Volvo/Polestar seems to be one of the few manufacturers that's really been consistent lately with nice products
They’re getting into face recognition to read whatever mood you’re in. No thanks.
Lately? Volvo has been killing the game since day one.
@@0thers1d3 That's true but I felt like they kinda flew under the radar for a little while in the 2010s, but they're coming back in a big way
@@0thers1d3 ford ownership was a disaster

@@PremierAutoMan86 hopefully stuff wont change in worse because of it
WHOA WHAT?!!
@@PremierAutoMan86 what happened, who invested???
He’s like Uncle Scrooge from Ducktales. Doing backstrokes in a pit of money 😂
Instead of taking an existing design and evolving it with more stuff (character lines, etc.), they took the previous xc90 & xc60 look and distilled it to its essence. I think it fits the idea of an electric vehicle and I really like it, so as far as SUVs go, I wouldn't actually mind seeing this on my parking spot on a daily basis.
They’ve been doing this since the original s60 and s80. You can clearly tell that each remodel is a slightly revised version of the last generation. It’s worked so far though
CHINA IS A FASCIST TOTALITARIAN REGIME ! NOT A USUSAL BUSINESS PARTNER ! ANY PERSON OR COMPANY WHO ADVERTISES CHINESE COMPANIES AND BRINGS THEM TO SHINE ACTS CRIMINAL _ AGAINST HIS OWN DEMOCRATICE VALUES LIVING IN FREEDOM!
POLESTAR AND VOLVO ARE THE GREATEST PROPAGANDA TOOL FROM CHINA TO INFLUENCE MANIPULATE AND DESTRUCT OUR SOCIETY !
STOP IMPORTS FROM CHINA. RESHORE AND DECOUPLE FROM EVIL COUNTRIES !
But develop something that they call from ground up, they should have addressed consumer needs & market trends as third row seats are no longer meant for kids alone. More Boot space with 3 rows but cramped 3rd row legroomup is not a desired feature in today's world.
Personally an electric vehicle makes a viable financial option if owned for atleast 10 years which majority dont do. So if I was on a budget I would have preferred Palisade Calligraphy costing 40% less with more space, luxury & opulence with decent fuel consumption (diesel variant) or with a better budget be buying a Escalade if I was in US. Again thats my opinion & I am not forcing that on you or anyone
@Scott Natte They went the Tesla route, from 10+ years ago - Slap on 2 cheap screens, design and manufacture a lot less things, use relatively cheap materials, save on costs but charge more than before. It's a great strategy for the company, but bad for the consumer. I wouldn't say this looks nearly as luxurious as higher end Hyundais and Kias, or the new Mazda CX90, let alone Genesis or SUVs from more established luxury brands. Seeing as the battery/range/performance/driving feel will be similar to all other EV SUVs, I'm not seeing a huge selling point for this one, unless it's priced way below other luxury SUVs. But I guess the headlights move for now reason, so take my money!
@scottnatte1345 you realize Volvo was one of the automakers who started the whole giant infotainment screen when the 2nd gen xc90 came out right
volvos bowers and Wilkins sound system + tune is NO joke. my brothers 2023 Volvo has the B&W in it too and it literally pounds harder than most tuned systems that ive heard. its mind blowing.
Man, those headlights will be sooooo expensive to replace but I like the way it looks.
Yeah but hey if you have an 80k vehicle it shouldn't be a problem, plus warranty
And the backlighted "wood", the fake leather with integrated speakers etc.
@@Brotherhood676 Yeah but once it’s just out of warranty by a month or so, that’s when parts fail.
It also applies to everyday items just out of warranty as well.
Thought the same about the lidar thing. Oh no my £10 wiper needs replacing... oh wait that'll be £299.95 😂
Considering the mechanism is in a completely sealed enclosure (in contrast to pop up headlights) I’d assume they shouldn’t really break…
Very exciting to see the EX90 reviewed, I was involved in mechanical integration of the cameras and sensors supporting the autonomous drive and safety systems. This is actually the first time I've seen a complete overview of the car. As an engineer you usually get tunnel vision and only focus on the components you're working on...
Thats so cool man. As a Tesla guy, this is one of the first EV's from another manufacturer i could see myself driving. I hope you guys are able to match Tesla in terms of AP functionality on highway, that would be enough for me. Keep up the great work, Volvo is awesome.
That's very interesting, do you work for a company that provides engineering services to Volvo/other car manufacturers? Or are you a Volvo engineer?
@@TioMogi I work for a consultant company (Alten group), Volvo Cars is one of our customers.
@@tornilsson6231 cool, appreciate the insight! I'm also an engineer but in a totally different industry (nuclear energy) so I'm always curious about other engineering positions.

@@TioMogi I live and work in Gothenburg Sweden.
Edit: The company I'm working for also have an office in the US should it be of interest, they are called "Xdin" and are based in Greensboro, NC.
This Volvo is perfect in every way. The headlights, switching from regular headlights to running lights, is mind blowing. I'll probably get an EX90 when I want to replace my current car.
What I love about Volvo is that they are distinctive, and still have character. So many other car manufacturers fail at this, but I wouldn’t mind having this be what I drive. It’s fun and unique looking, which are two things that I look for when buying a car
I thought they didn't actually integrate actual headlights for this and the concept was just DRL but wow! Very cool.
Anything to make it more expensive for the consumer.
@@nicholas440 LEDs are stupid cheap nowadays man
@@nibs7252 yep but a whole assembly with everything built into one unit? They don't just replace a bulb. Requires a whole new headlight assembly
@@nicholas440 yes in 30 years when the LEDs go bad you’ll have to replace the assembly😂
@@hourlongcoder3098 work bought a fleet of 2020 GMC 3500s. One of them had a faulty headlight assembly within the first month. Shit isn't reliable anymore
Doug, if you read this I'd be really into a weekend video going into more detail about Cars and Bids. Who makes the final decision on what is and isn't a cool car to be listed, your team size, how much of your time it takes up vs the video shooting etc. Some cars that have been rejected for not being cool enough would also be interesting. But it would be good to learn a bit more about the operation.
That sounds like a really good video for More Doug Demuro, too bad he doesn't remember the password to his channel.

I thought I've see every headlight design there is, but the Daytime Running Light opening up to expose the headlight is kind of cool.
XC40 and V60 in our garage in home! We love volvo! Excited to see more of their cars. Annoys me that almost every electric car has a sun roof that doesn’t open :(
This! I've always loved having my sunroof wide open in the spring and fall.
Seeing how Volvo's current lineup was all inspired by the XC90, I'm interested to see how this new design language will trickle down
Dude imagine having to fix just the windshield wipers, let alone those headlights. What if the headlights stay stuck closed 😂
I was thinking about this too. I don't know if this is typical of Volvo but those non-standard parts mean higher repair costs. Then again, if you can afford this car in the first place, that may not really be a problem.
Volvo covers all Maintenance. I’m sure this’ll be the same.

@@HandsomeMoose no didn't you read his comment? Its not plastic, its gold.
I love it when car-makers take that extra step to make everything a little more convenient and safe. Makes you feel like you're getting your money's worth.
The front trunk is already compromised by Volvo's cost cutting.
I had a 2004 XC90 and now own a 2021 XC40! This most likely will be my next car! Love Volvo! Excited to see the next review!
Imagine getting into a minor collision and having to replace that headlight.
People who think like that dont buy this.
people who buy this car can afford to replace it
Car headlights have been expensive AF in the luxury segment for a while now. My mom's Mercedes wagon cost $2k to replace after a collision. It's not even a top model, or anything fancy.
My thoughts exactly.
I can afford the car. It’s still a consideration. Not as much the replacement cost in a collision, but when it fails to operate properly. People who can afford the car value their time. I don’t want it going to the shop constantly and the headlight must function for safety reasons.
Thank you Doug! Looking forward to the full review of the production EX-90.
Such a stunning vehicle! Can’t wait to see what they do with the rest of the Volvo lineup as far as styling goes! Especially the wagons
This vehicle has the coolest headlight design in the industry. No contest.
I agree!
At this point in time yeah probably
everyone else: here is the new mazda cx-90!
doug: here is the new volvo ex-90!
ha ye i noticed
That headlight seems like exactly the sort of thing to break just outside of warranty and cost 10k to fix because of all the custom gubbins.
well. corning light work and that is just also a motor.
it's literally no more advanced than pop-up headlights were back when those came out, but did you say that about those back then? Of course not, just another grumpy old man that's unnecessarily suspicious of things that he's unable to understand.
@@moogle68 No. I think people said that about popup headlights back then too, and they were justified considering the number of them that you see that have failed.
What's old is new again. The first thing I thought of was some 1970s Lincoln land yacht with the headlights hidden behind doors. Moving parts will break.
@@jake2011rt Well yes, after a decade or so. And lets not forget that electronics back then were just shitty in general, so I agree that there have been very real examples of electronics being unreliable, and even today there are some, but I wish more people were not so stupid as to lump all electronics from all points in time and all countries, and all companies into the same fucking boat of "if it moves without me touching it, it will break"-thinking. Standards are so much higher, experience has grown exponentially, and improvements are more available and widely known, so how about joining the modern world and waiting until you have correlated proof of unreliability before making that claim before just jumping to that assumption any time an electric motor is involved?
Hmm, I was sceptical at first... but it looks really good! Love the design and interor, and those lights are just bonkers! Cool EV, Volvo.
Insurance companies will love those headlights. So why was your new Volvo totaled? It needed both headlights replaced.
I remember when volvos were station wagons for old people. Now they're so cool that I enjoy spotting them in the wild. 🤠
No way! The wagons were the best!
They'll never be as cool as the 80's and 90's models. In my opinion anything that's not boxy isn't a Volvo.
@@volvo09 Paul Newman owned one of those that he put in a Mustang GT engine from the era in it. Now that was a cool car owned by a cool person.
My Favorite is the V70 R (basically an 850 but slighty more modern)
They're also some of the best selling brands in Europe. The electric xc40 was the most popular car in some countries for months
Ok, Im 5 minutes in and I can already tell those windshield wipers are going to be trouble.
Adding that end sprayer into a consumable component is surprising. I guess owners won’t be buying new wipers from the local automotive store.
The blink of the headlights probably took 1 mile of range 😉
Really love the opening lights. It feels like manufacturers try to put more love and effort into their vehicles to make sure people buy their ev's.
Volvo's electrification game is next level. Can't wait for the EX50 and hopefully an ES60!
ES60? Nio is gonna sue them lol

just thinking of the INSAME repair costs for all these EVs makes me say NO.
The trick headlights are awesome 😊 until they malfunction 🫢 love the design ❤❤❤❤ nice clean crisp lines 👍🏾 fantastic review as usual ☺️
As much as I hate retracting door handles I'm glad volvo put that lip there as I will always default to using that lip instead of the electronic
It happens automatically when you unlock the car, what are you gonna do not unlock it?
@@cenciende9401 Still though, in the case the handle motor broke it won't be the end of the world for this car. I love the little redundant design like this.
So no windshield wipers? Or will you have to navigate through several touch screen menus every time it rains?
When he said "the headlight is behind the drl" i wasnt expecting it to literally be behind the drl, definitely didnt think the drl would move out of the way either
Anybody else find the irony in sustainability eco friendly seats but the absolute destruction and pollution required for the lithium batteries.
How about the cruelty of using children in the Chinese owned colbalt mines in the Congo. But Volvo is owned by the Chinese and controlled by the CCP.
Or bragging up the sustainable materials in a disposable vehicle. Those seats will look great in a landfill in 15 years.
Everyone else is showing the Mazda CX-90, but not doug. lol
@ 18:39 that Swedish Flag on the dash is also an expansion joint to prevent snapping the trim when the dash cools and heats. It only has to allow a minor adjustments, but it's a cool little feature they don't really talk about.
Clever!
I think that backseat had a built in center booster seat, which works great btw, and is really handy
It’s come in handy in our xc90. It was my wife’s only stipulation when we bought it.
Everybody is showing the new CX-90, but Doug is showing the EX-90. Different, but in a good way.
For those wondering what the teaser car is: It’s a BYD Han, a Chinese sedan
Everyone's doing CX90 reviews, but Doug is the kinda guy to do an EX90 review.
I think it looks absolutely sick. We own an XC90 and absolutely love it. It s a shame I won t be able to afford this one. In Canada, it ll probably sell for more than 100k when taxes and others fees included .
The wool seats look so comfy and cozy
Love my volvo and love this new EV version. Will definitely be upgrading but am a little concerned about the door handle being right in front of the window button. How are those not going to get confused?
Doug the type of guy to show us a center storage area strap the same way he'd show his date a great time. 17:42
I know there was no chance of Doug saying “Big News” after the intro but I’m always anticipating it😂
Doug you missed an easter egg! =) the built in booster in the second row center seat there is literally a latch in front of it and it turns into a federally approved Booster "the bench option" it is super with kiddos, we have it in our 2019 XC90!
I rushed to the comment to type the same thing... I guess Doug is a different bred from other car journalists...
Doug is the kinda guy who publishes ES90 review when every other car channel is releasing their Mazda CX-90 video.
As a lifelong Volvo owner & enthusiast, it is disappointing that the company is completely phasing out gas cars.
Once Thor's Hammer headlights, now Iron Man's Eyes headlights.
Those headlights are really cool
Including the interior dimensions is a really cool touch!
I have faith in Volvo in most aspects except for its multimedia and control system.
I'm usually a good adapter to different cars, I just couldn't get a hang on the Volvo system. I had a road trip from Amsterdam to Paris few years ago and S90 was the only type of car left within the booking grade at rental. For 8 days, I never got used to it, and I doubt I ever will.
DOUG the opening/closing headlamps are the kind of things that make a great short video give it a try!!!!!
Does it taze you if you sin, like eating meat or thinking for yourself? That's important to me as a conscientious consumer in 2023.
Big Volvo Vibes 🇸🇪
I like the idea of just the two switches. I’m always lowering the back windows by mistake
Can't wait for the full review and see it running!!! Looks interesting!!
Still a shame we're departing from buttons to big touchscreens. Just look at a phone after a days usage... Hope ya like cleaning.
Besides, there's been a study where changing Various settings, like ac, radio, settings etc. Is still quickest and least complicated in an old Volvo. I miss the cute little t9 pad in the 2nd gen Volvo v40's and so on.
I'm so glad that they have the luxury wool interior. Would much rather have a high end cloth than fake leather
Me too. I hate leather. Burning hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter, doesn't breathe and your back gets sticky. Give me breathable warm soft cloth. There's a reason why the Toyota Century comes with wool.
@@bwofficial1776 exactly, i hate the fact leather is considered luxury and standard on expensive cars, they are sticky and uncomfortable in summer, and cold as hell in winter. Cloth seats are so much better, glad Volvo went with it.
Hahaha
I have this on my V60 Recharge. It’s wonderful and really upgrades the interior.
@@onlythebest3311 Leather being considered luxury is very American. It’s easier to find 1980s Mercedes S-class with cloth or velour seats in Europe than with leather. Later leather became more common but I have a feeling it’s far more common in the US. Considering that you can get Mercedes and BMW models with cloth seats here in Europe.
We love the attention to detail that Volvo put into the EX90.❤
16:30 I'm glad that this car has these sensors to prevent hot car deaths. I think all cars need to have this feature.
I work in Volvo and we are very excited at work for this new model, there’s a lot more to expect for the production car👀 you should make a video about the C40, that’s another cool electric car🔋🇸🇪
Does Volvo accept feedback on their software? I’m in some trouble with it after an update on my 2018 xc60
If you work at Volvo tell them (a) no space for a spare wheel is a dealbreaker. Why does the front trunk space have to be kidney-shaped, when it could be shaped to let an owner carry a spare wheel if they want to? (b) not everyone wants three rows - do NOT make them non-optional. I want the storage / load-lugging space. (c) utterly typical of today's driver that the only physical button is for twiddling with sound system, and that the one thing I will want to adjust while actually driving - the climate controls - seem to demand I play with menus and touch screens... and there I was, thinking Volvo was safety-minded. Not any more, it seems.
Hello! I have a 22 S60 and love it. Had a 21 V60 Polestar Engineered as well. Stunning cars. The new EX90 looks excellent, with the exception of the needlessly complicated window switch. 4 switches are always preferred to 1 or 2 there. Other than that, looks great!
But that's a chop-top XC40, a very familiar car. This one is all-new and moving in Volvo's new direction. The c40 isn't bad though and a move to RWD is a good one.
The headrests don't look movable. Is that the case? Because every Volvo I've ever sat in has been extremely painful after just a few minutes because of the horrible headrests pushing my neck forward. I won't own a car that I'd need a sawzall to cut off the headrests because they aren't adjustable.
Would love if they offered an extra long version of this car. Would really improve the use ability of the 3rd row of seats.
A longer version is coming, ex90 excellence
@@erikbuiten14 reading up on the Excellence model. It looks like its just a 4 x seat luxurious version of the standard car. It doesn't seem to be longer?
Those are usually only available in China, they have the bmw 3L, 5L, etc..every model of most brands have a L version
Can't wait to try one of these out. Looks amazing
I find those rear interior door handles really cool. They remind me of the ones used in the 700/900 serieso
I really wish auto journalists/reviewers would stop focusing in horsepower and torque and instead focus on efficiency and or range.
Not much choice but to make that pivot once it’s all EV show.
I really don’t understand how a car with one single button can be more comfortable and safe to use then a car with normal buttons that give you a feedback without having to look at it like in a screen! 😳 this is crazy
Absolutely all hopped on then Tesla wagon. It looks hideous as well but more importantly as you mention, not half as good to operate as buttons. Who on earth needs that size of vertical!! screen in the car?
Nobody likes these dumb touch features. Yet that’s what every manufacturer is doing. Everyone wants actual buttons.
Not sure if you have driven a modern Volvo. I had a 2018 XC90 top end. As much as I hated the touch only , no button operations, once you set it up, the system was intelligent to realize the driving conditions. For example , be,ow 40F the steering heat, seat heat would come on. Initially high and auto reduce to lowest level. Climate with air ionizer and humidity control was fully automatic like any modern day lux cars. In summer if it was too hot the sunroof shades would close automatically. Automatic Hugh beam control, active bending and cornering lights, heated windshield wipers that did not spray water but flowed through holes in the wiper stalks minimizing splash, fluid wastage etc. the B&W system was simply outstanding. Plus all these settings customized and linked to each key and the driver including infotainment, radio preferences. So whoever had the customized keys, got everything pre done and ready. Surprisingly there was very less to mess around with the touch screen.
@@dgdave2673 I worked for car rental companies for 7 years I’ve driven almost any new model of almost any brand and my opinion for a driver buttons are always better then screens in term of feedback and more then everything you just watch the road! Screen need to be watched a button can be up or down and your finger can do the job! Eyes on the road ahead!
Man is this a cool car, imagine what a nightmare if any of these computers fail man
We had a Volvo once and my dad was always commenting that it had seven computers, and they would fail!
Great review, the most detailed that I have seen for this car so far.
Doug Like the content amazing been subscribed for years. But I wanted to ask a question when you record behind the camera 🎥 are you commentating later through editing and uploading it. Or are you talking right there on the spot making the recording
Idk if this is a popular or unpopular opinion but I'm not nearly ready to buy an electric car considering where I live and amount of driving i do. I feel like the industry is moving way too fast away from gas offerings.
I hear you. I park on the street and my office doesn't have chargers. I'd have to sit at a public charger for an hour every few days. Toyota is making the right decision going all-in on hybrids. Refuel anywhere without range anxiety, minimal range loss due to weather, smaller batteries are less expensive to replace. Many parts of the country are simply too remote for EVs. EVs don't work for everyone and every situation but the government is trying to force a one size fits all solution to a problem that's not even a problem.
ICE vehicles will be around for decades, don’t worry. And Toyota is 100% correct with the direction they are going .
7:14 "Pretty good cargospace" - My V90 says Hold my beer.
Folding the third row from the side door makes so much sense because that's where you have to be to remove any belongings like a sweater or carseat that would be in the way of folding it.
I like the two button window control setup. I seldom roll down the correct window the first time. a toggle switch would prevent that embarrassment.
Absolutely stunning design inside and out. Scandinavian minimalism at its best. Beautiful and clean lines all around. Taillights next to the window are very 2008 Focus hatchback. I still don’t like this trend of putting hubcaps instead of real rims!
That Swedish flag on the dash board is also the give point for the real wood trim whenever the wood expands with varying humidity - it expands into that joint so the wood doesn’t crack
Big, heavy electric cars are IMO a dead end - its a trend that will last for some years but with time and energy crysis, big car companys will turn to smaller cars and hybrid drive
80k for a car is insane
you will own nothing and be happy (and only be allowed to buy EVs that track everywhere you go and only let you go there when your credit score is high enough)

I love all the glass roofs on these newer vehicles, but I wonder how much heat and light they might add especially in warmer, sunny climates. I did not hear Doug mention if this vehicle offers a shade. Another thing I wonder about is on a Tesla when the glass windshield goes right into the roof what happens if you get a cracked windshield, does that mean you need to replace the entire roof? That sounds expensive.
whats going to happen when you flip over in a wreck and your glass roof explodes?
