a day trip to nikko - ancient temples and shrines, countryside vibes & eats | japan travel vlog
Hi all, welcome back to Tim in Japan!
In this Japan travel vlog we take a day trip from Tokyo via shinkansen to the sleepy countryside town of Nikko. Home to the UNESCO world heritage site of Toshogu Shrine, Nikko is a truly majestic place to visit.

I take you on a tour of these legendary structures, admiring the architecture and providing some fun travel tips along the way. Yomeimon gate is a must see - the most intricately detailed and ornate structure in all of Japan.
After checking out all the shrines and temples, we head into town to grab some local food. Nikko is famous for yuba (tofu skin), with a bunch of other local specialty shops.
We found some great egg tarts at Nikko Tart-ya, one of the best croquettes I've ever had, and some fresh grilled fish on a stick, like straight out of an anime.
To top it all off we grab some yuba soba at a local restaurant named Azuma. I also tried the deep fried yuba, which was great!
Heading back to Tokyo, we stop in at a Japanese McDonalds for a late night bite to eat. The bacon potato pie and jaga butter shaka shaka fries were particularly good, as well as the peach frappe.

Your analysis of this beautiful film is as beautiful as the film. For that, I’ve subscribed. Great analysis, on a lovely film! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video essay. Watching Perfect Days in early 2024 was such a life-changing experience for me. An extremely touching film, so subtle and "zen", that made me appreciate each passing second more, without having to worry about the next.
I'm japanese and using your video to study english! Big thanks to you and your great videos😊
What a wonderful thoughts Tim
What a beautiful video 🙂
I just watched the perfect days last night, today I found your video randomly while i was looking for something calming. Bro i loved the way you present yourself and your talk about the movie. Just subscribed. Hope ppl like you earn more mony from UA-cam for creating such a good content. Love from an Iranian living in Frankfurt ✌️

Thank you for introducing me to this artwork. :)
thank you for making this video. Perfect Days was my favorite movie of 2023.
Same here!
never watched this movie, but i enjoy your thoughts on it. as i get older, the more i want to lose my self in every moment. now i gotta watch it
thanks! definitely give it a look when you have a chance
Chiikawa is inside Bloodborne.
It's a gentle, detailed story. A view on a simple life that has an unspoken back story. Wonderful actors and a calm meditative atmosphere. But it is really a beautiful short film stretched far too long. Easily this is a half hour film and doesn't warrant the time it took
Thank you for this video it made me very happy have a nice day
@@flogoro Same to you! 🙂
And there are those who say, suppose LeGuin was equating Omelas with Heaven, and the suffering child is the Son of God?
I am from Inida ...no words I am going to wacth again this is like a life guide
My boyfriend and I could go to a Chiikawa official Nagano pop up store with plenty of limited Chiikawa merchandising when we visited Seoul last month. We were really excited! We have known these cute characters when we visited Osaka last year and fell in love! We will travel to Tokyo next April and hope to find stores with plenty of chiikawa products ❤❤ Maybe Kiddy Land.
@@gizou2707 That's awesome! I know Korea has some limited chiikawa merch that's only sold there, so it's really cool you could visit! Hope you have a great trip to Japan next year, can never have too much chiikawa stuff! ♥️
@@TimThoughts thanks we love Japan, that will be our 4th trip there. Yes in Korea we could get some limited chiikawa magnets featuring Korean food ☺️
Dude, amazing video essay, subbed, can you possibly discuss practical CQC and stunts in films, (like Atomic Blonde, The Raid Films, John Wick, Mission impossible), and how seeing these dedicated actors and stunt people actually doing the stunts, make a difference compared to a film like Taken 3,where there's at least 15 cuts for a fence jump? 🙏🏾💯
@@NerdyGamerReacts Thanks! And really interesting idea, I'll have to keep it in mind! Cheers! 🍻
I think you captured it well. I think its an artistic portrayal of persons as trees. His care for the sapplings. His care for his niece and his young coworker. Cold water at the restaurants and shower to nurture himself like nurturing a tree. His smile as he looks up at the sun, like a tree would. Cleaning toilets like trees clean the polluted air. It's very much rooted in the zen tradition.
@@peacew6 well said
can you reccomend some more films like that?
@@saradindusarma3856 I can't really come up with another film that has the same sort of meditative style, largely free of major conflict. Some of Koreeda's works come to mind, but they're generally centered around family drama. I do know that Wim Wenders (the director) was heavily inspired and influenced by the prolific Japanese director Ozu. I myself am not familiar with Ozu's works, but that may be a good place to look!
My favorite movie of all time, thank you for doing it justice with this video!
@@jaettaylor Hey, glad you enjoyed the video! Your kind words are much appreciated 🙂

Wow for someone who hasn't seen this movie.. its putting tears in my eyes lol. This is also due to the video being so well done!
@@D1sappo1ntmentPanda Thank you! I think if you have a chance, you'll also enjoy the film! 🙂
Beautiful.
To me this film is teaching us to enjoy our boredom. Not to think as boredom as something where you could be doing anything else, but to find happiness, harmony and satisfaction in your routine. Sometimes appreciating your life in boredom and routine is the greatest lesson this movie taught me.
It's an interesting story. One angle I haven't heard is that even if someone were to help the child, would it really be for the child's sake or for the sake of the Savior? Especially if it dooms everyone else in the process. I like thinking about this story
Great video
Great stuff, man! Thank you very much. I subbed after your wonderful video about Perfect Days and very glad to stay. I'm currently trying to learn Japanese (I'm Russian), dreaming about travelling to Japan. Your travel vlogs are an esthetic pleasure to watch (and I'm writing down places to visit). Thanks a lot again! ❤
Thanks so much, really appreciate it! It's awesome you're learning Japanese - it will help tremendously when you get the chance to visit (especially the farther from Tokyo you go). Really though thank you - glad to hear you found the channel and are enjoying the Japan vlogs. They're a pleasure (and sort of meditative) for me to work on, which definitely helps with the longevity of the channel. So all that to say, glad you're enjoying them! 🤝 日本語の勉強頑張ってね!

nikko nikko nii (*˘︶˘*).。.:*
we read this in ap lit and i couldnt stop thinking about it. the ending is so profound to me. I always interpreted the ‘darkness’ as resistance. albeit, it is not a form of radical resistance, the people who walk away from omelas are no longer conforming with the ‘blissful ignorance’ that supports omelas (utopia). they walk into the unknown because the unknown is a far more better option rather than sitting around knowing a child is suffering for your happiness.
perfect video.
Chiikawa characters are so cute I'm so obsessed that I bought a lot of merch <3
yesss can never have enough chiikawa! 😄

Man it was good, not only the movie but also this video. I gotta say everything about life is so beautiful. Even though we have hard times we still can find joy from anything. I think that we go through each day just to get to the end of the week-me included- but this video and the movie helped me realize that every day is beautiful. It's a little journey each day and stepping back and appreciating it can go a long way.
@@coolestmanman Well said, gotta agree with you there. Sometimes all we really need to do is take a step back and slow down to appreciate the life around us. Cheers! 🍻
Chiikawa is too realistic in Japan. The harsh work enviroment
Dear brother, thanks from the bottom of heart for this beautiful video ❤
@@vishnu17o8 Thanks to you as well ♥
The part where he cries really gets to me because you can make the mistake of thinking that he knows everything and has found a perfect way to live perfect days but that would lead to a disconnection with life because life is also pain so he accesses his feelings at that moment, he sleeps badly, but the next day he wakes up and tries to look at the sky like he always does. reminds me of what I once read in a book "pain passes because pain passes". he's so connected with him... when his niece arrives you see him laughing, really laughing and the love of others is very important, yes it's beautiful to see her taking an interest in his books and talking about the camera he gave her,.. he has so much love in him for life that life has for him back and that's enough
@@mariaeduardamoreira3698 Beautifully said, thank you for sharing 🙂
I was on a trip to Japan when met chiikawa and I brought home everything I could related to chiikawa. The silliness, the struggles and sometimes easy going of this cute little thing makes me smile tbh.

Tim, Happy Birthday and keep on being your great self! For anyone who doesn't know, Tim pours his heart and soul into his creative work for our benefit and UA-cam is a worse place without him and his art. This is the only channel that I want notifications for because as far as I'm concerned, I do not continue to UA-cam until I have seen Tim's latest work. Subscribe if you haven't, sit down with your favourite snack, and enter that calm thoughtful space. With that out of the way, thank you for this honest and cosy video. It seems like life has been set to 'Punishing' lately and we're all doing our shifts in the sh*t factory. But that makes reaching out to friends even better! Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional, and connecting with friends can avoid suffering and ease the pain. :) (That said, learning that your Whisper of the Heart video was struck down reeeeeallly hurt. That is one of my favourite videos of yours Tim and I'm so sorry it was hit. Corpos need to learn that videos of praise like that are essentially free marketing for them! I want to see Yuru Camp after watching your video on that - another tragic casualty D: ) Lastly, I'm very excited for your European debut! I have a bunch of recommendations for Rome I'll be sure to collect and pass along to you :) You'll have a great time I'm sure!
Thanks as always, Sam! (and an extra thanks for the glowing endorsement :) The recent spat of copyright issues is indeed unfortunate, but all we can do is move forward from here. Always grateful to have amazing people such as yourself here to support the channel.
