Where have they moved jimmy buffets margaritaville to ?
According to the onsite security guard, the newer late 1990s Cockle Bay Wharf development at the western edge of the bay, which contains Home The Venue, will also be totally demolished and redeveloped as well, with the DA for this being granted long ago.
It's sad to see! That sandstone wall and cyren sign was the first job I did when I did my signwriting apprenticeship
Say what you will about Harbourside, but I don’t feel like Sydney has any respect for itself, there will be no heritage from the 60’s onwards given how everything gets torn down.
Thanks for capturing these places Phil!
Too true.
Thank you so much for this video. On December 28th, 2022 I went to Darling Harbour with my family to visit the aquarium and my kids begged us to ride the ferris wheel. I'm so glad that I gave in, because I had no idea that it would be removed so soon after. It was actually a little emotional to watch this video.
So many memories there as a kid and also as an adult with my own kids. Why do we always have to ruin everything.
Same here. Pretty sad really and so much wastage.
I was there in September and was gobsmacked how run down it was compared to when i was last there in 2014. Was even better back in 2007 when the monorail was still going.
Great video. For the last 12 years I serviced and maintained the escalators in Harbourside and it is sad to see it's decline particularly over the last 3 years. I last went into Harbourside on December 8th the day before it closed for good, and it was quite a somber experience.
Harbourside and Darling Harbour generally was a bi-centenary project. It was a disused rail yard until 1984 when they decided to clean it up in time for 1988. Apart from events at the former Exhibition Centre and Sydney Entertainment Centre, the precinct was a white elephant. Not too dissimilar to Homebush after the 2000 Olympics, but still fun for kids playing in the water fountains or Tumbalong Park. At the time it was conceived, they realised it was cut off from the rest of the CBD without a long hike up hill, which is why they built the Monorail. After the hubris of 1988 the area quickly became touristy hence the duty-free style shops at Harbourside. Dated and tacky, yet we all still hold fond memories :)
I remember the old railway years and Darling harbor was a vast improvement but done on the fly but what they have planned is 40 stories high and will over shadow the whole area.
**Bicentennary** Yes, the Darling Harbour precinct is truly a product of the 1980s. The old building has long been obsolete.
According to the onsite security guard, the newer late 1990s Cockle Bay Wharf development at the western edge of the bay, which contains Home The Venue, will also be totally demolished and redeveloped as well, with the DA for this being granted long ago.
Sydney Olympic Park is an out and out white elephant. It is always eerie wandering down Olympic Boulevard during a weekday.

Thats crazy. When I lived in Sydney about 15 years ago that place was absolutely hopping.
I honestly don't see the appeal of Sydney CBD anymore. It's just becoming overwhelmingly offices and apartments. The only jobs that can exist here would just be desk jobs that can almost certainly be entirely remote. And with other amenity relatively dwindling, it just doesn't feel like there's much in the way of much else. e.g. the fact they want to move the powerhouse museum away from its namesake site to somewhere completely arbitrary in Parramatta is just ridiculous. They killed much of the nightlife spots (Kings Cross etc). You need a variety of stuff to keep the place interesting and relevant for locals, visitors and tourists alike .. but nope, just a box to sit in during the day, and another box to sleep in at night. Meh.
There is much more shopping and things to do in the CBD than there was back in the 70s and early 80s. Back then the waterfront areas of Darling Harbour were railway yards and docks. There weren't many shopping arcades. The QVB was so underutilised and rundown it was in danger of being demolished as an eyesore. Even the subject of this video has changed quite a bit since it opened. There was open space under that large glass and steel arch. Not to mention the air, particularly on George St, being much cleaner these days.
The 70’s to mid 90’s was the best time to spend a day in the city- I remember every school my mom would take us to the powerhouse or aquarium - on one bus And one train from parramatta - now ……. The timetable and route looks like one of the maze runner movies 😱😱🫣
@@gabriellehabib5645 Although the Powerhouse and aquarium didn't exist in the 70s/early80s. A lot of stuff was built for the bicentenary in 1988. You still only need one train from Parramatta to the CBD. If you came by car along Victoria Rd in the 70s, you had to go over the old Glebe Island and Pyrmont Bridges. Sydney's traffic isn't always fantastic these days, but considering the much smaller population back then, it was pretty bad in those days too. What was called "rat runs" (alternate routes using local roads) was quite the thing.
You make a very good point. And with rents the way they are, retail and hospitality workers can hardly afford to live in the CBD, so then the remaining shops & cafes have staffing issues. People on minimum wage don’t want to travel an hour or more each way for a 4 hour shift.
Lucky you don't live over here in Bland Perth. I've just come back from a 5 day stay in Syd. Lived there from 96 to 06 when the nightlife was unreal! Now you be lucky to get a drink after 10 pm.. ridiculous! Thought Perth was a nanny state, Syd the same now. Glad I enjoyed it when it had a pulse! I do love the old buildings though, compared to fly in fly out.. mines wank fluoro tops blah blah!
Anyone I meet here who works in the mines bores me to death! Would rather chat with a kangaroo!
Shame on Mirvac. Commercial office space and apartments do not belong on this site. It goes against what Darling Harbour stands for (Leisure and recreation).
It's sad they are demolishing places that were only opened during the 1980s.
Yes, many of us saw both the grand opening, and the closure of the entertainment centre…..
This site to me isn't abandoned, because it has an earmarked future. All new developments require that the old one become empty. Abandoned to me is shut down with no plans at all. Still, fascinating to watch, you're grabbing some worthwhile history here.
I imagine it's extremely difficult to be an urbex'er in Aus, especially the cities. We're not transitory like the Americans are. Almost nowhere is truly abandoned, almost any place gets repurposed in some way or redeveloped before too long. Any property is going to be worth high $$ thanks to our stupid property market, so there's always an owner somewhere who either has a plan themselves or is looking to sell to someone else who does.
Thanks for the video. It is a shame they are demolishing it. Also a pity the Monorail isn't heritage listed as it was such an iconic Sydney thing that no other capital city had. Hopefully, something great can rise from the ashes of Darling Harbourside.
harbourside was a horrible shopping center after the 2000 Olympics super tacky super expensive, but so many memories of it because it was easy and cheap parking to place like sega world and all the motorshows which occurred in sydney. its like my childhood is going.
The queen Elizabeth would be rolling in her grave thinking “why did I travel all that way for those wankers to just tear it down “😂😂😂😢
Pity nobody is interested in her thoughts, even in her much-loved Commonwealth.
got to admit I like the look of all the greenland and park area they are replacing it with. I think it will be better. Always thought DH and Harbourside looked tacky
Ummm...they are building high rise apartments there...
Yeah - the design I think they're going with looks good to me. Yes, there's a big ol' tower there, but it's set back a fair bit and there's not sudden cliff of glass like you see with something like the Ribbon, which crowds the waterfront in my opinion. In fact in this redevelopment, the walking area next to the water will be widened and a lot of the area that is now just rooftop will become walkable. Also there's to be a metro station opening in Pyrmont in 2030, so now is the right time to be thinking about residential density in this area.
Still, it's weird to think what was meant to be a lasting legacy from the bicentennial is just about gone after 30 years.
@@walterwhite5738 yes but there will be much more parkland around the structure
I am going to miss the Sydney Harbourside shopping centre RIP
Gosh. It just feels like such a waste of resources to tear everything down. Hubby and I had a lovely lunch at Cyren just after we came out of lockdown back in April 2021. We went to the Maritime Museum then had lunch at Cyren using our vouchers. We had been there before and always enjoyed the atmosphere. I hope whatever goes in there maintains that feel.
yeah well you never went again so it's gone. Thanks for the support
Sucks to see this place go. When I saw that they'd taken out the fudge place, I could feel it was the end
yes they sent fudge packing.
Thanks heaps for the progress updates. I've been too busy working so I haven't been able to get into the city to document it myself. Keep em coming!
They must find some crazy stuff hidden in nooks and crannys on these demolition sites.
Fair sized footprint for whatever is set to replace it, bit under 17,000 square metres according to the six maps area tool
Thank you for the update.
I've heard it's apartments and a shopping centre under. Who knows though.
It's just going to be one long construction area is Darling Harbour. The current development starting on the shopping centre site is then to be followed by Cocklebay Wharfe. And that site is just to be yet another willy waving glass box!
Mad inside look
I love your video's always informative, I remember going to this place as a kid and teen, I feel like a part of my childhood is now gone forever along side Saga World and the Monorail among other places. I also always thought that the remaining dome Monorail stations would make an amazing unique bar. Odd question but does anyone remember what band filmed a music video on the glass archway platform at Harbourside Shopping Centre in the late 90's or early 2000's. Also did anyone document the lose of the Sirius building Sydney aka the building that you'd see from the Harbor Bridge that had the J Saves sign from the top apartment window can't find any videos about it.
I liked the monorail easiest way to get there from the city center.. last time we went was to Crinitis for my sons lunch dinner now we will go to the bBrighton le sands one.. They really need something to not only attract tourists but something for locals also.. it use to be a fun place to go..
Nooooooooooooooooooo! 😢😢😢😢 I remember when they took down the Cockle Bay Bar where some of the Buskers (Juggling Street Performers) used to hang out... I was always down there every wknd just to hang out w/ them until most of them left to go back home). R.i.P to the mall.
Are they recycling anything, i'm sure there would be a lot of places that could use the aircons.
20 years ago Sydney was at its peak ive watched it slowly wind every thing back and kill it off !!
like Harbourside i am gutted ...on a bright note the Sydney views at the end were stunning ,,i know you were just walking around but what you caught was stunning ..more like that please ..just face the camera and walk
I think originally the new W building along with the new imax was supposed to be completed and opened before demolition but didn’t happen due to covid and builder disputes
2 builders went bust - Grocon and ProBuild (at least the local branch, they are South African).
Darling Harbour is so strange now. An abandoned area with lots of development peppered with pockets of progress. It’s going to take some years to recover
Queen Elizabeth II stood on the upper level in the middle when it opened, 1988, what a piece of history now gone..
Havnt been there in years Is,Tumbalong park still there? in fact i think the last time i was there was for the Ritmo festivle and used to go to I Max as well
The park is there, although it has had some work done on it. Still has grass to sit on, if that's what you want.
Gentrification with greedy developers
What a waste of money, why is this happened.what are they building next😢
They will be building a new apartment complex with the shopping center on the bottom floor
It couldn't happen to a more deserving pile. BRING. IT. ON.
A lot of shopping centres should get demolished just like this one. Bring back busy main streets, and public squares, in local town centres. Moreover the shopping Center isn't a good public space, you can't just relax at a cafe for an extended period of time. It's an in closed cacophony of noise and people you just want to get away from. Another thing is that rents are too high for some small businesses thanks to the high cost of construction, maintenance, and other ammenities. A shopping Center doesn't have an organic mix of old and new buildings, and high or low rent locations. Neither are a lot of these places built in the heart of walkable neighbourhoods. You need a car to traverse the gigantic car parks.
Europeans have better urban places, we could learn something from them..
An interesting perspective. I agree with a lot of your points.
It will 100% be a better shopping centre if they demolish a mall like that
Omg! Part of my 20yrs has died!!
I wonder if they're going to get rid of that hideous 80's style paving that's everywhere? I hope they do.
Nice Phil! Are u going on f1 to loftus
what are they replacing harbourside with?
This is Very, Very Sad to see :'-(
It's sad when your favorite place has to go
what was hard rock cafe? a heavy metal night club or something?
😂
rock refers to cocaine
Basically a celebrity themed restaurant usually with memorabilia plastered everywhere
Cyren was open until 9th jan
Hi phil I just wanted to tell you someone was claiming to be you and say I have won money they had the same profile picture as you. I have reported them just wanted to let you know.

I AM going to watch the vlog but not going to like it ..was hoping to go back there next time i visit sydney
this place has being struggling for years, so dont see why its the governments fault lol
It’ll be gone by then😀
How sad
Great memories
They should keep the monorail 🚝 dock
Sad to demolish it all it’s part of our history.
