There really is no hatred between Igbos and Yorubas, what you have is a power struggle. Nigerians have been acculturated to hate one another so the Oyinbo can tell them who they want. The Brits created enmity to rule so we do not unite against them. Now, that Oyinbo is no longer here, the struggle continues, but in the meantime Nigeria continues to rot! They need to get over themselves and unite the nation for the greater good.

This hate continues even outside of Nigeria.
I'm from Benin, but I live in the UK. My street is 50% populated by Nigerians, mostly Yorubas. Since the first time my Yoruba neighbours asked me which tribe I'm from, 8yrs ago, and I told them, they've barely spoken to me ever since. Haven't done a single thing to them. Funny thing is my Arab and White neighbours are more friendly and look out for me more than my Yoruba neighbours. Go figure.

This Yoruba hatred on the Igbos stems from Awolowo in the 1950s who refusing to concede defeat in the western region elections after the victory of Zik's NCNC party, decided to play the tribal card and had elected leaders defect to his AG party. Thus the Yoruba hatred on the Igbos was sown. Awolowo as Finance minister displayed this again by seizing all the money of the Igbos in the banks and gave them only £2 to start life afresh. The Igbos are still richer and wealthier than the Yorubas today. Tinubu and Sanwo Olu are still today playing the same tribal sentiment card like their Father Awolowo.

There is a root in politics. An arrangement between Zik and Awo fell through and we are all eating breakfast for it till today. That's where the trust issue began in my view. is there a way to heal from the wounds of the past? Perhaps, if we decide we are one country and not tribes.

@@adenrelemofolasayo2778 The problem is in Nigeria we don't have nationhood because we are a nation of different major/minority tribes and particularly because the seed of "my tribal identity first" was sown deep before the country became independent which led to unchecked massive endless corruption and looting. It just cannot work with our system of government from the center. Check Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc it was the same problem. It only worked in Switzerland because there was a common goal to create a country and all the tribes (German, French, Italian, Roman) have equal rights and opportunities as they operatea true federal system where the regions are stronger and thr center is weaker. It's just a matter of time, Nigeria will be balkanized and I would wish to see it in my lifetime. Ask yourself why Ahmadu Bello was more interested in becoming the premier of the north than prime Minister. Because the regional government was stronger.

Awolowo who is viewed as the favorite son of the Yoruba was very treacherous against Igbos. The best way to describe his behavior with Azikiwe and later with Ojukwu can only be described as two-faced. If there is anything as for the final show of an informed Igbos distrust of Yorubas is the abandoned property and 20 pound policy pushed by Awolowo after Igbo experienced geniocide at the hands of Nigeria.
One would ask why do this to a people that were never your direct enemy unlike the Fulani...unless you have deep envy and hatred of them.
You cannot point to any equivalent offences of the Igbo against the Yoruba. The only people that are confused about this subject don't know history. Yorubas are aware because their elders push the same Igbophobia propoganda that is the staple of "One Nigeria."

    • @kehindeogunleye5611

Please stop the propaganda and fabricated lies; produce facts and evidence instead. The Igbos resent the Yorubas because they believe the Yoruba people worked against them during the civil war, which is entirely misguided. Azikiwe was a tool in the hands of the colonialists- more or less a political jobber. Azikiwe forged an alliance between the Igbos and the Northerners. It was this alliance that planted the seeds of resentment towards the Igbos in the Northern region (hear from Ahmadu Bello: ua-cam.com/video/5_odAy4rVz8/v-deo.html). Please hold Ojukwu responsible for leading Igbos to a war he didn't prepare for. Stop blaming the Yoruba people for the failure and terrible mistakes of your past leaders. Regarding the abandoned properties, these videos refute your claim (1) By Onyeka Onwenu -ua-cam.com/video/eqloDz6smcw/v-deo.html - watch from 20:00 to 21:10); (2) Asiodu -ua-cam.com/video/BhKaBRXo1iU-/v-deo.html 19:00 to 20:00 . Awolowo even helped with the implementation of the 20-pound policy(on humanitarian grounds); if it were solely up to Gowon, nothing would have been offered to the Igbos. Yet, you think the Yorubas hate the Igbos. Please, in which other region of Nigeria, besides Igboland, do you find more Igbos with access to landed properties?. You could also read this book instead of propagating falsehood: "Why we struck: The Story of the First Nigerian Coup". Also, Aguiyi Ironsi (an Igbo man) abolished regional system of government and created the unitary system("One Nigeria") that you are blaming the Yoruba people for. Adekunle Fajuyi (a Yoruba officer) lost his life because he tried to prevent the Northern military officers from eliminating Ironsi in Ibadan.

Yorubas do not get anything from Igbos. Igbos get everything from Yorubas and Yoruba land. Yorubas will miss nothing if all Igbos go back to SE. But Igbos cannot survive that situation. Igbos are not qualified to discuss tribalism with Yorubas. Because Igbos are disastrously tribalistic. Every Yoruba man that went to Igboland to do successful business went missing and got killed.
IGBOS OFFER OTHERS NOTHING apart from destruction. So you guys should stf up. Yet they are not less than 6 million on Yoruba soil

And I'm not just saying it because I'm Igbos, but of all the ethnic groups in nigeria, Igbos love Yorubas more. That's why a yoruba man will easily marry an igbo lady without stress. Watching and listening to this video I detected clear overtones of bias and divisiveness on the part of the host. Further evidence of this can be seen in the way this host has responded to comments from opposite sides of the Yoruba vs Igbo debate. On the one hand she berates those who call out her video as being biased and insults them by saying that they are “very stupid” whereas on the other hand she is very understanding and accepting of those who are equally objectionable about Yorubas and call for a New Biafra. Let’s be clear here that for a Biafra to exist would probably mean the spilling of lots of innocent blood.
If her intent was not to be divisive she should have cited examples from both sides as examples of how irrational the hate is. However all she did was cite examples of Yoruba hate which she has posted on social media. For the record, I could tell you of many instances where both groups have been hateful towards one another and also many instances when they have been helpful to each other.

The Igbo man is too busy hustling and trying to create his comfort zone. Most of the comment is drawn out of envy cos naturally, if others take a step, the igbo man tends to take 3 steps more and he does it not out of trying to spit other tribes men but out of his natural instincts for performance and achievement. @@keepitsimple313 Please mention the names of the books and share the links to the specific documentaries you referred to. Based on my observation, most Igbos got wrong indoctrination from their ancestors about the Yorubas. I recommend this book to you: "Why we struck: The Story of the First Nigerian Coup". You will then understand that Nnamdi Azikiwe was an instrument of the colonialists and Ojukwu caused the death of the Igbos by leading them to a war he never prepared for. He even wrongly executed brilliant Igbo officers, including a brilliant Yoruba officer(Victor Banjo) who was fighting on the side of the Eastern army solely on the grounds of suspicion/false accusation. I should also remind you that it was Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi that abolished the regional system of government in Nigeria -turning Nigeria to "One Nigeria(unitary)" system which everybody is now a victim of. Also, various sources confirmed that after the civil war, properties belonging to the Igbos were returned to them in Lagos, yet Igbos see Yorubas(an entire tribe) as their enemies- Evidence 1 by Onyeka Onwenu (ua-cam.com/video/eqloDz6smcw/v-deo.html - watch from 20:00 to 21.10); evidence 2-Asiodu (ua-cam.com/video/BhKaBRXo1iU-/v-deo.html 19:00 to 20:00) . If you look at Nigeria today, the southwest is the only region where you find other tribes (mostly Igbos) thriving, buying properties etc. That gesture is almost unrequited for the Yorubas in other parts of Nigeria. Finally, the Igbos claimed Awolowo hated them, but Awolowo made free education accessible to all tribes(including Igbos) in the old western region---Igbos didn't even get free education in the old eastern region. I will end by saying that the current crop of politicians in southwest Nigeria are not true ambassadors of the Yoruba people; they thrive on ethnic/tribal division and will only use tribal sentiments exhibited by the Igbo communities in their respective states against them.

When I interact with them, I may be able to have a better perspective of where they are coming from and probably change their minds with superior argument and evidence. i wouldn't dismiss people without hearing them out. I wouldn't say hate comes more from one side because someone else could have a totally opposite experience. In interacting with them, I would want to know what experiences shaped their views on a people? Are they basing their judgement on one experience or is there a pattern? i would want to know so I will ask questions. Those of us you are asking may not have their experience so we can't speak from their perspectives. It may be real experiences and it may be untrue stereotypes. I would also go into history on the people groups because only an understanding of the past can help deal with the present and make for a better future. Is there a history behind all these brouhaha? What was said? Who said it? Who did what? When? Why? With whom? What was the result? How do we fix it? That's the way forward.

I regard and respect everyone and I do not pay premium to race, ethnicity, etc. see people as people of God and go from there. Just my little input. God bless you.

It boils down to upbringing and circle of friends you have. If you grew up around your parents hating and talking about other cultures, you'll automatically be like them. Just recently, I read about one Majekodunmi, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Egbaland, who was a retired army officer and a medical doctor, in his 90s, said that Obasanjo's father is an Igbo police officer and that was why Obasanjo was supporting an Igbo person (Peter Obi) for president. Despite this old man's age, army training and education, he only saw tribe as the differentiating factor in the past presidential election. It is what it is.
I live in the United States and the most referrals I get for my small business comes from a Yoruba lady and I am Igbo. My circle of friends here are from different ethnicity/tribes and nobody is disrespectful of each other. It's just sad seeing people being stopped from voting because they look like "Igbos".
Like you rightfully stated, some Igbos are also hateful of Yoruba and could be disrespectful too.

Envy, nothing else. Though it still points back to the Awo-Zik pre independence NCNC election as one of the commenters opined which is true if you're a student of history and political science.
The modern day Yoruba hatred for Igbo (The Old Eastern Region inclusive) is borne out of successful and braggadocio nature of the Easterners.
I've lived and still living with both, the hatred is more from the Westerners, you are very correct. In fact, the Easterners trust their non tribal persons than theirs. This is the solemn truth about this matter. History shows that the SW always betray the Easterners politically. GEJ, PMB and BAT Eras should be a proof to that.

My Opinion. No one was born with a hatred for any tribe... It's either fed by Parents, Neighbours, Peers, Media, News, or Experience... The geographical spread in Nigeria speaks a lot about how accommodating any tribe is. If any part has less of other tribes it speaks volumes of their tribalistic Nature and the geo-political regions can't be wished away any policy to straighten the system should be implemented across board and mind you tribalism is not only in Nigeria its everywhere in the world. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Let he that comes to Equity come with clean hands

Kanye West is not a pauper despite what he said. Sometimes one has to speak up. As for the issue with Yorubas and Igbos. It is not rocket science. Nigeria is a geographical expression and not a country. When you group people together who have nothing in common then that becomes the genesis of future conflict. Every tribe has good and bad. Let us keep deceiving ourselves. At the end of the day I was raised to look at the individual person not the tribe. I am a proud Igbo man and whoever wants to hate me that is their own wahala. As for the musical artist you mentioned....nobody really cares what he thinks. Many people have to be seen to be relevant so they will often say things out of stupidity!!!! Many people from the Green white Green nation don't know the history of their so called nation. The last elections was nothing new if you know history when you see things happen in the future it does not surprise you.

And in any case, all of these hatred discourse is big on the public space because of the person who is ruling Nigeria. The father of ethnic bigotry and divisions. Evil begets evil. The ethnic divisions and contentions suit their purpose. So they can go looting the common wealth, while you all fight each other

If her intent was not to be divisive she have cited examples from both sides as examples of how irrational the hate is. However all she did was cite examples of Yoruba hate which she has posted on social media. For the record, I could tell you of many instances where both groups have been hateful towards one another and also many instances when they have been helpful to each other.
