Fondateur en 1933 de la Société contemporaine de musique bulgare, devenue l'Union des compositeurs bulgares, Pancho Vladigerov est l'auteur d'une œuvre abondante d'esprit romantique et nationaliste. A Sofia, il apprit à composer avec Dobri Christov, à Berlin ce fut avec Paul Juon puis avec Friedrich Gernsheim et Georg Schumann. Après avoir remporté à deux reprises le Prix Mendelssohn de l'Academie des Künste (1918 et 1920), il retourna à Sofia où il devint un pédagogue recherché qui forma tous les grands compositeurs bulgares de la génération suivante ainsi que bon nombre de pianistes, dont Alexis Weissenberg. Auteur de l'opéra « Tsar Kaloyan » (1936), de cinq concertos pour piano qu'il interpréta lui-même dans le monde entier et qui imposèrent le "style bulgare" (que le cinéma hollywoodien adaptera dans les Années 40 et 50 en "short concertos" romantiques), Pancho Vladigerov a aussi écrit une « Légende symphonique » (1919), deux concertos pour violons (1921 et 1968), la rhapsodie bulgare « Vardar » (1928), une « Suite Scandinave » (1934) pour orchestre, les ouvertures « Terre » (1933) et « Le Neuf Septembre » (1949) ainsi qu'une symphonie en 1939 et une seconde en 1949. Mais son apport le plus important reste les cinq concertos pour piano, notamment les trois premiers, d'un romantisme exacerbé.
