  • Hi, I'm Tim and welcome back to Forgotten Ghibli. In this episode we take a look at an overlooked, forgotten, yet beautiful and whimsical love letter to the very pursuit of passion and creativity - Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart (1995).
An exquisitely crafted film directed by the relatively unknown Yoshifumi Kondo. Whisper of the Heart is exceptional in its realistic, relatable, and charming depiction of young teenage middle schooler Shizuku Tsukishima.
Kondo was highly regarded within Studio Ghibli. Both Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki were looking to him to take over as successor to the Ghibli empire, unfortunately this would never come to pass.
In this episode we dive into the background and history of the film and its director, as well as what makes it special to many. So please, join me on this journey as we find out what the late Kondo had to offer in his greatly overlooked masterpiece.
Be sure to check out the other chapters of Forgotten Ghibli (including Only Yesterday):

This movie just always feels so raw and so real, so grounded, that I'm moved to tears at anyone just appreciating it and giving me another way to experience it. Thank you for this video.

Thank you as well. Honestly, there can be so much negativity and hurt in UA-cam comments, at times it can be hard to stay positive. So when I hear from people like you who are genuinely compassionate and heartfelt - it goes a long way in making it all feel worthwhile. So thank you for sharing your thoughts, it is much appreciated.
It truly is a beautiful film that deserves more recognition. Wishing you the best!

This is my favorite Ghibli film, hands down. I love so many of them (and I own multiple copies of the Nausicaa manga) but I fell in love with this film when I first saw it in college. It's just so sweet, honest, and funny.

I'll also throw out the other film that I saw around the same time and holds a similar spot in my memory; It's live action nor anime, but Shunji Iawai's Love Letter is similarly raw, honest, and sweet, but with a core of loss in its story.

i watched this movie again the other day, and I never realized how well planned out the entire film was. rom an outside view it seems like a cute story about teenagers falling in love, but it emerged such a deep side of me, great video man, this is exactly what I needed.

"Like Totoro, but without Totoro" is a perfect label for this film. A superb blend of the real and surreal; it is a testament to artistic pursuit itself and always reminds me of what's important for my own creativity.
I love the musical journey you took us through in this video. It's tragic what happened to Kondo and I think it rang a mortal bell in Miyazaki's mind (though he has tried and failed to step away from animation many times since).
Thank you for this moving, insightful and elegiac view into a true hidden gem from Ghibli.

Yes absolutely, a very lovely film that deeply resonates within the creative souls of many. Glad you enjoyed the video!
The tragedy of Kondo will always remain one of animation's greatest "what if" questions...

Thank you for posting this and bringing it to my attention. It seems to be just what I needed at this time, as it has resonated well with a lot of thoughts that I have been pondering lately. I had never heard of the Japanese word "Fushigi" before, but immediately realized that I have had a phrase going through my mind quite often that seems to be my version of it. It came to me as a simple way to define what Mysticism is: "There is something deeply profound about ordinary things, if we would just look." Too often we are overcome by what I think of as "weapons of mass distrAction". Things like unconscious consumerism, self-avoidant behaviour, misplaced aggression, substitute gratification, and they keep us from discovering that unpolished precious stone within us that this story talks about.

Well said! So much of our lives comes down to what we choose to ignore and what we choose to focus on. It's easy to grasp this concept, yet difficult to practice remaining in the present - especially in this modern age of constant noise and social media.
However you found your way to this video, I am grateful you did. A pleasure to meet you and hear your thoughts. Cheers!

i've watched a lot of ghibli movies but i don't think i've even heard of this one, it sounds lovely so i'll definitely be checking it out! thanks for doing what you do, your videos are always so interesting & calming :)
also, kind of off-topic but the expression 不思議 can be read in chinese as well, though it usually adds a 可 in the middle (so it's 不可思議: cannot/should not + imagine/conceive = unfathomable) which carries a pretty similar but still like, notably different sentiment to the wonderful/mysterious vibe that the japanese phrase has. it's always fun to see how idioms take on different meanings when they move from one language/culture to another

    • @TimThoughts
      @TimThoughts  Рік тому +1

Wow so interesting! I too am fascinated by language and love learning about how different words diffuse meaning across different cultures. Especially Japanese/Chinese since obviously Kanji originates from China. Really appreciate the insight - would have never known otherwise 🙂
Also thanks for the kind words!

@@TimThoughts I'm really interesting in your episode of Ghibli's Forgotten, a well edit, smooth music and enjoyable, relaxing video you made. I've been watching this " Forgotten Ghibli of Whisper of the heart " 2-3 times because it was beautiful my guy. I hope you could do another " Forgotten Ghibli " which I recommend it's Nausicaa of the valley of the wind one of my favorite Ghibli to watch but you needn't to take my advices.
