  • Filmed at the 59th Fellsman event in April 2023.
The Fellsman is a high-level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well-defined footpaths, so the entrants’ navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness. Because of this, only fit and experienced walkers or runners should enter.

Oh FFS why did I watch this? I've done the 3 Peaks 4 times and got my first 50 miler planned later this year. Now I'm already thinking about doing this! My wife will not be impressed. :D

Lovely video. Thank you. And an extra 'thank you' for making the music pleasant and unobtrusive.

That brought back memories for me too. I first entered in the early 80's wearing Nike Pegasus trainers & Ron Hill tracky bottoms. No Goretex either, just a clammy Peter Storm 'waterproof'. Navigation across Fleet Moss was by an old bike torch which took those flat batteries which seemed to last for just a couple of hours. My last attempt was sometime in the 90's when I was teamed up at Stonehouse for the overnight section with a guy who 67. A Rotherham Harriers member, I think. He was tough! I was encouraged to do the event, along with other pals from Lichfield Mountaineering Club, through fellow club member Mike Hartley who, at the time, regularly won the race in 11 hours or maybe 12 if the weather was bad. It was Mike that held the Pennine Way record for 30 years until last year when his record finally fell to John Kelly. Happy days & how I wish I could do the Fellsman again, but at 73 with a failing knee that's most unlikely. 😭

Does anyone know of shorter events that can be used as an introduction to this style of navigation event (preferably in the South East). This looks amazing but I’m completely unprepared and want to train up in bitesize chunks

Super video with excellent drone shots catching the dales and its atmospheric conditions! Nice to see a cross-section of people featuring too. Subtle music choices were never intrusive. Enjoyed this.
My dad did it in 1969 and 1970 when there were certainly lots of crack fell-runners at the front-end of the field, many of them BGR alumni - albeit clad in boots and heavy walking gear to satisfy the event rules of the time

Best course out of all ultras, volunteer staff are the super and the food - fantastic! It's so different to all other routes and it is simply better and wilder in every possible way. The feeling of finishing will never get old, It's the one that I'll always be proud of. Oh and the memories of the first crossing of Fleet Moss - super fun!

That brought back a few memories. This is a great course and well organised, but what made it really special was the camaraderie with other participants.

How nice to spot this excellent video. I did it in 1995, our time 15:15 is etched on my memory. I'd agreed with my running partner that we'd walk every uphill and only run the flats and downs, and we were lucky that it was quite a dry year. I do recall getting some sleep at the end, in the hall, and then when we set out home in the car, there were still people hiking, who I thought at the time were the tough ones to be still on their feet at 20 hours plus. One of my best ever running experiences, thanks for bringing the memory back

Excellent. This event deserves more publicity. How about getting a TV crew in to make a race
(I never think if it as a race, scraping through the last checkpoint cutoffs) documentary next year ? Hope to be back next year after 6 years off. Would be nice to hear from some of the event vets too.

Perhaps you're right. I wouldn't want the "amateur feel" (that's a very good thing in my view) of the event to be lost. But I'd quite like to see a full 500 person start and make sure there's enough interest to keep it going. There's certainly a balance to be struck.
