    Always a pleasure to watch some quality welding. Keep up the good work Matt 👍

    Glad the hand wheel worked out! And I love the little model engines! As a huge Welsh narrow-gauge fan, I nearly lost it seeing the little Fairlie. I haven't seen many in live-steam!
    Granted, I haven't seen any live-steam in person. There aren't any clubs near where I live, and most of my collecting is tinplate Marx trains from the '30-'60s.
    Anyway, good luck on the engines! Can't wait to see the little steamers puffing along.

    Hey Matt maybe a little loc-tite on the pin too make sure it stays secure and I am always amazed at the level of detail that they put into those steam engines

      That pin is press fit, there is no way its coming out 😂. That 7 1/4” gauge Duke of Gloucester with the working Caprotti valve gear was a masterpiece of a rebuild they did a couple of years ago. Little bear is way better in the flesh!! All the best, Matt 👍

      I think thats 'Whatever works is allowed', somedays metric, somedays imperial, sometimes both!! All the best, Matt👍

    I live in the States, but have worked for a German company for almost 27yrs. I use metric any time I can now, even though my machines are all in Imperial. Do woodworking in metric too... Went out and purchased a metric/Inch tape measure a few years ago. Much better working in metric than inch IMO.
    The new/bigger machines I'm looking at buying in the next few years are still Imperial, but I'm going to buy pre-installed DRO's for them, so I can use them as metric machines.

      the only time i hate metric? cutting threads. almost tempted to throw a metric leadscrew on the lathe. seeing as this is supposed to be a metric country...
      oh... and having my cnc mill with imperial ballscrews. meant it defaulted to imperial. and the number of times i forgot to switch over, or failed to include that "G21" command... man that makes a mess!

      Jeff, I knew you'd be a trouble maker!! Metric over Imperial, in the USA.....how on earth did you sneak that contraband tape measure into the country?!?
      I learned to use both as I worked in a workshop where you got drawings in both and half the staff worked in metric and other half imperial!! I was the trouble maker who would purposely mix the two together to confuse them both!! 😂 All the best, Matt 👍

      @@MattChiversWorkshop LOL!! Believe it or not, we're not all ignoramuses! Though we, as a country still use Imperial as a standard, a lot of industry uses Metric, either because they're companies based outside the US, or they're doing it to be compatible with the rest of the industrial world.
      I don't understand why we haven't converted to Metric... They were talking about it when I first entered grade school 52yrs ago. Somewhere along the way, some decided that Imperial was worth keeping (bewildering I know).
      At least science and engineering here in the States is mostly done in Metric. Go to Uni and most of all of that is strictly Metric based.
      It's funny though... All the stuff we do at work... Metric. We work with customers that have issues, mostly Imperial. Maddening sometimes!

      I grew up with both in Australia. Living in America I’ve given up trying to use metric. Learning letter number drills and numbered screws makes no sense.

    • @paradiselost9946
      @paradiselost9946 7 місяців тому

      @@rallymax2 ahhh, the old "six foot of 90-35..." gotta love mixed measurements.
      old guys were always like..."you know what a foot is?"
      car tyres? always in both units, other than that oddball set of ferrari rims of 600mm...
      australia is even better as we also have the added challenge of freaking whitworth... ever pulled apart, say, a howard rotavator with its "not quite metric, but neither are they imperial" sized bolts?
      or just looking at a whitworth spanner and trying to come to terms with why 3/8 is about 15mm...
      yeah, unless absolutely necessary, i tend to drill and tap everything "vintage" to something slightly more... "normal".

    You have quite a bit of backlash in that handwheel. Mine has less than a 1/4 turn. Probably nothing to be overly worried about. Tearing into it to fix it will be quite the challenge. I don't know what parts availability is like in the UK compared to the US.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  7 місяців тому

      Well we can get parts but in most cases they are twice to three times more expensive than U.S. I’ve wondered if it would be cheaper to import them. All the best, Matt 👍

      @@MattChiversWorkshop I shipped a set of imperial depth mic's to a friend in York and it was VERY expensive. I am frustrated that we don't have some kind of postal rate agreement between our greatest allies.

      Yeah It’s same going from UK to US, I do lots of orders to US and we are on the verge of the postage being more than the products, it’s ridiculous. I don’t understand why it’s shot through the roof, it’s rather frustrating. All the best, Matt 👍

    if i ever get myself a bridgeport, i have one major modification to perform before anything else...
    MOVE THE POWER SWITCH!
    shudder.
    in that early morning fog before coffee, i once reached for the spindle lock. spanner in chuck...
    lets just say, im lucky? never found that spanner. even when the shop was cleared out in a move, we never found that spanner. and i still have all fingers and my thumbs.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  7 місяців тому

      Never had an issue with the power switch, well unless the knee is right down. The only switch you can knock on it is the off switch, the on is sunken. My Dad lost the old lathe chuck key in the 1990's in a similar way......its never been found even after we cleared the place out!! Maybe they were sent to another dimension! All the best, Matt.👍

      @@MattChiversWorkshop power switch/reversing switch...whatever... that one that you reach up towards the motor for... passing the quill lock to reach...
      moments of absent mindedness that show one should "engage brain first"...
      yes, things always find the mysterious hole, or entrance to that unknown dimension. just had a capacitor do it a few minutes ago. watch it fall... where the hell IS IT?
