But when the heart was open it was stabbed until it couldn’t beat anymore life or love but not both never both
this is a story of depression. she built a castle in her mind so she wouldn't get hurt. the only problem was, nobody could get in to help her, and the castle (her mind) was drowning yet in fire at the same time. the drowning symbolizes natural destruction, such as the wearing down of the walls. the fire is inner turmoil that this depression has caused, destroying almost everything but her depression, the rubble that remains. she will eventually be happy again, but she will never truly forget her fight with depression. she only wants to love and be loved, though her mind will never let her do so. hence the line "and there's no one to love you if you trap yourself inside."

there is something about this song that makes me feel strangely sad and empty
It's about a person who has gone through trauma and therefore closed off their emotions and shut everyone out. Despite this they need love to truly heal. Not necessarily romanticly but maybe from friends or family. People who have shut out everyone due to trauma usually shut off their emotions and therefore feel empty. It's a sad song in general.
I know, this song is so sad. I know why though, at least for me. I understood what it meant immediately, being a song about a girl with depression who "builds up her walls" to protect herself from her feelings, but she can't find a way to be as she's closed off herself emotionally.

Same! Personally, I think the beat on this song is the most upbeat & drum based song from Alec, which should make it more lively. But, somehow, this song hits somewhere so different. Right when I actually listened to the lyrics, this song hit really hard. It kinda makes me feel the same way the song is describing, having a happy and cheerful or even perfect outside, but deep inside, it’s so bitter and helpless and honestly makes me want to cry. This song from him holds a special place, it’s a masterpiece.

Edit (10/20/22): wow I forgot I made this comment. I went through a lot the last few years and it took so much effort to pull myself out of my depression but surrounding myself with positive and loving people helped me realize my worth and it helped me a ton

I was standing by the water fountain when I saw steve doing Annabelle's homework. They had to let me down slowly so that I would settle down and deal with the pain of not winning the paper crown. I looked into my mother's eyes and said if we have each other then we'll be ok. The knife in my back, from the boy who was in the bubble killed me. The boys name was Gabriel.
Pt 2 - more songs (continued) but he got bored of pretending he knew the boy in the bubble, so he built a friend. Oh I envy you, Gabriel. That was the worst day of my life. It was 1994 when all of this happened. I had to ride my old bicycle home as I was outrunning karma that day, in an attempt to find Jesus in LA. The only thing I remembered was my mother's eyes though, from when she was tying my laces as a child.

I usually don't write this type of comments but i came back to this song after years of not listening to it because it reminded me of my lowest, but i need to say that this song saved my life and helped me cope with all the shitty things that happened to me at that time, it helped me let it all out and make me feel like i wasn't alone. Alec- I know you probably will never see this comment, but this is the best song I've ever heard in my entire life. I love your music so so much, and I relate to almost all of your songs so much. Especially this one. I was in a time of struggle in my life and nothing seemed to be going right for me. I was actually thinking about ending my life, but I heard this song and I don't know what, but something inside me clicked and I didn't want to leave this world yet. I continue to look forward to new demos and new songs that you post and I haven't had any suicidal thoughts in about a year and a half. I love you so much (which sounds kinda stalkerish and weird- but it's true) and I love you music so much. Just come here to compare how different the new version is. And wow. It's so weird coming back to this song after so long. I love both the new and old versions but Alec sounds so unbelievably different and it's amazing. I've grown so much since I first listened to this song all those years ago when I was doing my GCSEs, now I'm in my second year of university. I've grown since then and so it seems has Alec. We all change over time and the changes between this and the new version just reflect that beautifully in my opinion
