  • Well Tom’s cruiser is back from the panel beaters after a quick repair from the hail. Tom has taken this opportunity to build a new tray and canopy for his ute.
In this episode he goes through how to make, square and weld the gram and head board of the tray.

TRAY! Awesome video mate. I’ve just purchased a 1989 75 series cruiser. And I’ve got my pipe bender, welder and cnc plasma machine ready to build a tray. Loving the inspiration and motivation provided by your video.

Didnt realise you could actually tig weld so good tom. Can you please give us, your fans, tips on how to not dip the tungsten, like you did on the very first weld? I believe it was right after you said "i am doing all the welding in this video". Cheers bud

Thanks Michael, I think you’ll actually find that it’s a scratch start tig. Clearly your not aware that this system exists. Thanks for viewing as always & helping support the channel grow. 😁👍🏻

@@BackyardBuilds oh ok. Then why is their pre flow gas and no scratch? Seems to be the nature of a high frequency torch judging from the button and dial on torch. Maybe i missed you open the gas valve.

    Great episode 👌
Just bought my first welder, a unimig viper 185 mig/tig 👌 curious what the best gas is to use on mig welding? Wire for mild steel? Wire speeds, how much gas pressure u need, techniques etc.?
Never welded in my life but keen to learn, been something I've wanted to learn for yrs.
Just looking at doing stuff on cars like exhaust, cages, tubs, like tanks airbox engine bay type stuff, exhaust manifolds, intercooler pipes, things like that.
My first project is to fix my dad's old trailer as it has some rust holes on it and I figured it'd be good practice, it's steel ,I think it's 5mm thick steel rough guess.
2nd is to make a 3 inch exhaust for my vn from dump pipe to tip and I've got to modify the wastegate dump, just mild steel I think being a beginner.
    Thanks can't wait for part 2 👌

Hey mate, sorry for the late reply, We would recommend a 0.8mm wire and an argon mix, at BOC its called Argoshield.

@@BackyardBuilds nah that's ok, thanks for the tips, yeah a mate who builds trailers for a living told me about the argosheild, ended up getting it from Bunnings as it was the most cost effective, 80$ for a size D 👌
Haven't used the damn thing yet though 🙄
Life stuff getting in the way lately, had to do a shed tidy up n got a work bench and some other tools I needed but this weekend is free so gonna get out n have a go, got a heap of old exhausts laying around to cut up and practice on 👌
Thanks again and appreciate it, really enjoying the content, learning heaps from it 👌👍

    • @BackyardBuilds

For the tray perimeter 65x35x2mm & the head board was 75x50x3
