Great work, Matt. It can take longer to prep and paint a part than it does to make it. I always paint my locos as I go. The up side of this is that the loco only needs to be assembled once. The down side is that paint can get chipped or damaged during subsequent work, and there is the risk of finding pesky little jobs that need welding on painted metal. I'm currently painting the main frame for a 7.25" gauge single Fairlie and plan to get it mounted on the power unit and bogie this week.
Thanks Richard, yes there is a risk of accidental damage but think it’s one I’m willing to take on future projects. This has taken a long time but I’m happy the end is in sight and we will be back to working on new parts. All the best, Matt 👍
Nothing wrong with making a video of stripping cleaning painting. But understandable that it's a long hard job, and filming anything makes doing the thing takes 3+ times longer. Glad you're sticking with it, and remaining your cheerful self. 😊❤
Thanks Kaylee, much appreciated. Yeah takes a ridiculous amount of time filming. Definitely sticking with it.....cheerful maybe have to review that 😂. All the best, Matt.
No need to apologise Matt, juggling normal life can be hard enough without finding time to film and edit every bit of progress. But I can say 'wow' looking mighty good now with a lick of paint. Look forward to the next update. Laters
Thanks Tony, Much appreciated. Yes life is very full without the added extra of UA-cam, but its still fun, and I have a great community of supporters who make it all worth while. All the best, Matt 👍
Thanks very much for the update Matt, very much appreciated. It’s only those of us who have actually built something that understands the amount of work and time involved in building a steam engine. In my view you have made excellent progress not backwards, as the chassis looks quality with the paintwork in progress. Don’t let the irrelevant one(s) get to you as they wouldn’t have a clue even how to start such a project. Keep the videos coming as I greatly enjoy the process 👍👍👍👏
Thanks Brian, your support is much appreciated as always. I really can't believe how different the frames look painted, I keep nipping in to check on what they look like again in awe! 😂 All the best, Matt 👍
Hey up matt , know the feeling well the frames for the l&b drove me literally round the bend - when i checked them for square thet were 3 mm out from corner to corner yet the buffer beams were parallel to within 10 thou - one of those weard anomalies that you have to let go - only got two more plates to bolt in then its hornbbocks ,spring hangers and axle blocks in , same here taken me 2 years and not a lot show ,great video all the best matt😊
Thanks Jonathan, I think once I've finished painting all the parts I had finished, it will feel a lot more advanced once they are fitted back to the frames. The boiler ain't that far behind, so once thats here it opens up the door to a whole new are of the loco to build and tackle. Making the build more exciting I feel. A lot to do before it arrives in the videos though. You will get there with your project, I think we all hit points where we hit a lull in the build, breaking through them is always the great bit, like painted frames!! All the best, Matt 👍
Nice update Matt, I understand how you must have felt pulling it all down but look how far forward you are now. It looks amazing and that hard graft has really paid off. There’s a community of supporters here to gee you on if you are struggling with it. Always remember you can lean on us for a bit of moral support. Thanks for putting these videos out, do that at a pace that suits you, we will be here patiently waiting to watch the next instalment!
Thanks Paul, your support is much appreciated. Yeah its really depressing ripping something apart as far as I did, but yeah the result is definitely worth it. Just need to get it all done, so I can get it running!! I want to drive it!! 😂. All the best, Matt 👍
@@MattChiversWorkshop keep that thought of driving it in your mind and all the years of pleasure your going to get out of it. Remember that when you face a challenge and it will all be worth it! I wish I had your skills to make one myself
Hey Matt 👋🏼 Mate….. dismantling to ‘finish’ bits really sucks 😖. BUT….. it’s a reality of building stuff eh? Here in ‘Sunny’ Sydney ( 🥶🥶) , it’s been raining like cats ‘n dogs for bloody months 😩 So ‘flash’ rust is like a rash gone wild. I too have been dismantling, pickling, and etch-priming stuff. At least, with a wee 5” loco, it’s doable in my workshop ( coupla tanks had to be made out of guttering… but no biggie really). Anyhoo mate, even though you’ve been AWOL for a few weeks…. it’s all for a good cause. Love ya work.. Robert
Hi Robert, yep it really does suck. You need to move north a bit closer to Queensland, might be a little warmer. So you’re getting Lancashire weather in Sydney, it rains here a lot, this year summer lasted all of 3 days!! It’s rained since then for weeks!! We are getting temperatures 10 degree C less than normal and we are told temperatures are rising!! At least our workshops are under cover! All the best, Matt 👍
A big thanks for the update, it's very much appreciated. The frame and the wheel sets are now looking the biz. It really shows the passion that you have with this loco build, and I'm glad that you are sharing it with us. It's a total joy to watch. All the best - Fletch -
Thanks Fletch, much appreciated. I'm glad the passion is coming through, it has been a dream of mine for many years to own a steam engine, I'm not just going to own one, I will have built it too, which is really quite special. Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos, makes it all worthwhile. All the best, Matt 👍
It may have seemed a backwards step stripping it down, but that in itself is a forward step. My wagon project which was going to be a quick couple of months fun project stalled 2 years ago…..too much procrastinating….its just a wagon lol. We all hit walls, but great to see the forward momentum is back
I’m hoping that’s the case, a huge step forward. I did think we hadn’t seen the finished wagon project! Too busy building model railways more like 😂. Hope all is well down under. All the best, Matt 👍
Hi Matt great to see all the work you have done you should be very proud. I was a little worried that something happened to you. Doe not apologise it takes time to build.
Get a pallet box plastic liner (large plastic bag) and a bag of rice and keep your loco in the bag with the rice. Just an idea for you, I don't know if it would work, but you could do it for new parts at least.
Not a bad idea. Lad down at club once he’s sand blasted a part put them in sealed bags until he paints them and they never rust, good idea especially for the smaller parts. Don’t think I’d get the frames in one 😂. All the best, Matt 👍
Well worth spending the time to paint the chassis properly. Worth drilling those odd holes while you’re at it. I’m trying to persuade my brother to strip and paint the chassis of his 3 1/2” loco coz it’s gone rusty…. Big job, even on a small loco!
Thanks Mark, yeah definitely get him to paint it if it’s gone rusty!! Once the loco is in service and has a good smear of oil all over it will be well protected 😂. I just need to get there! All the best, Matt 👍
Hello Matt, I can't smash the like button hard enough. I really enjoy your journey. I'm always up for a sanding and painting hobby because it's a part of the building process. Even though a sanding and painting video won't be the best performing video, but you have to do it anyway and it keeps us up to date. Anyway, your progress looks amazing and it was really worth doing! Greetings from Germany!
Hello, thank you for the support, it is really appreciated! I actually hate the painting process, hence when the body is done, I have someone lined up to do it!! So I may film him doing it 😂😂. Long road to go between now and then though. All the best, Matt 👍
I've been using Jenolite "Waxoil Spray" for a few months, It's a spray wax that forms a barrier against moisture. So far it's worked well on some tooling and hopefully will prevent rust over winter when everything condensates in my workshop..
I use to use something similar in a job I once had, its the cleaning it off I never liked, my machines get coated in oil when I clean them so I tend not to have much trouble. The period we had was very strange, just went humid over a couple of days. Never had any issue until that point or after. All the best, Matt 👍
We have all done it, you just BIGGER!!! ( I've only got a drill and z Grinder now. I used to make my bits I different places I worked! I built this lot for under £300, over about 20 years. To heavy for me to lift now, (68 years old) so I sold the big wagon (FR No.63) to a lad off the Conway Valley Railway Museum and the loco and small wagon(1/3rd scale FR Conway Castle and wagon 87) to Lawrie Rose of UA-cams LMM (Laurie's Mechanical Marvels) channel. It now lives near Ipswich and getting a well deserved overhaul of my dad's 1965 Suffolk Colt engine and clutch!!! He will look after it forme I'm sure!!!
