  • Amir H. Fallah’s first solo exhibition in China, titled Mysteries of the Unknown is on view from September 8th to October 15th in Gallery All Shanghai. The exhibited works reflect concerns about significant turning points humanity is facing, especially the long-term impacts in social, political, and environmental realms. Global challenges such as the division of democracy, environmental crises, industrial expansion, frequent wars, and deepening class inequalities will influence the future of humanity and the planet. As a father and a global citizen, the weight of these survival anxieties gives rise to a sense of urgency, prompting him to engage in a dialogue about contemporary conditions and emphasize the importance of the present moment-a critical opportunity to adjust our course and take a necessary step towards global transformation.
The central theme running through the exhibition is the relentless pursuit of the meaning of life within our fleeting existence. Through themes and symbols of navigation and drifting, he conveys a desire for exploration and initiates a journey of introspective self-discovery. Fallah has a strong interest in various visual cultures, and his immigrant experiences have influenced the hybrid visual language in his works. Influences from minimalist painting, meticulous painting, graphic design, retro illustrations, graffiti, skateboarding, and underground music from the American 1960s and 1970s shape his creations and form a part of his personal history. By juxtaposing these elements, he authentically conveys his worldview, aiming to create a visual language that resonates with diverse audiences.
In his portrait works, he deliberately blurs identity features to emphasize aspects of individuals' lives beyond time, geography, and culture. This intentional ambiguity allows him to blend factual and fictional elements, creating portraits with multifaceted identity traits. He sees these masked figures as psychological portraits rather than mere reflections of appearance. Using this approach, he delves into the essence of individuals, exploring complexities beyond their outward appearances.
