Am I the only one who thinks it would be completely in character for Bill Cipher to engage in selfcest? He’s definitely self important enough. Maybe the breakup with Ford gave him the whole, “If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself,” mentality-
the only problem i personally see here is bill's deeply buried self hatred* *idk if im just seeing things but something about the way that he talks screams self-hate to me. im probably projecting at least a little bit, but to me, something about him vibes "i hate you more than anyone else, youre the reason everything is awful (is talking to a mirror)"
they absolutely are. i always kept to the main fandom and now that ive gotten curious and have started looking into the AUs, i realize i know absolutely nothing. i started watching underverse a while ago and had no fucking clue what was going on at any given point. i respect the dedication, but its so far removed from what undertale is. you get to a certain point and they arent even alternate universes anymore.
It’s really funny to see a selfcest tag on a fic cause then I causes you to remember how it’s literally just alternate versions of sans or re-imagines of him and then you kinda get stuck with that thought for a bit
As an Undertale Alternative Universe connoisseur, it’s always funny to see people from the outside of the fandom looking in. After so many years here you start to forget you are essentially shipping the same guy with himself over and over again.
I didn't even know that the sanscest stuff added up to ALL of the sans AU's the fandom 😭 the fandom genuinely made me think it was just the incest between sans and papyrus from any AU 💀 i just learned what it meant a few weeks ago
At this point "Sans" feels like a species like Elves, or Pokemon. Especially pokemon. Throw a Moon stone at one, throw a water stone to another and get different results. Throw one into the Anti Void, throw one into a post apocalypse, and get different results.
People freaking out over loki getting a kiss from his female counter part... like... guys... that is not the weirdest thing loki has done. Loki has turned himself into a mare got pregnant, gave birth to a 6 legged horse and gave that horse to his own father and loki never told him where that horse came from. Loki kissing his female counterpart is so tame compared to that. Only one crazier than loki is Deadpool.
It was an 8-legged horse. And in some versions of the mythology he also gave birth to Jormungandr, Fenrir, and Hel after eating his dead giant wife's heart. So yeah, he's done weirder than kiss another him.
I feel like half of the reason for the fandoms reaction to Loki x Sylvie was because there was a lot more people rooting for Loki x Mobius because they had more chemistry and on-screen time beforehand
As an identical twin, thank you for saying that we are different because many people just say we are the same person or just call us “The twins” or “Twin” instead of trying to see our differences and learn which one is which. Which takes away our individuality and makes many identical twins feel like they are not their own person :] Thank you
I've been into Sans AUs ever since like...june this year... I've been hyperfixated on Undertale and Deltarune (them being my special interests too) but never Sans AUs And here I am, shrieking and yelling over the smallest mention of them in a video 😭
Anyone remember when the Miraculous Ladybug fandom got really into Adrichat (shipping Adrien with his superhero alter ego) for a while a few years back? Surprised to not see a mention of that in here
I do! From what i remember it stemmed from a joke someone on tumblr made but i think after the alternate universe special some people started getting into it genuinely
I feel like Niffty would also be on Val's place(she is def kinkster) and Al could be on her place, because ew interacting with other people, but with yourself well now we are talking xD
I would like to say that the AU’s came before the Sancest and not the other way around. From my memory, Undertale was just very AUable. And two AUs in particular became essentially the fandoms collaborative project. UnderFell and UnderSwap. UnderFellbeing a “what if everyone who was good was evil and everyone who was evil was good?” AU. And then Underswap is a role swap AU. Then… the fandom looked at sans, their favorite guy, and went “oh! What if Sans because of his aforementioned fourth wall break abilities and awareness of other timelines let him meet the other version of himself??” And then the Selfcest happened. Papyrus also gets roped into it sometimes since he’s the fandoms other favorite guy and is related to Sans . From there the AUs, and then the sans getting shipped kinda just built on eachother on the same time. And also THE LORE. Because the fandom basically created a Multiverse that had like, rules and stuff. And was generally just its own thing only mostly based on undertale. It was totally possible to be a part of the Undertale fandom without generally being into the Sans AUs, but all sans AU fans were part of the Undertale fandom y’know? Now though, they’re generally thought of as interchangeable.
Thank you for explaining this because if you didn't I would've been compelled to do so instead against my will. I will say though, Underfell isn't a morality inversion au, it's just edgy undertale. Like on purpose. The fact that flowey is the one nice character is unrelated to the core premise.
@@--CHARLIE-- its OG concept was a morality inversion AU. Similarly Chara is nice in this AU, though it evolved more into "Undertale but Edgy" as time went on.
One small correction I want to make also (from the video, not your comment) is that sans doesn't actually know he's in a game, as far as I'm aware. He's aware of resets, different timelines, the fact there is an external observer, and he has found unique ways to abuse game-mechanics, but he doesn't believe that the world he's in is actually a video game nor does he remember things before resets. I think its a pretty big misconception but the real explanation for all of this is just that he's really observant, he can tell how many attempts the player is on fighting him, which many would believe is him actually remembering the previous resets like flowey does, but from the rest of his dialogue it becomes clear that sans simply observes minor details in frisk's body language that can tell him how many times they've died already.
Selfcest, truly the definition "If you can't love yourself...". Probably one of my favorite ship trope ever especially when it involves AUs, multiple timelines, and other such shenanigans
The story of Narcissus pisses me off. Not because of him, but because of the people around him. He was completely satisfied living a life without love, and they punished him for not saying yes to people wanting to date him. It's so stupid. Like, is it really "prideful" to just _not_ be interested in anyone?
I'm already in the Undertale/Undertale AU fandom and have been for a while, so I'm kinda desensitized to any type of alternate universe/time fuckery and I'm also pretty desensitized to the idea of selfsest. Me and my mom were watching the Loki series, and my mother made a comment about how "weird" it is that the show was making the blonde female Loki (I forgot her name) be the love interest of regular Loki. I was both laughing and crying internally because I have seen and shipped weirder.
the great thing about selfcest is how someone's views on it can tell you instantly whether to avoid them. if they think fictional characters in a scenario that is literally impossible is a serious moral problem, they are not going to be fun to hang out with. it's such a time saver, and it helps you avoid the corners of fandom who think writing spurious callout posts counts as a hobby!
Honestly, compared to the many other kinks and fetishes most people can think of. It is very unproblematic. The only plausible argument I ever saw was that it means you’re narcissistic. Obviously that doesn’t work because most people are usually in it for other characters and not themselves.
When I got the notification for this video and saw the title, my immediate first thought was "sanscest". Glad it was talked about because I honestly forgot that the Sans AUs are all technically the same person because of how different they are from each other.
My personal favourite example of selfcest is Dr. Henry Jekyll x Mr. Edward Hyde. There's just so much potential for it! (If you imagine that Hyde has a separate consciousness from Jekyll, which if you read the book, he doesn't.)
@@violetroses1997 Yes! I love Glass Scientists. I feel like the seperate consciousnesses and opposite color schemes really help fuel the ship in that adaptation
0:06 Unfortunately for me it's never "Oh no Coley what are you going to explain to me this time?" but always "Crap! How chronically online am I that I already know exactly what you're talking about?" lmao 😂
The Sanders Sides one is kinda funny to me because a lot of the fandom while I was in it LOVED AUs! Throw them into a small city apartment and give them superpowers! Turn them into fae who keeps adopting random people! Running low on canon characters to use? Don't worry, pull some from the other series on the channel!
The superpower fic in question for those wondering is called A Lesson In Practicality by Residentanchor. It also has a still in-progress sequel called Probable Theorem and the animation (which you can find here on UA-cam) was done by Robinsdraw. It features prinxiety and logicality, it’s a slow burn and it’s a very fun time! I’ve read the whole thing, do recommend.
I'm even in the UT fandom and I'm still baffled by the AUs lmao. My first ever reaction to seeing a bunch of different usernames in one server, all being Sans with an edgy prefix attached, was akin to an animation I saw where the original sans progressively meets all his alternates and screams in confusion. But they've grown on me, especially since a lot of friends like 'em. They're chaotic, endearing goofballs 😂
selfcest has always been kinda conflicting to me. its really weird but also i dont NOT like it.. you explained it best, its like a super intimate way of accepting yourself and i think thats strangely beautiful. super weird and unrealistic, but beautiful.
You also forgot one other notable example of this; the whole Markipliercest situation from a while back. Yes, people took all those variants of characters Markiplier played for his own original story, and shipped them. Are we surprised? Probably not, I’d assume.
Rule 127 of the internet: if your fandom is big enough, there’s at least one popular selfcest ship Also about 9:40 I’ve seen a good amount of people ship Focalors and Furina together as well
Focalors is Focalors’ divinity while Furina is her humanity, two parts of the same person If shipping the Sanders sides (multiple parts of the same person) together is selfcest, than by that logic shipping two parts of Focalors is also selfcest
Selfcest is the best, put yourself to the test. BD But also, I do wish people who don’t like it would just admit it’s a squick rather than make up reasons to hate it. It’s okay for something to just be a squick! It’s okay for something to just not gel with you! Pleasssssse I’m so tired in modern fandom. The only reason I’m still here is the stellar fanart and killer fanfic okay. 😭
Fr people keep using the logic that squick = bad, like that's the same rational behind a lot of queerphobia and such. It's more ethical and more honest to just say you don't like it instead of inventing stupid reasons why its bad after you've decided that it is.
I do like selfcest mainly because I think it's funny but I do prefer it when it's to versions of the same character that are different personality wise or even slightly physically like sans with their different aus or evil Onceler with normal Onceler
Or even just the real one and the one that is the same but is the clone and gets (likely negative) character development over being "just a copy" (that probably makes them a bit more edgy and unhinged and self-loathing than the original) I've not seen that used in a ship, but I love the idea. Not necessarily even with an existing clone either, one made for such a ship specifically also works. I don't know why I'm so hyperfixated on that scenario specifically but it could be really good. (And yes, I am aware I'm just describing Peter Parker and Ben Reilly but with a romantic dynamic instead of a sibling dynamic. What of it? Lol.)
Agreed, especially since I generally prefer ships with opposing color schemes/aesthetics/personalities, even when shipping different characters. It's just more interesting that way imo
this brings back memories of when we would make weddings for characters we ship together in an owl house rp game, and belos was always there, and belos was always being romantic WITH HIMSELF. we legit shipped belos with himself just because he has absolutely no chance at getting ANYONE
I shipped a lot of Sanscest back in the day, but they felt more like a species rather than alternate versions of the same person I'm usually fine with selfcest, I only don't like when it's the result from timetravel
Yk, the undertale fandom actually goes way deeper, fyi they didnt create different versions of sans to ship him with himself, it all started when a person imagined "what if the underground was actually a kill or be killed place?" As the character flowey says when he introduces us to the underground. And that person created designs a story and a fan game, people loved this idea and short after people thought, well why not make a universe where every character swaps personality with someone? And so we had the original universe, Undertale, the kill or be killed universe, underfell (because the creators name was something something and ended with fell) and a swap universe, underswap. After a bit of interaction between these characters torought the ask blogs, people mainly made sans meet other versions of himself since sans is the fandoms favorite character, and the fandom went kinda crazy with the universe creating, some people created universes with sans as the only character since everyone wanted sans and didnt care for other characters. Like Ink Sans, a protector of Alternate Universes, an artist whos job is to motivate the fandom to keep writting and creating content and also protecting universes from other universal dangers. Or Error sans, who after injecting determination in his soul, got trapped in an endless void and slowly went mad, which gave him anomaly and glitchy powers which he uses to destroy universes since he sees every universe who isnt the undertale, underfell or underswap as anomalies. Or ever Dreamtale, where its not actually a undertale universe but a tree of feelings goddess who got attacked and on her last moments divided her soul into one being of positive emotions and one being of negative emotions, and when quickly searching for bodies to have these 2 souls, she ended up finding underswap and coincidentally picked sans, yes its an AU where twin sanses are the positive emotions and negative emotions protectors, some shit happens and they end up becoming the main villain and main hero of the alternative universes, gathering other sans to help them defeat their twin and bring eternal negativity/positivity to all the multiverse After all this plot, the fandom actually realized the characters were so different they arent even slightly close to sans, personality wise, their mentality, likes, looks, everything is very different, and with no one else to ship, since the multiverse war happened between the star sanses and Bad sanses, made exclusivly as sans groups. People began shipping these different sanses with eachother
@MaimeBow lol same mate, I can't explain how deep go the roots of this fandom into my core, I caught myself giving an hour long speech just about dreamtale to a friend some hours ago ❤️🩹❤️🩹
I was watching this like "Ha ha, selfcest is so weird and interesting!" And then the Sanders Sides stuff came up and I realized that I was the fool, lol.
So true, i had never even heard of this, but i was like "huh, interesting concept" And then i got jumpscared by the sanders sides mention, like "well you definitely have a point....i feel like it's a bit more debatable/nuanced, but that is fair enough honestly" Seriously, how come the fandoms i end up in never have normal shipping, like between all the characters are technically the same person; the main ship both aren't human, mortal, or gendered; the characters are actually just real people playing a videogame; two people sharing the same body, and probably more stuff i'm forgetting, i've really had a crazy time here lol
I still can't believe Loki made Selfcest mainstream lol Like I was watching that with my family who do not understand fandom stuff at all so when it happened I think I was the only one who saw it coming. Like I was shocked that they would do this at all in a Marvel show on Disney, but I was at least familiar with the concept. My family on the other hand...
All I'm saying is that if there was a more-put-together version of me who traveled from the future just to give me hug and tell me i'm gonna be okay, I would be in pieces, sobbing.
solidly in the "ive been fucking waiting for this one" category. before the episode starts i wanna say that i literally do not see it as problematic. thats not ur family member thats You. it's the most consensual consent you can ever consent to. it's just you it's fine it's literally the 500 year old vampire vs 50 year old vampire deal
not to mention it's physically impossible. I feel like normal debates about morality can't really be applied to fiction tropes that are impossible irl (like you said, 500 year old vampire vs 50 year old vampire)
I'm having Undertale AU flashbacks... I used to write those oneshots! 😭 But it's a really big debate in the Clone Wars fandom. People are ALWAYS arguing about shipping the vode and the ethics of it.
This video has opened my eyes to selfcest and I am now shipping Charlie with her old design and I could not be happier. Thank you ❤️ (now I just gotta avoid haters)
As someone who's been in the Undertale AU shipping trenches, there are layers to the degree of selfcest some sanscest ships are honestly. Cause despite being Sans, not all are classic sans to the same degree (like, there are sanses that start out as a classic (Geno, Murder Time Trio, etc) vs sanses that are already starting as an au (Swap, Fell, etc)), let alone if some of them actually are a sans (the Dreamtale duo, Fresh)). Anyways, at this point I'm way too desensitised to selfcest tbh
You know they do. A lot of people have a vested interest in making basic fiction controversial and "wrong" so that nobody ever shows imagination and grows up viewing others with suspicion and paranoia, so these people can posit themselves as "safe" and "trustworthy". They're trying to start a culture war and it's working and we need to fight antis as the cryptofascists they are.
I know there's a million more instances of selfcest in fandom and Coley can't possibly get to them all so Im not complaining- but the whole time watching I couldn't stop thinking about the Rick and Morty fandom. The INSANE amount of self shipping for every character is so characteristic of the fandom in my mind! Not to mention the CANON relationships in the show. If you know you know.
You mentioning sancest made me realize that it was DEFENETLY my introduction to selcest as a young girl... and i fear it changed me forever because selfcest is SO fun to me xD In both a silly goofy no brain way but also in a weirdly visseral and meaphorical way... Meeting a version of yourself that caused harm to others, someone you dont want to ever ever be anymore... Or in a manifastation of your own self hatred... Make it weird and tragic and uncomfortable!!! But also funny and for the goofs. Very fun video, thanks for making this xD!!!
[0:25] unrelated to the video at all but. why did my first exposure to this image have to be analog horror. now i can't stop thinking "haha it's the funny dog from that analog horror video" when i know that's not where it came from
In Homestuck there is canon selfcest pairing (Karkat with his past/future versions) specifically in blackrom or kismetitude since he often was writing to himself from other point in timeline but also said that "if I hate myself so much why don't I hate marry myself" (blackrom or kismetitude being one type of troll romantic relationships focused on hating the other person but still finding them attractive)
That's _exactly_ who I thought of when I saw the video pop up in my feed lol. That and him imagining Jade kissing her alternate self, only to quickly wave that thought bubble away lol. It's too late, Karkat... we know exactly what you were thinking 😏
@@qwertyuiop.lkjhgfdsa not necessarily since Karkat had interactions with himself while on meteor (or the part about hate marrying was in dream bubbles) where she couldn't austipice for them
Danny Phantom does this too with Pitch Pearl, though I've definitely seen it flip flop between actual selfcest (the ep where he splits himself in two gave people ALOT to run with) and the YuGiOh situation.
The ship crossmare (a ship between cross sans and nightmare sans) is actually how i discovered fanfiction somewhere around when i was 16 or 15 maybe younger can't really rememeber my exact age because of my Autism and ADHD when i discovered fanfiction it immediately started a hyperfixtion with fanfiction and sans aus that spiraled out of control oh boy that was one heck of ride it even got to the point I got grounded when my parents found out how spicy the things i had been reading it was so bad i wasn't able to read fanfiction again untill i turned 18 years old lol
i had known what selfcest was for quite some time (was in the undertale fandom back in the day) but i’d never really understood the appeal and thought it was kinda weird until i accidentally stumbled in to doing it myself with some OCs. to make a long story short i ended up creating two versions of an OC to ship them with another friend’s character that i couldn’t do in canon, but due to the events of the DnD game they were from, they ended up meeting said other character anyways. I had then realized that made for an incredible poly ship, having a poly relationship where two alternate universe versions of the same character dated each others’ partners they met before the universes converged, and so it just ended up naturally falling into place that the two versions of the character would end up dating each other as well and by accidentally exploring that, i had realized this character, who has a lot of self-worth issues, would genuinely find a lot of comfort and confidence upon dating an alternate universe version of themselves, and so it became extremely important to these characters’ arcs that they were dating themselves. and upon realizing that interesting character potential i started to really GET why people like selfcest. i now have a selfcest ship in a fandom as well and the reason i like said ship is for a lot of the same reasons i do with my OCs!
Scaramouche x Wanderer mentioned, but not the way bigger Dottorecest..? Dottore is actually capable of selfcest in canon, he has different selves at different ages that can interact, and the fandom also has plenty of fanmade Dottore segments as well.
One ship I’m not surprised but still am surprised you didn’t mention is the Modulecest from Project Diva Basically, in Project Diva, you get to pick out costumes aka, modules for the Crypton Future Media Vocaloids (Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, Megurine Luka, Meiko & Kaito) and people shipped them with each other, even with modules for the same Vocaloid Easily the biggest one out of the Modulecest was Lencest aka the Len modules with popular ships like Punkish x Blue Moon, Blue Moon x Aitetsu, Strange Dark x Starmine, Trickster x Senbu, etc and save to say…I have some too (Lance x Hansel my beloved)
what i'm most surprised about is the lack of mikucest. there's literally hundreds of variants of her yet there's barely anyone who had the idea of shipping them
i''ve seen people say that its problematic because it "promotes narcissism", which is the stupidest argument ive ever heard because narcisistic personality disorder is an actual mental disorder and cannot be 'promoted", that's like saying that something promotes anxiety or bipolar disorder, it's not a choice someone makes to have or not, and its also not an inherently bad thing to be.
Honestly I'm surprised you didn't bring up Underverse when talking about Sanscest, it kinda helps with depicting different versions of the same character and how those characters would interact and create conflict with one another. If you haven't seen it, I'd greatly recommend checking it out!
As an Undertale fan who has been eyeballs deep in AUs for years, I've had a lot of exposure to selfcest. I've personally always thought it was really weird, but I don't really have any specific problems with it. I don't really partake in it outside of shitposting, but I'm not gonna fight people who do genuinely like it, that would just be stupid.
as someone in the sanders sides fandom, I laughed loud seeing the video title...it´s technically like 90 smth percent of ships in there edit: got jumpscared at the actual mention of the show in here omg
This just reminded me of my favourite show (a sitcom from the 80s called Red Dwarf) having canonical Self-cest and m-preg in the SAME EPISODE within the first two seasons 😭
The selfcest pairing I've read the most of is Pitch Pearl (Danny Fenton/Danny Phantom). Sometimes I think it doesn't count as selfcest, like in AUs where Danny and Phantom were always different people, but I enjoy it more when they are the same person. One fic i remember in particular (may not have been intended as Pitch Pearl) had Danny sad and lonely in bed and wishing someone would hug him and he unintentionally duplicated and Phantom gave him a hug and he cried and it was really sweet.
As a obsessive Undertale AU fangirl, I can say with confidence that I LOVE seeing where stories can go with Sanscest, where the romantic relations come from, how they react to figuring out that they actually are liking a different version of essentially themselves, seeing the drama that ensuse, ect. I used to see the argument for Clone Wars and when the clones were being shipped with each other, then people would get mad and be saying the stuff of where 'they're basically the same person!' And I'm just over here going 'No they're not XD' I'm glad you were able to explain the difference between the two, and do it in a way that I can use to explain to my friends if I ever need to haha Oh my gosh this was a lot longer than I meant it to be, aaaaa! Thank you for yet another amazing video, Coley!!!^^
I remember seeing the episode of SPN that introduced the Winchesters from an alternate dimension and thinking "oh, the fic's gonna get weird now." Yes, I know. We were already there. But the idea of Dean with Richchester Dean who he hated so much was so funny.
My take is: there's no thought crime and no thought heroism, and thought is also absolutely not an automatic precursor to action. Be as fictitiously "degenerate" as you need to be for catharsis and let other people be too. Puritanism creates more criminals than enjoying fictional incest ever will.
ive never heard of selfcest till this video, so its my first time learning of this concept. but when i was watching loki and i saw loki kiss sylvie i was like... thats kinda hot 😭and my friends think im crazy, and i feel kinda crazy
what I find compelling about selfcest is how it can be used to explore and externalize a character's relationship with themselves. it's especially compelling with characters who have reinvented themselves in some way, sometimes multiple times, who may _hate_ the past version(s) of themself for being weak/not enough. idk, I find throwing two versions of the same character against each other until they self destruct way more fun than making them fall in love
12:29 fun fact, in a spin off(?) of Yugioh, Yugioh Arc-V, there are in fact doppelgängers. Yuya, Yuto, Yuri, and Yuto are the same person and Yuzu, Serena, Rin, and Ruri are the same person. So there is technically an option to selfship in the yugioh franchise 🙃

@@EmmaPie13 I would think so yes, it's the version of them.
Also the definition of "Go fuck yourself!" depending on how spicy you want to go.

Omg she started talking the Loki Series right after I posted this.
"Because I have seen and shipped weirder" it's a great phrase, ngl 😂
Literally just took my experience and claimed it 😂😂😂
@@Fandomcrazy09 nice to see I’m not alone in the desensitized thing. Thank you UTMV
the great thing about selfcest is how someone's views on it can tell you instantly whether to avoid them. if they think fictional characters in a scenario that is literally impossible is a serious moral problem, they are not going to be fun to hang out with. it's such a time saver, and it helps you avoid the corners of fandom who think writing spurious callout posts counts as a hobby!
Fr some people take shipping so seriously 😭

I write homoerotic J x H fanfics on AO3 that explore their codependency. I also got into the ship more mainly from Glass Scientists. Any fans here?

The Sanders Sides one is kinda funny to me because a lot of the fandom while I was in it LOVED AUs! Throw them into a small city apartment and give them superpowers! You also forgot one other notable example of this; the whole Markipliercest situation from a while back. Yes, people took all those variants of characters Markiplier played for his own original story, and shipped them. Are we surprised? Probably not, I’d assume.
Yeah and the whole Markiplier ego lore thing
This also happened with jacksepticeye
Rule 127 of the internet: if your fandom is big enough, there’s at least one popular selfcest ship
Also about 9:40 I’ve seen a good amount of people ship Focalors and Furina together as well
RIGHT?? The more the fandom grows, the more the sprouts are going to grow.
It's not really selfcest
@@samuelbutler3332 hmm, i guess its debatable. focalors separated her humanity as furina so i think it counts
Focalors is Focalors’ divinity while Furina is her humanity, two parts of the same person
If shipping the Sanders sides (multiple parts of the same person) together is selfcest, than by that logic shipping two parts of Focalors is also selfcest
So true!! In my fandom we only have one selfcest fic!!! It’s a masterpiece!! Changed the whole trajectory of my life!!

Fr people keep using the logic that squick = bad, like that's the same rational behind a lot of queerphobia and such. It's more ethical and more honest to just say you don't like it instead of inventing stupid reasons why its bad after you've decided that it is.
@@--CHARLIE-- People just cannot own their dislikes, huh?
"what is selfcest?" the best shipping trope
real!!!!!
I do like selfcest mainly because I think it's funny but I do prefer it when it's to versions of the same character that are different personality wise or even slightly physically like sans with their different aus or evil Onceler with normal Onceler
Or even just the real one and the one that is the same but is the clone and gets (likely negative) character development over being "just a copy" (that probably makes them a bit more edgy and unhinged and self-loathing than the original)
I've not seen that used in a ship, but I love the idea.

As someone who fell into the undertale AU fandom all the way back in 2017 Im VERY excited for this one
Undertale aus have had a grip on me since 2018 lmao
samee
I shipped a lot of Sanscest back in the day, but they felt more like a species rather than alternate versions of the same person
I'm usually fine with selfcest, I only don't like when it's the result from timetravel
Or ever Dreamtale, where its not actually a undertale universe but a tree of feelings goddess who got attacked and on her last moments divided her soul into one being of positive emotions and one being of negative emotions, and when quickly searching for bodies to have these 2 souls, she ended up finding underswap and coincidentally picked sans, yes its an AU where twin sanses are the positive emotions and negative emotions protectors, some shit happens and they end up becoming the main villain and main hero of the alternative universes, gathering other sans to help them defeat their twin and bring eternal negativity/positivity to all the multiverse
After all this plot, the fandom actually realized the characters were so different they arent even slightly close to sans, personality wise, their mentality, likes, looks, everything is very different, and with no one else to ship, since the multiverse war happened between the star sanses and Bad sanses, made exclusivly as sans groups. People began shipping these different sanses with eachother
I could watch a 10 hour video essay breaking down these aus and not get bored lmao, i crave it

And then there are Sans' who are just the same character but in different points of time
Like error and geno (and fatal)
also in doctor who master selfcest (or more specifically master/missy) is mentioned in canon
Why do I feel like Coley'd be the type of person to have covered this already and it's honestly kinda shocking that she hasn't yet and only now is 😭
I genuienly had no idea that selfcest was a subject of discourse. Do people just want everything to be "problematic" now?

8:23 i’m now realising sander sides is selfcest
i had known what selfcest was for quite some time (was in the undertale fandom back in the day) but i’d never really understood the appeal and thought it was kinda weird until i accidentally stumbled in to doing it myself with some OCs. to make a long story short i ended up creating two versions of an OC to ship them with another friend’s character that i couldn’t do in canon, but due to the events of the DnD game they were from, they ended up meeting said other character anyways. I had then realized that made for an incredible poly ship, having a poly relationship where two alternate universe versions of the same character dated each others’ partners they met before the universes converged, and so it just ended up naturally falling into place that the two versions of the character would end up dating each other as well
and by accidentally exploring that, i had realized this character, who has a lot of self-worth issues, would genuinely find a lot of comfort and confidence upon dating an alternate universe version of themselves, and so it became extremely important to these characters’ arcs that they were dating themselves. and upon realizing that interesting character potential i started to really GET why people like selfcest. i now have a selfcest ship in a fandom as well and the reason i like said ship is for a lot of the same reasons i do with my OCs!
Scaramouche x Wanderer mentioned, but not the way bigger Dottorecest..?
Dottore is actually capable of selfcest in canon, he has different selves at different ages that can interact, and the fandom also has plenty of fanmade Dottore segments as well.
One ship I’m not surprised but still am surprised you didn’t mention is the Modulecest from Project Diva
Basically, in Project Diva, you get to pick out costumes aka, modules for the Crypton Future Media Vocaloids (Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, Megurine Luka, Meiko & Kaito) and people shipped them with each other, even with modules for the same Vocaloid
Easily the biggest one out of the Modulecest was Lencest aka the Len modules with popular ships like Punkish x Blue Moon, Blue Moon x Aitetsu, Strange Dark x Starmine, Trickster x Senbu, etc and save to say…I have some too (Lance x Hansel my beloved)
SELFCEST IS MY FAVORITE THING EVER THATS WHAT IT IS!!!! CLONES OR YOU FROM THE FUTURE OR ANOTHER TIMELINE I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT
what i'm most surprised about is the lack of mikucest. there's literally hundreds of variants of her yet there's barely anyone who had the idea of shipping them
jp fans shipped the mikus from the pokemon collab together a lot, like ghost!miku x fairy!miku and fighting!miku x rock!miku
Personally I am kinda obsessed with the brand of selfcest that is the older self with the younger self
Add in a time travel element and you're golden
i''ve seen people say that its problematic because it "promotes narcissism", which is the stupidest argument ive ever heard because narcisistic personality disorder is an actual mental disorder and cannot be 'promoted", that's like saying that something promotes anxiety or bipolar disorder, it's not a choice someone makes to have or not, and its also not an inherently bad thing to be.

I've personally always thought it was really weird, but I don't really have any specific problems with it. I don't really partake in it outside of shitposting, but I'm not gonna fight people who do genuinely like it, that would just be stupid.

Seeing this appear as the first video on my UA-cam recommended was like getting punched directly in the face
Do you remember how the title of the fic?
I'm surprised she didn't mention Linkcest. The ship of the various Links across the legend or zelda games.
I knew we’d end up here eventually.,. A whole other meaning to “self love.” xD
As a obsessive Undertale AU fangirl, I can say with confidence that I LOVE seeing where stories can go with Sanscest, where the romantic relations come from, how they react to figuring out that they actually are liking a different version of essentially themselves, seeing the drama that ensuse, ect.
I used to see the argument for Clone Wars and when the clones were being shipped with each other, then people would get mad and be saying the stuff of where 'they're basically the same person!'
And I'm just over here going 'No they're not XD'
I'm glad you were able to explain the difference between the two, and do it in a way that I can use to explain to my friends if I ever need to haha
Oh my gosh this was a lot longer than I meant it to be, aaaaa!

I'm surprised she didn't mention the Flippy x Fliqpy ship from happy tree friends is that a selfcest ship? 🤔

insert the "My own clone! Now neither of us will be virgins!" image here
what I find compelling about selfcest is how it can be used to explore and externalize a character's relationship with themselves. it's especially compelling with characters who have reinvented themselves in some way, sometimes multiple times, who may _hate_ the past version(s) of themself for being weak/not enough. idk, I find throwing two versions of the same character against each other until they self destruct way more fun than making them fall in love
