I find it fascinating how individuals manage to successfully merge an occupation with the intent to entertain. Listening to Lucas regale his early years in Hollywood, you become so engrossed with the politics of the film world that you forget about the film itself.
I had an accounting professor who worked at Fox Studios around this time and told the class “The execs were complaining to the accounting department about the spending of this weird movie? They thought it was a musical. It turned out to be Star Wars!”
What's amazing is that Lucas had little interest in science fiction films when he was young. Everything for him was cars, hot rods, race tracks, which is why he made American Graphitti, and is also why he we see the pod races in The Phantom Menace.
The absolute genius idea to create a sci fi movie in that era was amazing think of how many people used to dream about what’s out there back then either way this movie franchise will always be one of my favorite the sheer content that is associated with Star Wars is unnerving I love finding née things out either from cannon or the old books I never heard of Star Wars will forever be one of my favorite 💯💯
The idea that he had written a 6 hour script that had to split it into 3 and initially used the first third is very misleading. He certainly had ideas that were later developed for the other movies, but George struggled until the final draft of the movie to find a story he was happy with.
Why prequels are AWESOME. 1.It shows the fall of hero, his journey to the dark side, and how the fear can consume even the most noble heart. 2.It shows how darkness manipulates behind the scene, and we should never let our passion turn into bloodlust. 3.Greatest Yoda saying is in prequels.Fear leads to anger, anger lead to hatred, hatred leads to suffering 4.Obi-Wan is super cool character, wise and great warrior at same time while in sequels he just senile old man. 5.Battles are awesome ....
Take a look at THX 1138, by George Lucas. Great visuals, solid story line, a precursor to Star Wars. Maybe George is lacking now, but his previous efforts were by and by amazing for it's time.
They wanted Lord of the Rings. He offered them both that and the Silmarillion he hit the ceiling when they rejected Silmarillion and said no on selling Rings. Later on he relented and messaged them back George Allen and Unwin to at least publish LOTR. The Hobbit was a very good seller for them, they wanted a direct sequel to sell not an epic story for adults that took years for Tolkien to finish. The reason any of it was published in his lifetime was because Rayner Unwin was a devotee of Tolkien.
Whether you like Sci-Fi or Star Wars at all for that matter, you must admit Lucas is easily one of the best story tellers of all time. He’s definitely up there with Tolkien albeit Tolkien is obviously a bit more sophisticated, regardless if he is a step below or 2 under Tolkien, he’s still a legend in his own right. His world building is next level, to be able to make a world that’s influenced by everything from religion to technology. I understand that his dialogue writing skills and directing can be a bit off and definitely isn’t the best, but if you look past that, you’ll know that there was a lot of TLC given to the prequels despite if they weren’t the best in some peoples opinions. But the prequels will always be 1000x better than sequels hands down!! Anakins and Padmes kiss before entering the Geonosis arena was corny to a lot of people but I thought it was epic, it had that Shakespearean feel to it about love. Kylo kissing Rey and disappearing was just stupid and not a very satisfying ending for him, that love they had for one another never had substance to begin with it was obvious it was a rushed side plot. They may own his world now but I’ll always take Lucas side over Disney no matter what, so ya sorry if I have a bias, I just feel the sequels would’ve been 1000x better had Lucas co produced and co directed them, because him having a kingpin grip on everything doesn’t show off his true story telling potential. When he just wrote ESB and produced it, it easily became one of the greatest movies & sequels of all time! The thing that sucks about him was that he was always kind of an outsider in Hollywood, it almost feels like they deliberately made it hard for him to compete with the big studios because he was self made with a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox. He even says that everything he wanted to do after the clone wars show onward, was make a bunch of live action TV shows but with the cost of production, and him being his main investor, he had no choice but to eventually sell it. It was very possible he could’ve ran it into the ground. If he feels anyway about how his characters were used, he has the absolute right to be. Disney used the sequel trilogy just to shit all over George Lucas skywalker saga, the disrespect after selling it to them for $4billion. They can say all they want that amount given was the only way to save Star Wars and get him to sell the rights; ya because no one would sell it for any less to people he had a feeling would try and piss on his legacy. Who knows if he ever trusted Disney but I know he trusted Kathleen Kennedy, let’s just say we know George doesn’t always make the best decisions so choosing her to run Lucasfilm was not a great idea. She wants to pimp out Star Wars to Disney while Filoni and Favreau what to preserve it. Either way I grew up on Star Wars and George Lucas storytelling has influenced me in my music and writing short stories myself. I hope one day George can come back into an official role or to some filming capacity for something instead of being a consultant for others. I bet if you tried the ESB formula of someone else directing and Lucas producing , we’d probably get a great movie every time!!
You mr. Lucas is a genius. Thank you for star wars because it united generations in my family and we found a common bond that united people and families.
6. You need to watch more closely. 8. The main character is Anakin obviously as the prequels deal with his journey to becoming Darth Vader. You do understand the plot of the prequels? There are several themes running, the downfall of the Jedi, the rise of the Sith, Anakin's fall to the dark side, the living Force, the emperor's false flag conflict in order to create an army of clones to wipe out the Jedi. This all sets up the events in the original trilogy.
That 'Space Adventure Saturday Matinee movie' became the world's greatest media franchise and spawned one of the most powerful media empires on the planet.
He could have just walked away from A New Hope as a millionaire and been done with it. But he re-invested a chunk of it back into the next one. It takes some guts to do that honestly. It might be very easy to say I'm just walking away and can retire right now. There are plenty of sequels that flopped.
You can see it as a quick and easy retirement, but you aren't in his shoes - he was an eager filmmaker at the beginning of success. He wasn't thinking about being rich, he wanted to make movies. Most really successful people are not primarily interested in money - they want to succeed at their passion and make a meaningful contribution. Money only provides them the freedom and resources to pursue their dream.
@StarWarrior008 3. Because in his immortal training he over throws the empire and becomes "more powerful then you can ever imagine." Luke watches his mentor killed before his eyes, this gives him the fortitude to go on the journey. Imagine Obi wan on a headset at the end of ANH telling Luke to use the force because he's still alive. 4. They have no idea that they're related, both are attractive and the kiss is simply used to make Han jealous, so not incest. They don't know!
He explained how to avoid the dark side and how to find the balance for ourself and for all the others, focusing the energy in the right way. Thank you so much for your amazing mythological gift to the humanity.
@Jedisunscreen Yea, It's kind of awe inspiring how he started out as the little man, a talented but poor director, and built himself up into a juggernaut capable of rivaling the huge production companies. I guess he basically told himself that he was going to do it right. I've talked to a lot of people at LucasFilm and LucasArts and they all say that it's the best job in the world. They're given so much creative freedom and so many resources. Such a stark contrast to the other industry 'giants'.
@lounza Ewan Mcgregor has been in a few films since Star Wars, Natalie Portman has become a huge star, and Hayden Christensen has had like three successful movies since then. Mark Hamil has an absolutely GINORMOUS list of voice acting roles under his belt now, most prominent being The Joker. The only Star Wars star who never really went anywhere big was Carrie Fisher, but that's not because she couldn't get any high-profile acting jobs. She can get on any movie she wants, she just doesn't.
@Trekiefreak777 I realize it's a pointless debate. The line,“An old friend had learned the path to immortality.” doesn't really sound like Yoda saying,"Hey, I'm going to teach you to talk to Qui-Gon Jin and be immortal when you die, so you can help Luke blow up the deathstar one day." But I guess it's open to interpretation. Sounds more like Qui-gon's going to teach Obi. Or Obi-Wan was part of a huge classroom of "younglings" taught by Yoda? It's Lucas' story, so he can do what he wants. effit.
I do agree with the idea of the "George Lucas effect," but I don't think that applies to Jackson yet. The first Hobbit part was very good and the next ones will be too.
@Rushthatspeaks Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman are fantastic actors. Hayden Christensen is a good actor, if used correctly. Jake Lloyd (child Anakin) was an amazingly good child actor and a great choice for Anakin. And don't you dare diss any of the older actors like Liam Neeson or Ian McDiarmid or Sam Jackson. The whole issue with the prequel trilogy is that they were targeted at a much younger demographic. There are tons of kids who love Star Wars, but haven't even seen the original trilogy
Getting the licensing rights to Star Wars before it was even made has to be the best move George Lucas ever made. I do wonder who gave him that advice or how he decided to ask for that. 99% of people would’ve simply asked for more money to direct it since American Graffiti was a hit. That decision made him a billionaire.
If he's so hooked on editing more stuff into the Star Wars films, why doesn't he attempt to edit them all into one six hour epic like he imagined? That's something I would actually like to see!
@viciousbloodbath Wut u don't understand is that he had the BASIC plot of the movie, not the whole story itself. And besides, a script is bound to go through changes after like, 22 years. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if he had a Podrace planned out. He probably saw Ben-Hur, and he said that Star Wars was inspired by several epic/fantasy things. And actually, at the end of the 3rd film, Yoda tells Obi that he'll instruct him on some things (Like talking to dead jedis).
@MulletPuppet I kinda agree with you there. he may have very good ideas but if he doesn't have the proper support his movies won't be as good. but even so I loved the entire saga and a few of the spinoff tv shows.
I agree. I thought Ep.III was the best of all 6 followed closely by Ep.V, which at the time was the best of the original trilogy. The whingers just can't come to terms with the fact that nobody forces them to watch the prequels. They saw them, didn't like them but instead of moving on and forgetting about them, they whinge and moan at any mention of the prequels. They insist that everyone must hate them and resort to insults if you disagree.
Lucas wrote the script for the original Star Wars. By himself. Locked himself in a room (albeit 1 with a large set of windows) & ground through draft after draft. What is amazing is how incredibly bad all the drafts were up til they were nearly ready to shoot. The original plot ideas were all over the place until George hit gold, sensed it somehow (used the Force?) & stopped where he was, with the script we all know & love. His dialogue was still a bit off, but Kasdan screenwrit ESB/RotJ.
I don't understand Why people whine about the prequels so much. I think that they are superior to the originals. First, Darth Vader is simply the most intriguing character from Star wars. Second, the prequels have far more "realistic" effects. All just Looks more "authentic" and epic in scale. Ep. III is in my opinion the Best one, followed by the Empire strikes back. I wouldn't concentrate on when a Star wars Part was made. People have always bitched about New stuff. Its the Same with Star wa
Why did Lucas sell Star Wars? Star Wars creator George Lucas says he sold the franchise to Disney as he wanted to spend time with his family and raise his daughter. ... However, rather than finishing the Skywalker saga, he sold Star Wars and LucasFilm to Disney in 2012, with Kathleen Kennedy taking over control of the franchise.Dec 4, 2020 (personally, for what it's worth, I would like to see George Lucas get back control and ownership over his own creation, the "Star Wars" franchise. (If you want to know what I really think? I think he heard all hands on deck and gave it up as a mitzvah thinking that sharing was going to help everyone, but, then we ran into predators. We will circle back around to that later. F. Y. I.... Jedi's don't do revenge, we return. One Love, Daniel.
@viciousbloodbath Yes it is. And according to a Star Wars book about Ep. III, it said Yoda was going to teach Obi-Wan how to reach the path of immortality. I hope u have learned the difference between the detailed plot, and the basic plot, before saying a person is "pretending".
At the end of the day George Lucas was the man that catalysed the creation of Star Wars, the films all you fan boys argue for and bash Lucas over. No Lucas meant No Star Wars.

3.Greatest Yoda saying is in prequels.Fear leads to anger, anger lead to hatred, hatred leads to suffering
4.Obi-Wan is super cool character, wise and great warrior at same time while in sequels he just senile old man.
5.Battles are awesome
....
in his works you have to look for symbols to get the full brilliance of his work
Happy Birthday to the creator of Star Wars Geroge Lucas thank you George for star wars may the force be with you I absolutely love star wars
Take a look at THX 1138, by George Lucas. Great visuals, solid story line, a precursor to Star Wars. Maybe George is lacking now, but his previous efforts were by and by amazing for it's time.

JRR Tolkien was also turned down by a bunch of publishers when he was trying to get Lord of the Rings published.
May the force be with you
May the Force be with You, Lucasfilm.
What I love about George Lucas is that he cares about the story and how the story is told. Unlike Disney!
I love Star Wars thank you for it I know every thing about it
He is a genius.
Thank you George Lucas.
Just like Stephen king and stan lee and many others u never give up and god damn I'm glad he didnt made us all love this world and grew up with them
HE STILL MADE THE WHOLE DAMN THING! THE WHOLE STORY!
Omg we love you!!!!Love you we do,proud you should be.May the force be with you.
Ambition and a belief in your self and abilities is a big plus even if you will face obstacles and naysayers.Thank you Lucas :)
I admire George Lucas so much!
I still think the original Star Wars was an incredible idea to even have let alone create and bring to life
Damn, i love this man.
Episode 3 was great, but you are right about 1 and 2.
@StarWarrior008
Such a stark contrast to the other industry 'giants'.
i agree with you and that's what i had to say in another video, if it weren't for him, there would be no star wars movies nor games.
Loved star wars
I’m glad he got to make his little space adventure
we love star wars
Star Wars in my
The reason Star Wars is so successful is because it’s about people, not space ships…
Coruscant didnt exist before the prequels, and we all love Coruscant! right?
cmon man! you need to start making movies with soul in them!!!!
@MulletPuppet I kinda agree with you there. he may have very good ideas but if he doesn't have the proper support his movies won't be as good. but even so I loved the entire saga and a few of the spinoff tv shows.
@legoindyshortround I have watched the review and it still does not change my opinion on the fact that the star wars series is still amazing
Actually, it was Harrison just ad-libbing that did that. Irvin just ran with it because he was smart enough to realize it actually worked. CUT! PRINT!
His dialogue was still a bit off, but Kasdan screenwrit ESB/RotJ.
wish George Lucas would return to STAR WARS though I know it is not possible.. still pray for a miracle.
Happy B day george!
Why did Lucas sell Star Wars?
Star Wars creator George Lucas says he sold the franchise to Disney as he wanted to spend time with his family and raise his daughter. ... However, rather than finishing the Skywalker saga, he sold Star Wars and LucasFilm to Disney in 2012, with Kathleen Kennedy taking over control of the franchise.Dec 4, 2020
(personally, for what it's worth, I would like to see George Lucas get back control and ownership over his own creation, the "Star Wars" franchise.
(If you want to know what I really think? I think he heard all hands on deck and gave it up as a mitzvah thinking that sharing was going to help everyone, but, then we ran into predators. We will circle back around to that later.
F. Y. I.... Jedi's don't do revenge, we return.
One Love,
Daniel.
And the greatest sci-fi movie ever made came from “I’ve been thinking about a space, adventure serial movie”
@viciousbloodbath Yes it is. And according to a Star Wars book about Ep. III, it said Yoda was going to teach Obi-Wan how to reach the path of immortality.
I hope u have learned the difference between the detailed plot, and the basic plot, before saying a person is "pretending".
1:26 what does he mean by 20k to fund the screenplay? i was assuming you literally just type up a story.
He got paid 20k hence why he said he was no longer broke.
At the end of the day George Lucas was the man that catalysed the creation of Star Wars, the films all you fan boys argue for and bash Lucas over. No Lucas meant No Star Wars.
