Thanks for posting this video. My father was involved with this project and is pictured at 13:35, sitting with the men in the bar talking (he isn't saying anything).. His name was Ron Harvey. I was 16 when my father moved us to Reno to work on the Learfan. At one point we moved to Antrim (N. Ireland( while he helped manage the production plant--1980-81, I believe. I met and married my first husband (by then I was 19), and we went to Wichita to work on the Starship. My father has since passed away, but I would have to say, this was the pinnacle of his career. Those were exciting days, and almost everyone I know said that if Bill Lear had lived, there would now be Learfans in production and flying. .

Produced by my late partner, Averil Ward, a very talented lady. I like to sing her praises when I can!

I'd have to agree. This was a well made production and covered a lot in a short time. I'd have watched more.
I was certain that I was listening to Elizabeth Montgomery, famous for her role on television but a narrator for many important documentaries. Wendy Sakakeeny sounds very much like Liz.

Just found this video. I worked there for 3 years in flight test instrumentation until they pad locked the doors for good. Lots of great and sad memories both.

I witnessed it's final certification flight as well as the Maiden Flight. Quite a machine.

I helped design this aircraft in Reno, Nevada. Moved to Reno with my family from Southern California. At the time I was laid off from the Space Shuttle Program in Downey, California. The final blow to this program was the gearbox certification that was built by Western Gear Corporation. The type of gear box had only been used in helicopters at the time. Lots of good memories and great people to work with. Looking at first flight photos and a large artist rendition signed by Moya Lear on my office wall. First flight pilots were Hank Beaird and Dennis Newton.

All these years later the 787/A350 are just beginning to have carbon fuselages

Bill Lear's death was unfortunate, it's a lot to ask of a former showgirl to know whom to trust when so much is riding on good decisions and not everyone who speaks with confidence has the knowledge or the research to back it up.
The Starship was shown often here and while some shipped, it wasn't a commercial success because they relied too heavily on Burt Rutan. All the world is a nail to a hammer and every aircraft is a canard to Burt. It was heavy and so, couldn't compete with the company's own King Air with regard to range nor capacity. Add the cost of "space age materials" and suddenly it's a bookkeeping decision as well.
The Piaggio Avanti took inspiration from both and I would argue that Starship was just a bigger version of Rutan's previous designs whereas Lear Fan and the Avanti both shared new thinking. The best walk-around video of the Avanti is hosted by a man who knows his aircraft and points out the similarities with the Lear Fan (especially noticeable in the wing but the pilot mentions the door as well) and not the Starship.

LOL...no he resigned (or actually pushed) from Lear Inc. who wanted no part of being a aircraft manufacturer to form Lear Jet. Part of his resignation (along with $10 million of stock he sold) was that he could retain the Lear name for the Jet. The eight track player came two or more years after the first flight of the Model 23 and made money but not all that much. Bill sold out to Gates Rubber in 1967 and it became Gates Learjet. All these years later it's still in Wichita at the same plant and owned by Bombardier.

Beautiful plane. So was the Beechcraft Starship. Neither one survived.
To truisms, never fight a land war in Asia, and never-ever build a plane or car (Delorean) in Northern Ireland with British government involvement.
