PNI Vs Midland magmount aerial supertest Pt1 of 2 ....SWRing them all

  • We've bought the PNI ML160, ML100, ML70, S75, S40 & Midland LC65, 59 & 29 antennas, all on magmounts to see how well they perform. I SWR'd the Midland ones on previous video with a conventional SWR meter.
On this video, David (Quotageous) came & helped to SWR these PNI aerials. We used an MFJ analyser to do the SWR as it is quicker than a traditional meter & because we have on to hand.
All the PNI aerials came out of the box more or less centrally SWRed on channel 20 of the CEPT band. As we will only be using them on the I=UK band, all the aerials except one needed some whip cutting off...as much as 3 inches on one. We got them all spot on central to the UK centre channel 20 frequency of 27.79125Mhz.
Part 2 is straight onto the field test a few days later.

Interesting. I got a little wil antenna and and a nightmare trying to obtain UK SWR. Would be interesting if you test one

People buy these rigs with the baby twig included, try them, find that their SWR is in the red on all 40 channels, then return them believing them to be faulty, as it states that they're pre SWR'd but they clearly don't work. These companies need to add some extra instructions for UK buyers.

Yes, they should be quite clear that they are pre-SWRed to CEPT channels & will need cutting for UK channels.

I had, I believe, a 'Modulator'. Had a little yellow ring on top of the coil. It was pretty good. This brings back some memories! :D

We do have & use modulator aerials & they are excellent. The aerial on gthe usual test car (the Nissan Leaf) is a drilled in mounted cheap modulator copy called a 'red thunder'. Same performance but they only last about 3 years. We deliberately use that rather than expensive aerials to enable people to replicate our good range themselves, even if they are on a tight budget.

The best antennas i have used to date are the K40/The US made Skip shooter/Full size stinger tornado.
I lost the stinger tornado when i lent it to someone to try.
The skip shooter was stolen when i forgot to take it off the van.
Many thanks to all for the fun video.

Bear in mind the current K40 is not the same quality as the one you & I had in the past.

The skip shooter i had was the 6 foot with one of them big spring on the base it was on a transit van right in the middle of the roof sitting in it's body mount. "When someone wants something they will get it".

interesting to see the results from this test - i feel more metal in the sky and less coils will win, who knows

With the PNI S 75 does it matter where you shorten it , above the center coil or below ?

Above the coil. Very short aerials like this are difficult to SWR & you'll find you're probably not able to have a satisfactory SWR over 40 channels.

Oh, my. We need to start a Tango Towers Replace The Shed gofundme, don't we? Understand about the not-a-fashion-show. I'm sure we're all OK with that. Same reason I don't usually turn my camera on during a work Zoom. :-)
Looking forward to the Field Test.

Excellent video Richard, That meter is a really useful bit of kit for that type of thing. I was hoping for a quick shot of that old fidelity in the sentry box there. Rob

Analysers are a great way to check SWR. I use my Nano VNA these days, much easier than an SWR meter.

I think we nearly saw one of the tango towers aerial in this! 😃 Cheers Richard, great video.
