with a similar shared outlook on life/a way of thought, and an interest in things other might find morbid or un enjoyable or saddening. If you are drawn to night time, like grave yards, like skulls, have interest in vampires/witchcraft/the paranormal/mythology/demons (ect), and take time to think deeply about death/morbid topics in detail to come up with deep conclusions, then you might be goth. For example, the Grim Reaper shouldn't be feared, he should be thanked. With out death, the over population of Earth would worsen. With so many people, food would run out so people would starve, there wouldn't be enough water, theres no way everyone could have a job position which would make having enough money for pleasure let alone necessities near impossible, there wouldn't be enough space on earth to house all those people which would mean cutting down more land to make room for more buildings. With more building = less space for animals and possibly some species extinctions. Less land also means less farms which= even less food to go around. Humanity can only take so much. There will likely be mass riots, murder, stealing and suicide. Although it sucks when people we know die, and its very sad, it is best to be thankful for death or it could be a lot worse here on Earth for the rest of the living population. If you like reading Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. lovecraft, Anne Rice, and/or Oscar Wilde you may be goth. If you ever wanted to have coffin furniture, you may be goth. If you have spider, skull or bat jewelry you may be goth. If you have ever wanted a crow, raven, bat or black cat as a pet, you may be goth. Many goths tend to be interested in art, poetry, and music In closing, a goth sees beauty in the dark side of life which many other people ignore. A group of crows in a tree might be scary or though of bad luck to some but a goth with gaze at them and see beauty. Myself, I'd probably bring out a sketch book and start drawing them. Goths embrace both the good and bad, the lightness and darkness in life because its both important parts of life. A clear sunny day can be beautiful but so is a stormy grey cloudy day and of course a stary night sky. A beautiful rose is not without its thorns. Most of use believe that it is abnormal to be happy 24/7 and there is no reason to fake it, so we express how we feel regardless of the opinions of others. Thats why many goths are thought of to be sad, depressing, gloomly, people. We don't hide our sadness/mourning. but that is just a stereotype, theres plenty of happy gothic people too. Within the subculture, your also likely to come across posers who try to hard and people who feel elite for being more gothic than someone else or for being a goth longer than someone else. I'm not always the best at being tolerant of either type honestly. Gothic clothing isn't very cheap so making others feel bad for not being able to afford as nice clothing doesn't make someone an elite goth, it makes them a bully and I stand up for those being bullied. I also have a tendency for taking in baby goths/baby bats (younger people that are new to goth or have an interest in goth) and teaching them the gothic ways and supporting them which hurts my rep even more. Many of these newer goths aren't taken serious by people who have been goth for longer, can be treated very badly and are often considered to be posers. While many baby bats don't stay a goth, and it may only be a phase that lasts for a few moths to a few years. Teens sometimes just like trying out new things or may do it for rebel purposes. However, its still important that they have emotional support, someone to help along the way, and someone to help them stay out of trouble. Back in high school, I had a group of baby bats that I looked out for almost the whole time I was in high school. Even in middle school I had a few people who looked up to me. Most of those people aren't goth today, but taught them a few things, I helped keep bullies from beating them badly by doing a lot of their fighting for them (the detentions were worth it), and I enjoyed their friendship. Anyways, my choices don''t make me very popular in the subculture around here though. Many people (including other older goths who have been goths for longer) would rather make new goths cry, feel very unwelcomed and question their choices in hopes that they will go away/stop being a nuisance to them. But then again, popular is over rated so I don't mind being unpopular. If I came across anyone picking on a baby bat today, I'd jump into action, and take them under my wing. I hope this has been insightful to at least someone.
In order to be Goth you have to hate everything for no reason, even though your life is ok and your parents love you. Anyone whose life is really that bad doesnt have the money or time for the get up. Goth's are the new hippies, just spoiled kids who think they're entitled for some reason and then whine about, only goths whine harder. Then I guess theres also Goth's who just like the look and style but arent assholes. I hope you're not the former. TLDR btw.
Jackson, I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Emos. Emos are generally the ones who are upset and complain. Goths don't hate life. We see beauty in the darkness of life. We see beauty in things normal people do not. While goth and emo are similar in some ways, I promise they are different than goths. I'd explain more, but I doubt you would care enough to read my explanation. Also, I don't care that you didn't read all my comment. The topic clearly doesn't interest you enough, so my comment really wasn't for you.
It's kind of a case where you, forgive the pun, read the label on the box. Goths enjoy the darker, more somber side of life, and find comfort in the expression of things gothic and macabre. Emos... Well they generally tend to be emotional twats, who feel buggered cause the world and "society" won't pay attention to them not wanting attention. So yeah, two different things really. (Is it sad that South Park intrigued me enough to try studying these strange cultures with the vampire/Twilight episode?)

Have been watching these whilst playing through some games in my backlog and it's such a lovely atmosphere - thanks Ian and past chat :)
"Shenmue 2 is on the way."
Awesome! I hope my favourite character, Thirsty Guy, makes a comeback!!
I hope he can even play it
Didn't he say it was on Xbox? Seems to me like odds are much better that he could play that versus a game on the Dreamcast, no?
Maybe he's gonna take two sip this Time !
that would be awesome! XD

I've been singing the music from Tomato Convenience all day! Especially since you bought merchandise.
I'm entirely too amused by Ian's reluctant willingness to go to The Other Store -- but *only* because he wasn't sure Tomato had the thing he needed
"Must be sad to work in a Casino" idk why but that made me laugh a lot.

Idk why but 41:55 literally made me laugh out loud, like as though Ian wasn't the one who made him do that 🤣
I just watched the stream last night but I'm still gonna watch the VOD
I have absolutely no reason to, but I want to anyway!
