    I live in the Deep South on the Gulf Coast bear the coastline and these trees are everywhere!!! Not quite this massive but yet they are huge and old !!! I do love how their limbs reach out and touch the ground. We have 4 on our property and I love to watch the kids sit on them and climb them. These trees are like family it’s humbling to sit on the porch and look at them and see the kids swing or climb or just lay down on one of the limbs and read a book and think how old they are and how small we are in time and physically and to think what all these trees have seen and endured over centuries!!! I even named them lol. Old Man and Granny and Big Momma and Little Man. We have owls living in one and many bird houses and squirrels in them. These trees are different then others and again just have the feel of living breathing creatures. Until you actually see one and spend time around them you will never know the feeling. We are near a civil war battle field and near one of the oldest cities in the country and to think over the central who has caped here or stopped and walked around under these trees. These century oaks or red oaks are amazing.... if we lost one it would hurt us a lot.

    I had no idea that oak trees grew that way. The branches are so heavy that they drag on the ground. Thank God that somone didn't decide at some point maybe back in the 1800s to cut that tree down for lumber. It's a work of art of nature.

      Not all oaks will do that, this is a Live oak tree, and they are rare in that they will do that. Eastern White oak may do something like that also.

    We had Live Oak to loosen roots during Hugo. Next hurricane, it completely uprooted. That Live Oak was around 500 years old, and it was not near as big as Angel Oak. It impossible know the true age of Live Oak. They suffer core rot making futile to counting growth rings.

    This tree may have actually witnessed Sherman & his 60,000 strong army march through the south on toward Charleston. I'd be willing to bet this old tree has many a musket ball buried deep in it's trunk as there were many skirmishes throughout that area during the Revolutionary & Civil War.
    Yep,, the stories that grand old tree could tell would have many a historian stooping at it's branches on bended ear to accurately record the days gone by..

    Is it dead? It doesn't seem like there's any leaves on it compared to the trees around it???

    • @Introvertedtravel
      @Introvertedtravel  6 років тому +1

      No, the trees you are seeing around are the branches and leaves of this one tree. You really should see it for yourself, it's pretty amazing.

    That really is a tree straight out of LOTR. Or any of those ancient forests of fairy tales. Amazing. Imagine an entire forest of those. Btw, are you allowed to climb it or no? I bet they have signs saying not to.

    • @Introvertedtravel
      @Introvertedtravel  6 років тому

      You definitely can not sit on them lol. They do have signs saying so. They even have minders out there yelling to not sit on the tree.

    I'm so glad they didn't cut that big beautiful tree down that tree has old stories to tell that no one would believe and it will have more stories to tell the 60 70s and 80s are all gone and the 50s and the 40's that tree is so beautiful it's got to be over 500 years old wouldn't you like to know some of the stories I know I would if that tree could talk it would change a lot of things for a lot of people and scare the hell out of everybody probably. keep on growing beautiful tree your time is not even close to being up👌👏👏❤❤

    why bigger brances on one side of the tree and not the other side

    • @Introvertedtravel
      @Introvertedtravel  7 років тому +2

      It's been explained to me two ways. 1. that's just the way the trees grow here. I have two angel oaks on my property and they grow the same way. 2. the trees lean and spread their branches in the direction of greatest sun/where the sun lasts the longest. I have heard people say they can use these trees like stars because they grow with an eastward slant, the heavier side of the tree being where the branches grow out the furthest to get the most sun.

  • @Cosmic_Chronicles_
    @Cosmic_Chronicles_ 5 років тому

    If I climb really high and there's sun its like the best part of day

    I wonder if there's a ranger or a guardian on constant duty to keep the public from carving initials & the sort into the tree. To keep folk from defacing the tree. You know how people can be.

    My daughter lives here in Tennessee. Shes just looked it up for me. But wanting to come by n see it , almost everybody else saying 500 yrs old. So iis it true they are saying each branch represents where they hung a slave? You hear diff things

    • @Introvertedtravel
      @Introvertedtravel  6 років тому

      Superstitions aboud when it comes to this tree. What is true is hard to parse. Did they hang people from it? Probably. Was it just for slaves? I doubt it. As far as the age goes, all the informarion at the site says 500 yrs old so that is what I went with.
