Ian Thorpe was an icon and inspiration to the youth of the 2000's. I was 7 years old, and I just remember him being awesome. He's a huge part of my childhood. Love his grace!
Etta the amazing thing about Thorpe then was that he wasn’t a sprinter like Hall was. Hall was a born pure sprinter , so that’s what makes the final leg by Thorpe even more amazing especially after he had swum the 400 mtr final earlier which would’ve drained him emotionally bigtime
To be fair.... 1. They all did amazingly well. 2. KLIM. World record start. If he'd just swum the existing world record, Thorpe wouldn't have stood a chance.
In over 60 yrs of loving & living sport, Thorpy's finish is the greatest moment have seen. To give the world champion a start, & catch him, is amazing.

Yep, same. Swimming in most countries outside the USA is a fringe sport, despite the hours required in the pool at stupid o'clock in the morning. We don't need d**kheads like Gary Hall cheerleading it. Shame as Matt Biondi was always incredibly graceful
Ian Thorpe was and is an out and out legend, ... a Superstar! I hope that his life now is as happy as he made our lives when we where watching him dominate in the pool. I loved watching these guys, including the likes of Kieren Perkins, Daniel Kowalski, Grant Hackett .... but my all time favorite was Michael Klim. Klimmy was a monster, a competitive beast who never left anything in the pool. Wish you all the best Michael with your current challenge mate.

First, we took America's Cup, then we took Aussie Gold in the Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle!
One of the greatest swimmers of all time talking to one of the greatest interviewers of all time. I don't remember watching this race, even though I know I must have, but I do remember that Australia was just buzzing during the Olympics. What an amazing few weeks that was!
Without question my favourite olympic moment ever. I loved watching Bolt get his third 100m title and Cathy getting her 400m title, but nothing has ever been as emotion-evoking as the final leg of this race. Air guitar post-race is peak "get that up ya" Australian
I think at that race ian didn't bring something new to his team he just came back after being overtaken by Garry but no matter how you slice it, he's the best freestyle swimmer of all time
Even though I was only 7 at the time, I was so happy and cheering on for the Aussie to get it done, I don't know why but I loved watching Michael Klim, I had a fascination with him not having to wear a swim cap because he was bald haha. Plus Thorpy seemed so kool to me as a kid, wearing a different suit to everyone.
Thorpedo propelled and delivered powerful blows against The USA... Now The Terminator, Titmus, is the one unleashing Aussie fury now. If you look at the population of The US in comparison to Australia....per capita were doing much better, than some ppl actually realise. ❤️

@@wonjubhoy Disappointingly, Australia trended with this thing of dubbing swimmers boastful nicknames, 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' and so on, only to disappoint at proceeding Olympics. I suspect this is why there was none of that for Tokyo.
As awesome as this race was, don’t the rules state that all swimmers must stay in the water until all swimmers have finished the race? Because Thorpe got out of the pool before the last bloke did. Asking purely out of curiosity because I know that’s a rule now, but don’t know if it was back then

Bloody hell, never realised he was so young! I know swimmers peak early but he was doing all this in his teens and basically retired before he was 25. Also, the bloke really can't tell a story. :-/
Gary Hall Jr. DID NOT say that they would "smash the Australian team like guitars", that was a quote taken out of context by the Australian media. The fact that so many Australians continue to hang on to this myth is indicative of a deep-seated inferiority complex.
Darren Adams Gary was the first one to congratulate the Aussies....that’s not exactly arrogance. And even though he nearly got thorpe at the end, his body was in a state of ketoacidosis during that race. That’s a damn heroic swim he pulled off.
Darren Adams no, just some good natured, pre race gamesmanship. Which was followed by a genuine expression of congratulations in defeat (and Hall winning the 50m gold...and the medley relay gold with I believe hypoglycaemia that time...so even if he were to have truly had Deep Feelings about Aussie-smashing, I’d still not exactly call it “unwarranted” confidence on his behalf, given that level of talent). Maybe the problem is we just don’t see enough athletes in the country who are both confident enough to talk a big game and humble enough to be gracious in defeat. Heck, we don’t even see confident ones...
@@crystaldoherty8791 I hear ya, but it's not a good look. Thorpey was pretty good and pretty confident. But he never made any such bold and over-confident claims or predictions. So whilst Hall is probably a good guy, and Thorpey even said he was, that was a silly, over-confident thing to say. Self-confidence is one thing. Being arrogant and disrespectful is another. I've been to the US a couple of times and for the most part, the people were great. And I had the time of my life. But when you see the way some, not all, American athletes carry on when they win something, well then you can see why American sportspeople have a reputation a being boorish, over the top and without much humility. It isn't fair to brand all of them like that of course. Michael Phelps was the best ever, and he wasn't like that to my knowledge. Like I said, I had a ball in the US and would love to go back one day.
