They say Clannad is the most romantic anime but I have to disagree. Even though Fushigi Yuugi is shojo, it totally deserves to be recommended as a romance anime!
The First series naturally, there wasn't much development from their romance, especially Nagisa's side. Hate to break it to you but calling Clannad the most romantic anime is giving it way too much credit. Sure, I will admit that it would rank as a top family anime but for romance, at best it would just be an honorable mention. That's not to say Fushigi Yuugi is the most romantic but that anime gave me a lot of feels as a romance anime and Tomoya and Nagisa as a couple didn't do it for me. They don't even kiss. I have watched four top ten anime couple videos and Tomoya and Nagisa never made the top in any of them. I like my romance having a couple not only lovey dovey but also well developed too. Sorry but Clannad is not that romantic.

Godai and Kyoko from Maison Ikkoku also get married but Clannad fans apparently love to ignore the fact that their favorite anime is not the only romance anime there is. I bet you three bags of popcorn that are far more romantic anime couples than those two will ever be, a kiss scene actually does add something to the romance genre period like the kiss scene between Jaune and Pyrrha from RWBY Vol. 3 (which not really romance but...), that scene was tragic yet beautiful. If you haven't seen RWBY, I would suggest you do. I just get sick of Clannad fanatics declaring it to be the best anime period. Yes it is a good anime, but it tends to be overrated. Tomoya and Nagisa's romance never really moved me like Jaune and Pyrrha did. I think Tomoya had much better chemistry with Tomoyo and Kyou. Sorry but a good romance anime should have both emotional and sexual chemistry between the main leads and their beta couples. Also some angst too which is something that Tomoya and Nagisa definitely lack, especially when you consider they are the first romantic partners for each other and you'd think there'd be something that's bound to raise some insecurities to their relationship. It's amazing to think they even married each other but most real life romantic relationships aren't like that. Couples have days when they'll need a break from each other and sometimes won't even want to breath the same air. But a strong relationship isn't just about support, it's also about having those days and still wanting to be with each other. I'm sure there are plenty of anime couples, including the ones in shoujo that support each other just as much but they never get noticed.
Loved this anime so much, it's been 20 years since i first fall inlove with this anime, been printing pictures of tamahome and miaka and the 7 warriors and made an album.. And now I'm married and a mother of 2 and I'm watchig it all over again from fushigi yuugi, ova1 2 and 3..
lol I know it's just anime and Miaka is a young girl and all that, but I don't really hate on Tama - and nor should anyone. Just imagine if someone you hardly knew told you, out of the blue, they loved you. I doubt you would jump for joy and accept. My older sister is ten years my senior and spurned my interest in anime and manga when she was a teen in high school (putting me in grades K,1,2,3,4)... ...We used to buy (and then subsequently return/exchange for next episodes) VHS tapes of Fushigi Yuugi and Ranma 1/2 to "Suncoast Motion Pictures" at the mall every few days. xD Even more hilarious than us scamming those poor guys for the love if anime is that half of that sentence doesn't even compute to people born after 1995-ish.

Good God, I found this anime when I was in 6th grade so about 7 years ago. Nuriko and Tasuki have become two of my favorite characters out of all the anime I've watched. That noise that Nuriko's voice actor makes right before they flip out and go, "HOW IRRITATING!!" cracks me up still to this day. Yu Watase knocked this anime out of the park if you ask me.

The marks only appear when the warriors are helping the priestess, like when Tamahome is saving Miaka, his mark appears on his forehead, but every other time, it's not there. :)
Yeah, I know Miaka is trying to be a good best friend, but she always needs her guyfriends and Tamahome to save her. She's the typical damsel-in-distress that tries to be tough. And, she's selfish, because she thought mainly about being with Tamahome rather than rescuing Yui. Yui was just her second reason to coming back to the Book of the Celestial Gods. Tamahome was her primary objective for returning.

As romantic stories go, they're both pretty terrible. FY is comparable to Romeo and Juliet at best, and Clannad is just plain awful.
