I wouldn't say that she lost to Zorro on the basis of skill but rather on the basis of emotion and awareness of her surroundings. Early during the duel, she showed to be better skilled but as the fight went on her frustration and temper caused her to lose and I think this was intentional on Zorro's part. He knew that she wasn't an amateur so his best course of action was to rattle her emotionally and wait for her to make a mistake. It was his strategy from the start by attempting to walk past and imply that she didn't know how to use a sword was a deliberate attempt to get a rise out of her. If you can't keep a cool head in a fight then you've already lost the fight before it even began because you'll be on defense while the opponent will have a clear mind and see your obvious mistakes.

This is a nice contrast to how Alejandro acts whenever he fights Captain Love. The man killed his brother, preserved the head, and drinks from the embalming fluid. Everything about Love makes Alejandro's blood boil. That's why he always loses to Love...until he is able to turn the tables and get Love to start feeling some rage of his own.
Also she had PROPER instruction, and so knew perfectly well how to fight against another rapier on a stable footing. When he lured her into a haystack and grabbed that thing off the wall, she basically didn't know what to do besides the "pointy end goes into the other man". She was better trained to fight fair, he was better trained to fight dirty and be more verstatile.
He has more skill than her. but he can't go all out against a señorita. it's better to use mind games and make her lose focus. nobody gets harmed. but she gets humiliated. badly. she took pride on her skills, he proved that she wasn't even an amateur compared to him.
Yeah, she has notables sword skills, yet, she lacked the discipline to keep herself focused, making easy to the Zorro exploits this weakness, and leaves her in disadvantage.
Only teens of late90s/early2000s can relate...how iconic the scene was and the experience

An underrated, wonderful movie, one of my favorites! It has everything: excellent acting, duel scenes/action sequences, soundtrack, chemistry between the characters, a revenge plot, romance story, and mentor-student relationship. The way a swashbuckling film should be done!

This is the best Zorro ever done - and there have been many versions. Zeta-Jones was red hot in this film and Antonio was absolutely perfect as Zorro; funny and dynamic. In the top 10 sword films ever made.
The Three Musketeers is another great one.

I just realised how at 1:02 he starts walking around her, and she ends up with the sun in her face. I wonder if that was intentional from Alejandro to test out her awareness in a combat situation. Sure she's been given proper training, but he doesn't know for sure how well she would manage in a real fight. Clever thinking from him, and it shows her inexperience in an actual fight.

I was fortunate enough to see this in theatres. Now own the DVD. Great movie, Hopkins and Banderas were awesome, and Zeta-Jones was just gorgeous and perfect for the role. Back when movies used a lot of practical effects and relied on good storytelling writing and acting, clever dialog, and characters, not computer magic.

An underrated aspect of this movie is the music by James Horner (Titanic, Braveheart, Wrath of Khan, Aliens, The Rocketeer, etc...).
I think it was nominated for an Academy Award for best music, don't remember if it won.

TECHNICALLY, I think she was better than him at fencing. They outfenced each other on an even basis when they were playing around. Then he started stealing kisses from her and flustering her. But the moment she got serious, she disarmed him. The reason he won in the end is because he's basically better at everything else. Situational awareness, remaining level-headed, acrobatics, use of surroundings, etc. Put them in a straight up fencing competition and I bet she wins.

The first Batman comic is a 1:1 Xerox job of a shadow pulp called partners of peril, featuring Traced art and lifted dialogue. Batman ripped off the shadows gimmicks, storylines and villains for the first 5 years of his existence and only started to diverge when he stopped wielding pistols and killing crooks.
The whole "Zorro inspired Batman" thing is a Convenient lie DC props up to hide Bob kane and Bill finger"s blatant theft.
It doesn't even make sense because the zorro movie they say inspired Batman didn't even come out untill a few years after the original Batman comic.
