  • If you are in your fifties like us and want to get back into BMX again but aren't sure if you should go with a 24" or a 26" BMX cruiser, hopefully we can help you out. We're out riding the Monzas and compare the two to see who it would be best for. Now there are also the 27.5" and 29" sizes which we did not cover. In the end this is just our opinion and the best bet is for you to see if you can get on some of the different sized bikes to see for yourself which size you prefer. Thanks for watching!

I bought a 24 SE So Cal Flyer last year at about half price online.
I am just under 6' tall, 55 year old female who had the best time of her life in the early 80's .
My first BMX was a Dodsun Surfer BMX, 20" wheel, I raced and learned an number tricks on this bike too. It's nice to own a 'big' BMX and just ride it!
I live in the UK and the place I live is quite hilly so siding a single gear bike is challenging as I am not as fit as I used to be.

None of us are as fit as we used to be so don’t feel bad about that at all! Bernie and I were on our normal ride yesterday and were winded on the last hill we come up to as we sort of finish our ride. SE makes a few bikes with gears if you are looking for something easier to pedal. We’re actually looking at the Killer Quad now for Bernie’s wife. Thank you so much for sharing your comment and for watching!! We appreciate it!!

Another great video. I loved the backstory of how you guys reconnected and got back into BMX in recent years.
I have a 24” Monza with Skyways and a 26” GT Performer. I’m 5’10”, and I have a little more fun on the 24”. But you’re right that it comes down to the riding style. I sort of compare it to my car and my wife’s car. I drive a small little MINI Cooper and my wife drives a minivan. For long distances, vacations, etc. I’d much rather drive the van. For a short trip around town, joy rides, etc. the MINI is the way to go. If I’m going to ride long distances and casual cruising, I’ll prefer my 26”. For shorter rides, or rides at the pump track or single track in the woods, the 24” is my choice. If I had to pick just one size, I’d probably go with the 24”. Also, the 24” Monza with skyways is a couple pounds lighter than the 26” Monza with spoke wheels, so that helps with it feeling a little more agile too.
My skyways don’t make that screeching sound when braking, but the front one jitters a bit when braking. My understanding is that’s fairly common with Skyways, even the 20” ones back in the day. Not sure if you checked already, but the brake pads on your 24” might need to be toed in again to reduce the vibrations that cause the screeching sounds. But yeah, fun video. It’s always fun to follow along with you guys 👍

Kuwahara (I thought I remembered) but then I realized it was a Takara. Then got a MCS (chrome "Spider" frame & fork). Anodized blue rims, crank, fluted twist seat post with Diacomp clamp, Shimano brake, ect. BEFORE those I had the AMF Evil Knievel bike. They got lighter! Lol! The MCS has some good stuff on it. Including the Kashimax seat! Circa 1982 build. ACS hubs, Tioga, Shimano parts ect... And the Haro plate, checkered California Lite pads.... Good old days! Had to swap my original aluminum bars out for some chrome GT bars when the blue aluminum (Powerlite?) broke. Swapped to a Tuff Neck stem when I broke the blue aluminum one too. I built the best ramps in my hood. Sort of like Benny the jet and his PF Flyers. I could ride a wheelie for a quarter mile on decent road. Lol! Need me a new ride so I am watching!

It's funny how Gen X guys are going back to their roots. We did the life thing and now we need to go back staying healthy because guys our age are starting to fade away. So we go back to what we know. No 10 speed road bikes, just a single speed BMX bike is all we need. I wish I can still surf. I get a pounding headache after being in the wash. It could be from all the concussions I got when I was younger. Being old sucks.

I am 52 and rode BMX during the hayday, starting on a cheap AMF BMX, then eventually got a GT Pro ('83 I think). Recently I have been wanting to get back into riding, and was thinking of restoring a 24" Schwinn Pro Stock 3 that was my daughter's years ago. It's actually really cool, it was owned by a Cane Creek employee (I think, I live in Asheville and bought used from a shop), and has Cane Creek headset, rims & hubs, and brakes. Makes me so happy to see that BMX is making (or has made) a comeback, especially with the older Gen X'ers like me. Also happy to see that 24" seems to be a popular size as well!

I am almost 43 and I recently bought a skateboard and began skating again at the local skatepark. After a month of riding safely I realized that my knees cannot tolerate that abuse anymore. Well, I rode a friends 29” bmx and got a good taste of a bike in a park and I decided that bikes are more reward for less risk. I used to do bmx and eventually switched to 26” dirt jumping mountain bikes and was really good at it. Riding that 29er made me realize I need a bike. I remember you changed yours over to blue components as well. I think maybe they could do a limited run each year of a chrome bike with different color components. I think it would be a great marketing tool. (blue, red, green, purple, pink, etc.....) If you like the idea, maybe you could share it with them. I'd be excited to buy one.

Hey Kevin, I did have a call with them after the bike show and I shared that with them as others talked to us at the show about having different color ways on the bikes. They did say that having multiple colors on the bikes is a good idea but for a small company like theirs, having all those colors also costs a lot of money as you'd have to stock up on spare parts as well. Even if they did a limited run, they'd still have to have all of the colored parts in stock in case something happened. I'm with you, I'd love to see other colors on this bike besides the gold and orange but I don't think we'll be seeing that change right now. They did share with me some cool new projects they have coming out soon and while I can't share what they are just yet, it'll excite some people when they do! Maybe this is kind of telling that 24 inches is too small for an adult person, or maybe I am wrong?

Personally I like the 26" better although Bernie did just fine on the 24" when we rode in Texas. We went on like 20 mile rides and he sat most of the way so I don't think the 24 is too small. I know of some guys who still ride the 20" though so I think it all just depends on what you are comfortable with. Are you able to find a bike shop near you and try some out? @@cruisinginthe808 Thanks for getting back to me! I've been trying to find an actual BMX bike, but they won't let you order one to try it out. If you order, you have to buy it with no return policy. They claim BMX is a dead category for them, so they don't accept returns.
I've found two bikes online that I like, but I'm torn between them. One is a 27.5-inch cruiser in a Klunker style, while the other is a 24-inch bike that I can get quickly but can't return. Both bikes are full chromoly; at least the larger one is. Despite having no experience for 38 years (ha ha), I'm eager to get one. I even reached out to Thomas, the founder of Monza here in Stockholm, to inquire about their bikes, but he mentioned they stopped selling in the EU due to lockdowns and increased costs, making bikes over 1000 euros here. He also mentioned a tax reduction in the US for small sellers.
These are the two bikes I found available at a decent price and with quick delivery options: the WethePeople Atlas 24-inch in yellow or white, and the WethePeople Avenger Klunker 27.5-inch. I'm 5'9" but on the heavier side. I'm unsure if all 24-inch bikes have the same seat post height. Would this one be too short for comfortable pedaling?
Really cool Klunker with disc brakes:
      www.wethepeoplebmx.de/bikes/avenger
and this one seems really nice in yellow:
      www.wethepeoplebmx.de/bikes/atlas
Now that I've sold off all my other bikes, I'm relying on this one to zip around town. But let me tell you, I'll never go back to those boring Dutch commuter bikes-23 kilos of "order and obey" in the bike lanes, surrounded by commuters who think they own the pavement! They glare at anyone who dares to have a bit of fun on a quirky bike. No, sir, I'm all about biking for the sheer joy of it!
I am living in Stockholm, the birthplace of Monza, which prompted me to call Thomas, who's practically a neighbor.
He filled me in on their pandemic woes-it's been a tough ride for them. But said that next year new things might happen in Europe, they're toying with the idea of making a comeback, possibly teaming up with new distributors if they can find a way to get the production costs down.
So, I'm on the hunt for something that lets me glide effortlessly through the streets, hop down stairs just for kicks, and generally goof around town like it's my personal playground. Who needs rules when you've got wheels, am I right?
sorry, my reply got longer than I first thought it would...
but thanks for getting back! hope you can see the links, and that they work!?
have a good day to you guys there in the USA!

Nice to hear a recap of your guys' videos. I found you during Covid looking for videos about 26" cruisers and found the Hutch review. Since then I kept watching almost every video. Always nice watching you building and riding :) In Germany they wouldn't let us go on a race without having a working front brake. Hopefully nobody tried to pull the front brake in a race going full speed lol. We were always joking about how ridiculous that rule was, but 30 yrs later when I build my Skyway 26, it automatically needed one as well :D This video makes me want to build a Skyway 24 or get the Monza 24. Love the geometry and the Tuffs on it.

i know that "style" is a big part of bmx, but, since you are not jumping and doing tricks in those bikes, wouldnt your riding and cruising experience benefit from having your saddle a little higher? so your knees can extend more on the down stroke? i ride mi bike to work (regular urban bike, i did just that and it was a game changer for my knees and the sfficiency of the pedaling motion

    • @cruisinginthe808
      @cruisinginthe808  10 місяців тому +1

You are absolutely correct in that raising the seat to get your legs stretched out more is the most efficient way to pedal. While I’m not jumping or racing anymore, I still like my seat lower than my bars. I don’t like being hunched over so that’s the main reason I keep my seat lower. I’ve tried to pick up bars that are taller so that I can get the seat up higher. Thanks for sharing that comment and for watching!!

    • @cruisinginthe808

I use the Insta 360 X3 camera. It records a 360 degree view that you can adjust later to determine the angle you want to show. It cuts out the pole and the camera so it looks like someone else is filming. You mount it to your bars and just hit record. It does take more time later to edit though but to me it’s the easiest way to record a ride. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 🤙🏼

I want the 26" Monza but prefer the Skyways on the 24". I'm 6'5" so I'm probably better off getting a 29" SE bike, but the looks of the 24" Monza comes close to the Mongoose's that I used to oogle over at the Schwinn Bike Shop blocks away from where we lived in the Bronx. I would ride my bike everyday if I had the same views here in MD that you guys have in HI. Happy riding!

The Mongoose was actually one of the inspirations for the Monza! That and the Kuwahara Laserlite. If you can get on a bike to try and ride it yourself, that to me is the best way to see if the size is right for you. Regarding braking on the Tuff wheels, they do need to be 'broken in' the factory finish leaves them with a texture and importantly they always worked better with proper Tuff Pads. The genuine Tuff Pads used a special plastic compound that meant they created a powder as they were used rather than regular rubber pads that smeared onto the breaking surface and built up the residue.

24 still feels like a bmx, 26 is just too big to be bmx dimensions, just feels like a more agile beach cruiser.
    I wouldn’t ride anything bigger than a 24, 5-9 tall that’s plenty.
I wouldn’t even enjoy a bmx track, pump track or park on anything bigger than 24, and even in that case I’ll always prefer a 20 for freestyle

    • @cruisinginthe808

All good points. It comes down to the type of riding you want to do. Totally agree that it you want to ride a pump track and hit some jumps, the 24 is the way to go. We do more of the cruising so we’re fine with the 26. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching!!

29" large frame, I'm 6'4", shorty!!! But to be honest, a 24" or 26" exclusive BMX solid fork would be kind of neat.
I would definitely adjust seat ride height to extend my legs properly when cruising and lower if I'm going to pull any shenanigans.

I grew up wanting a chromed out Diamondback Silver Streak.
I had a Team Murray X20R. That's what my parents could afford. I even raced that bike on a bmx track for ABA.
As a 51 year old man, I had to have a big boy BMX. I'm not a fan of the painted bikes. So I found a chromed out Fitbikeco and drove several hours from home to buy it. The chain ring was way too small. It's like the granny gear on a mountain bike. I thought I could just switch it out. But for some reason the design of the bike doesn't allow for upgrades. So now, I want to sell it and buy this chromed out Redline 24 that's not too far from my area.
My beloved 20 inch Murray was chrome, so I want a chromed out big boy BMX. No exceptions.
If I could find a gnarly 24 Torker or Diamondback with the diamond plates. By all means, I'd get one.
When i was about 25 years old, I bought a Torker 280x from a pawn shop in Victorville California. My biggest regret was selling that bike. If I could go back in time, I would be like.. Nope, it's not for sale. Some kid offered me way more than I paid for it. So I took the cheddar. 😢
I loved watching your video and how you guys are still homies cruising together. That's so rad to have. I'm a loan wolf out here in Central California. I ride by myself, I work out in my backyard with weights by myself. But what you have is wonderful. It was great to see.
Like when we were kids, before our teen years, I didn't trip on race or where you lived. If you were cool, let's be friends. But as you get older, you base friendships on social status and I didn't see that with you two. Like I said, I'm so happy for your friendship.
Much love and respect from Central California, city of Tulare.

Both! I have a 26" Race and the 24" Monza, I have to admit the 24 is a tad more fun to me. Question, my Monza with the Skyways has a terrible vibration on the front wheel, you can hear it and of course feel it, it's been a long time since I've had them and they were 20" but this 24" is terrible, the tire looks pretty balanced and not out of round looking but the rim looks like it's not round like it has high and low spots all around the rim, there is no way I can ride this thing like it is, any idea, are these new Skyways junk?

I have never had Mags on my bikes until now so I’m sorry to say that I don’t have any experience in them. Have you tried asking this on the Monza owners group on Facebook? Maybe the other guys with ‘em can tell you more. Ours made terrible noises when braking so we had to make some adjustments to the pads. Also helps to burn them in a little too or sand off a little from the pads. Reach out to Monza too about the rim. They might be able to swap it for you. Sorry I couldn’t help you more!!

I'd prefer my old school 44/16 gearing. I wondered why those front sprockets looked so small. Everything modern bmx looks stupid. The seat slammed to the frame, tiny sprocket, balloon tires, and even the grips.

    • @cruisinginthe808
      @cruisinginthe808  3 місяці тому

The 44/16 does require some extra effort if you ride in an area with some hills. If you're going mostly on flat roads, you're good. We rode that setup in Texas and we needed that gearing to keep up with how fast those dudes rode! For us here in Hawaii, the lower gears work out a little better because of our different terrain. Thanks for watching another one! 🤙🏻

It’s hard to say. Bernie is 5’5” and he likes the 26” although we both thought the Monza 24” felt good too. Depends on what you want to do with it. I think for a pump track and jumping, the 24 would be good. It’s more responsive. My best advice is to see if you can ride one to see how you like it. We’re all different in our tastes and so what might work for me may not work for you. Sorry I couldn’t be more of a help! Appreciate the comment and for watching!!🤙🏼

Thanks for the comment and the feedback. I totally understand where you're coming from. We do have shorter videos where we've interviewed some BMX legends from our past trip that are shorter. Unfortunately the bike build videos are going to be longer because in addition to putting together a bike, we're also using that time to hang out and talk. The videos are also a way for us to spend some time together doing something that we enjoy. I could trim the videos but they wouldn't be the same. Maybe you can watch them in parts and come back when you have more time? We appreciate you watching though whenever you have the time and thanks for your feedback! 🤙🏼
