    Hello Anna, First I would like to say thank you to your father Pavel and to you for educating me on such matters. I have just started my first beehive thanks to Dr, Leo Sharashkin who is also a native of Russia. The advice given by your father in this video will be one that I use to get my hive up and running a bit faster. Thank You Both!

    Ana and Pavel thanks for another great teaching video. First off thanks for including the date in your video, that is so important to help us relate to the timeframe. Can you also help us by sharing your general location? I am learning so many different philosophical ways of thinking and ways of treating the hive/colony conditions from Pavel. I am amazed at the stark difference in my learning from other beekeepers and classes about today's lesson from Pavel. Having a Queenless hive in this situation during a Nectar Flow is not a "BAD SITUaTION" as I have been taught the you must get a queen in that hive or it is doomed! When in reality like Pavel has taught us today, the bees still know they have a job to do, so they are instinctively building comb and gathering nectar to make into honey. I wonder if they do this in hopes of a swarm moving into the hive at some point and allowing the species to survive in the fate of their family genetic line?
    Finally, for all you haters that give a thumbs down, please comment why . Do you have a different opinion that we can learn from? I call you haters because not one differing or negative comment on this video, but there are fifteen thumbs down at the time of my comment. We have an opportunity to make these better videos if you comment along with your thumb action.

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 років тому +6

      Thank you for your feedback! We are located in SC. The haters... the few times our videos did go very well, we would get like 14 dislikes all at once within a minute or two. I’m wondering if it’s the same person, different accounts. Because I’ve noticed that jump on all of our popular videos! I’m surprised we don’t have more haters lol because a lot of times the way we do things is different than some of the videos online. Yes, we are probably stepping on few toes but we are ok with that. We believe it’s important for people to see how beekeeping is done elsewhere and why we do it a certain way, so they can decide for themselves! I love my dad’s perspective on beekeeping and wouldn’t trade it for nothing else! He makes a lot of sense to me.

    I have been doing this for several seasons now and others questioned why - never really thought about it except to say that I was helping the bees more efficiently build out their frames. Your dad presented it well - and why he does it. It’s very intuitive. I even had people tell me not to do this but it always ended well for me.

    So, is he saying that he removed the queen so that they bees would make more honey? Would he then after reintroduce a new queen?
    Thanks for the videos from a new subscriber!!!

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 років тому +5

      If you remove a queen the hive starts developing queen cells and a new queen should come out and mate. This process takes about 25 days. So during this period, they are gathering a lot of honey! We took this queen to save another hive that failed to develop their own queen. Hope this helps! If they fail to develop a queen, yes, only then we reintroduce a new queen. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! :) We also have a video called "Caging Queen" in that video we purposely leave the queen in a cage, the bees sense that their queen cannot lay eggs and start making queen cells to develop another queen. This way the bees are gathering honey for about 25 days instead of using the resources for brood, after about 23-25 days we take the caged queen out. This way we have an extra queen to make a split or to save another family, or to sell her. Or we leave two queens in one hive but divide them with a queen excluder. Leaving two queens like that strengthens the hive, and the bees bring more honey.

      @@AnnaKra my brother (new beekeeper) and a friend (veteran beekeeper) have been experimenting with this also with explosive results! It is working extremely well and also in different hive styles. Long hives seem to actually work better with this method I guess. One very bad thing people do in our harsh climate is they get warmer climate bees and don't give them time to adapt. They feed the bees "protein patties" during winter to "save" them and end up killing the entire hive because the queen makes more bees when they should be concentrating on surviving the winter on what honey they have left. Many don't survive the winter because of that and the cycle continues. He and his friend are trying to make new "hybrid" queens that have mated with wild bees and survived at least a winter or two. They will then begin repedative splits to make new queens and distribute them in our area to save the population in our area. The next thing will be to get people to stop using the patties and only use sugar water if necessary. So far they have made huge progress!! Fingers crossed. Sorry if I didn't explain things perfectly, I'm not a beekeeper myself I just listen. Lol 🤣.

    So in summary:
    1: bees make honey in sequence frame by frame, they will be happy with one or 2 frames and stop making honey. So when hey make two frames, put an empty frame in between. they will instinctively fill it to maintain hive structure.
    2: no queen, sometimes the queen dies and a new one isn't born yet, or sometimes they reject the queen. they will focus on making honey during this time rather than feeding offspring.
    question: how long can a hive go without a queen?

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 років тому +2

      It’s not recommended to have a queen-less hive for more than 25 days. After that the colony weakens and start making more drones. If there is a lot of nectar outside you can purposely take the queen out and save another family or sell it or make a split... in that period they will focus on bringing more honey for about 25 days before the new queen can start laying eggs. We have a video on our channel called “caging queen” where we purposely cage the queen so they start making their own queen for the purpose of gaining more honey in spring. This is best done when there is a lot of nectar flow. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
