Director - or whoever decided to put this song at the end of the film "Weekend" is genius! After having watched the film, it crushes you completely! John Grant's a genius anyway, for composing & performing such a masterpiece!
Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows What are those blue remembered hills What spires, what farms are those? That is the land of lost content I see it shining plain The happy highways where I went And cannot come again AE Housman
John had this to say about the track: 'Marz was a sweet shop from my childhood. It's now empty and for sale. But I got to visit beforehand, and the woman who served me as a child was still there. They still made all their own candies and ice cream. In the song, I list all the names of the sundaes, and drinks like Green River. The song is about the gateway back to childhood and innocence, before things have become complicated.' the owner's name was Marzetti or some such-hence song name.
I have listened to this song many times and the lyrical quality is just magical. True musicians don't know where the inspiration comes from, just accepting they are the conduit to the listeners.Who would have thought that some genius could link all the ice-cream names so lyrically and so musically? Brilliant. Midlake are pretty useful too! John Grant is an international treasure.
Bittersweet strawberry, marshmallow, butterscotch Polar bear, cashew, dixieland, phosphate, chocolate Lime, tutti frutti, special raspberry, leave it to me Three grace, scotch lassie, cherry smash, lemon freeze I wanna go to Marz Where green rivers flow And your sweet sixteen is waiting for you after the show I wanna go to Marz You'll meet the Gold Dust Twins tonight You'll get your heart's desire, I will meet you under the lights Golden champagne, juicy grapefruit, lucky Monday High-school football, hot fudge, buffalo, tulip sundae Almond caramel frappé, pineapple, root beer Black and white, Big apple, Henry Ford, sweet heart, maple tear I wanna go to Marz Where green rivers flow And your sweet sixteen is waiting for you after the show I wanna go to Marz You'll meet the Gold Dust Twins tonight You'll get your heart's desire, I will meet you under the lights...
This song fits the movie (Weekend) so perfectly, it's disturbing. A melancholy, heartbreaking song for a melancholy, heartbreaking movie, with a gutwrenchingly sad ending. Both are amazing.
I've always liked this song, but I didn't fully understand it until I read cbankie's description -- and I love it even more now that I actually get it!
Oh my dear. This song is a masterpiece, but this music video? How incredible surrealistic, painful and beautiful it is. It takes the song to a new level of beauty, further than I would have thought possible.
NEVER heard of Weekend, although I'm glad John's music is finally being appreciated (I hope it's a good movie!!) I bought this album in 2010 when it first came out (before it was MOJO No.1 album of the year), and I still play it regularly, in my times of feeling down his lyrics remind me that it could be worse...
My mum is 89. Throughout her life pudding, sweetie, cakes and chocs have representec eras and parts of her life . She would of loved to visit Mart. Mu mum also adores John and this song makes her cry with memories .But its the actual song that wins her over . Lemon sherbats Space invaders Lemon cake Lindt pistachio CHoc Fishfood Sunday Knickerbockerglory Whipped cream
Oh, this is a perfect music confection: a dash of rufus wainwright tartness in the stanza balanced by just the right amount of sugar in the melody of the chorus, all over a light rippling piano sauce.
Weekend... Love that movie... Its because of that movie, I am now a John Grant fan... I know that it seemed sad for an ending but I would like to believe that they stay together... love that movie!!!
Prachtig, warm, ontroerend, melancholisch nummer. Heerlijk. Frisse herfstavond met goed glas wijn terwijl de wind om he thuis waait. Vallende bladeren, de eerste sneeuwvlokken. Dat is gelukzaligheid
I love the song, both the music & lyrics; the interpretation in the video here not so much. The emotions evoked by the song fit perfectly with the ending of the film Weekend! And that had nothing to do with the denial of mortality. Not that the interpretation here is wrong as an interpretation, but it substitutes Candyland for the poignancy of real life & the impermanence of all things.
So I'm listening to this amazing song again, scroll down to the comments, and it's you! For a second I thought I was on stillsoundlyawake haha :) I guess I should watch Weekend, since everyone seems to be talking about it.
***** Yes, the trustees occasionally let me wander away from the farm. *Weekend* is an engrossing, beautifully acted, well-scripted film. When they play "I Wanna Go to Marz" with the end credits, it will walk all over your heart.
I disagree with the video not being appropriate. The whole song is about loss and nostalgia. The woman dies and then goes to Candyland - which, in the end, is actually hellish. It understands to the pull of nostalgia and its pitfalls.
I heard this song the other night on a BBC Scotland showing of "Seven Songs for Long Life". It's about exploring changing relationships with death. Great show, great song. The posts led me to check out the movie "Weekend", which I have not viewed as yet.
Artistry: proof via this man that it is not bound by narrowed convictions (as to sexism, and other constrictions of 'those moral ones) and by the video that it is freedom to interpret even the words of the artist... an enjoyable song with a video that challenges... thanks for the artistry
John is an amazing man who himself was brought back from the brinks of self destruction and suicide after the 'failure' of The Czars, I have met him a few times and he does not 'wallow' in the slightest, he talks about his life in a solemn way, but in a way you can see that it made him stronger...
I didn't really cried out, but my heart is completely broken, I repeat the movie the following 2 days, and love the song and its melody pop out at the perfect moment, and the title of the movie is appearing then, damn sad!
I haven't seen the film, but this is by far the best song I've heard in many a year. In case you're wondering I'm 72.
Director - or whoever decided to put this song at the end of the film "Weekend" is genius!
After having watched the film, it crushes you completely!
John Grant's a genius anyway, for composing & performing such a masterpiece!
the song is about the childhood that's gone and can never be returned.
I'm crying in my soul and I'm a grown, quite tough, man.
Thank you,John!

Weekend brought me here. I have never cried this much. Such a lovely song.

Same here, tonight! My phone couldnt recognise it, took 7 tries! Amazing song!
This song fits the movie (Weekend) so perfectly, it's disturbing. A melancholy, heartbreaking song for a melancholy, heartbreaking movie, with a gutwrenchingly sad ending. Both are amazing.
Weekend is such a beautiful movie, one of the best I've seen in a long time, but I cried so much at the ending... heartbreakingly beautiful :(
"Weekend" brough me here too
I've always liked this song, but I didn't fully understand it until I read cbankie's description -- and I love it even more now that I actually get it!
that movie was wonderful, and made me fall in love with this song...
Oh my dear. This song is a masterpiece, but this music video? How incredible surrealistic, painful and beautiful it is. It takes the song to a new level of beauty, further than I would have thought possible.

Oh, this is a perfect music confection: a dash of rufus wainwright tartness in the stanza balanced by just the right amount of sugar in the melody of the chorus, all over a light rippling piano sauce.

Ive just realised that a good porptin of this video was filmed in the UK (which I was not expecting at all!)
i just love it
More brilliance from John Grant. What a talent
A friend turned me on to John Grant.
I think he sounds like a modery-day Harry Nilsson - and that, ladies and germs, is a very high compliment!
Prachtig, warm, ontroerend, melancholisch nummer. Heerlijk. Frisse herfstavond met goed glas wijn terwijl de wind om he thuis waait. Vallende bladeren, de eerste sneeuwvlokken. Dat is gelukzaligheid
I think I understand this song and its meaning almost completely now or at least most of it and I only like it so much more
weekend.. this movie really spoke to me
God bless Andy. We had a brief moment in time and I'll never forget you. Thank you for looking for me. See you in another life xxxxx
i get absolute chills when the piano starts!

Esa canción apareció en la película Weekend, muy buena.
Perfect! I have no words to say nothing more.
John is an amazing man who himself was brought back from the brinks of self destruction and suicide after the 'failure' of The Czars, I have met him a few times and he does not 'wallow' in the slightest, he talks about his life in a solemn way, but in a way you can see that it made him stronger...
