With six and a half weeks to go until the Tokyo Olympic Games Marathon, Stephen Scullion is putting in the hard yards in Flagstaff, Arizona.
We joined him for a double training day: a 12 mile controlled tempo run in the morning (including lactate testing) and 5x300m on the track in the evening.

Nothing fancy or flashy. Quality work day in and day out for months. This is what gets you fit.
as a european, I appreciate the speed and distance conversions
Only in flagstaff is it normal for some Irish dude to take his lactate in your front lawn.
Maybe Boulder
And park city
🤣
hahahahahha
This man…. Just dropping knowledge bomb after knowledge bomb
This guy seems dope. Really cool vibes I'm getting from him. I also love seeing more "built" professional runners. It makes me feel more confident that I can run fast, when I don't look super thin.
@Iaros B. Im going to turn myself into spaghetti for the 1 Mile WR
love this guy. he is direct not over talking and shines insight into the daily disciplines required to perform at top levels
Great insight! Very likeable guy.
The content on this channel is just amazing. Keep up the good work 👍
You're killing it dude. This is the kind of stuff that will boost our sport
Can we all admire Matt’s pacing skills on the BIKE?! Very impressive!
I'm not on other social media platforms. And i rarely comment on youtube. But I wanted to find some way to let you know that you are an inspiration. What you have achieved already is beyond belief. Look after yourself. You've got a lot of support out there, I hope you feel that. From a fellow runner.
This one is great. Would like to see more from him! Interesting guy. Breaks it down well.
I hadn't heard of him but this video made me a fan.
God I love these videos.
Also nasty physique, guy is built out of rebar
Absolutely fantastic video. Will be looking out for you at the Olympics and cheering you on. Would love to see more videos like this!
Really enjoying the content on this channel, thank you @Sweat Elite - Training Sessions for delivering. Fascinating to get a closer look and understanding of how these top athletes build themselves up to big events.
this human being looks great, very healthy
Another amazing video - Thank you
That was amazing. I love Scully so to see him just smashing out a session; kudos to the camera work regardless of the audio interference.
Thanks for the amazing content!!
Such a cool dude and what a brilliant workout you’ve documented for us. I’m more and more obsessed with this channel with each video - sincerely, a horrible runner who is drawing so much motivation from seeing elite athletes do amazing workouts.
this is by far the best channel nowadays....keep uploading those videos guys..
hate when garmin says i’m detraining, i could be in peak training and it’ll hit me with that 💀🤣
8 minutes: I just love the relationship, honest conversation between the video guy & Stephen
This is such a cool channel. Super raw content. Love to get to know these athletes just a little.
Phenomenal content. I just became a huge Scullion fan.
Stephen is such a knowledgeable guy and so honest and humble 👌🏻
He looks so damn smooth on those 300s
he does, definitely a huge benefit to have a bike pacemaker right next to u
Go Stephen, we're all rooting for you back home!!
He has his training down to a science. Really cool to see.
Excellent profile on Scullion. Brilliant comments here
Stephen,
Look forward to some new content! Great to see you’re posting some great results post-Olympics...👍🏃🏻♂️
Such a smooth form....!!! Top notch mentality
Great vid !
Good running pose, thank you for the video!
Subscribers going up fast!
Hey Stephen, I don't know if you'll read this but you seem like a top guy, I'll be rooting for you in the Olympics.
Amazing jobs
Everyone loves scully 👌
I like the idea of adding speed reps on the same day as a longer hard workout for people who train at altitude.
Usually I do them on separate days, but his method lets you only focus more on recovery on your easy days.
Gold
bad ass!
I want #P4P rankings, this guys has got to be up there!
i really do hate how easy and graceful those 300's looked hahaha I definitely don't look like that :D
professional running is hard!
His perspective has changed since his time at mcneese state where he just wanted to hammer everything
Good runner, i like his car.
W
Anyone know what the whites shoes are that he’s using for the 300’s?
Apologising for a little microphone issues while delivering top quality content for free 😂 love this channel!
Wow
Very handsome guy!
What shoes is he wearing on the 300s?
here early
would b interesting to know if he does all his sessions solo or
Follow @lionscull on Instagram and you will see
10:37 he’s running in Vaporfly?
@PATRICK PIGG can you reiterate for us not on IG
@PATRICK PIGG 🙇♂️
Only if I had that chance I would have
can you guys go to kenya/north africa one day and film some sessions?
What kind of budget do you think these guys are working on 😂. I'm already surprised enough that they can afford to travel the US
His buddy is in Kenya and filmed a video with Julien Wanders group.
Best running content out there rn. Seth Demoor next?
We want .every day workout..and weekly
Can you get him on again for a rebate on the audio?
Which lactic meter did he use?
I asked this on one of his UA-cam videos and he linked to this device. I think it is still the same one www.habdirect.co.uk/product/lactate-pro-2/
Lugar lindo para treinar. May neme is Fábio. Brasil
Shreddy McShredderson. F*!k yes.
Second 🥈 common
Detraining 😆
Can someone explain what measuring your lactate does? 😂
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactate_threshold
How do you become lean like he is ,not skinny fat as a runner
Correct macronutrient and calorie intake, a well rounded strength program and sleep.
He has a UA-cam channel, he does gym work too
Lift heavy, eat at or slightly over maintenance cals and keep protein high
run more, lift a little.
didn't know marathoners were built like superheroes
25:07 Lol at Garmin. Whoever wrote their Training Status algorithm is a clown.
No acknowledgment of a base building phase. No option to use anything other than 7-day microcycles. 60 min recovery/easy runs are considered “unproductive” the day after a hard effort.
It’s truly amazing. It’s a company full of athletes yet they seemingly don’t know the basics of training.
what are the all black shoes that Stephen is wearing for the road miles?
Nike next % he coloured them in black
@@John_Wood_ there is pictures from the antrim coast half the under neath of the black shoes was a nike logo they are done in black with a marker
What does he do to lose muscle?
Eat less carbs at night time. + training more miles
@@axleblaze123 no. Carbs are nothing to do with it. Simply eat less calories than you burn
ممكن تشرح ترجمه بل عربي
Hi, does anyone else use a lactate tester, just wondering as I dont think I know of any non elite runners who use them.
I can fully understand why an elite would, but what about the rest of us mortals.
Certainly tempting to buy one but not the cheap.
I have a friend who has one and we mess with it from time to time. Any sort of added data is only going to be beneficial for you, from elite to amateur. It’s what you do with it and how you use it that matters.
We use it to measure threshold workouts on the track. Super useful info for dialing your hard efforts in. Do you NEED it? Probably not but can it help your training be more effective? Most certainly.
Matthew Hughes is Canadian lol
The wind noise sucks.
Is that a Northern Ireland accent ?? 🤔
Scully is confused. Sometimes he sounds more like a dubliner...
25:58... we found out 😔
but he just switched to Vaporflys!
His contract with Under Armour has been suspended. He himself posted this on his personal blog so he can wear whatever he likes.
@@djcahill his IG literally says "Professional runner for @underarmour"
@@djcahill think it was suspended because of this video.
Doesn’t he have a UA-cam channel
Yes and it was shaping up great but the podcast is the place to be!
He is the most open and transparent athlete in the game imho!
@@krruns4165 what’s the name of the podcast?
@@isaacstamper7798 stephen scullions Road to Tokyo 2020
لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله الله
Taking at 5:35 pace lol
shout out the camera man for running the workout with a camera
Brilliant content, Matt! Keep the good work! Whоever did not subscribe, do it! Let's support him to give us more content like that!
Most people have a ego problem with everything
He’s just withdrawn. Poor guy.
He changed his mind - he's going to Tokyo after all.
Seriously?
That's brilliant news!
@@dublinsouls Listen to his podcast (Road to Tokyo) on Spotify, latest episode. Hear it in his own words. He's unusually candid and brave about. I'm rooting for him now.
I feel like when I run a lot my sex drive diminishes for a bit. Anyone agree?
Running can decrease testosterone yes.
Oh dear you need to get a proper finger pricker jigger so the finger pricks don't hurt do much. Also take some sugar with you so you don't have a hypo out there 😬
Is he an Under Armour athlete?
So why does he wear Nike shoes?
I think he stated on Instagram he is a free agent now
Lots of athletes wear other brand shoes when an elite athlete because their shoe company doesn’t have good enough race shoes that will let an athlete compete with other athletes
@@diarmuidhanna9118 for example?
@@hernanagustin_uy_it ollie hoare, geordie beamish, nick Willis etc
@@adamede9316 Yes.
I remember now.
Thompson at the 2021 British Olympic Marathon Trials.
Why not do the workouts together just so much stimulus throughout the day that is not needed.
It would need more recovery time
@@Chedda_chaser I just totally disagree if he did that workout in Sedona he’d be fine doing it all at once!!
@@Clanlesscavgaming probably, I don’t really know what I’m talking about but it’s probably not worth it to go over board right before the Olympics
Sad he didn't go to Tokyo. He needs to get rid of his demons.
after all that training, DNF in olympic marathon???
It was brutal out there, he wasn’t the only one who DNF. Onto the next one!
A slightly late measurement of 7.0 lactate value, to call this a controlled tempo run is absurd.
To be fair he did explain (I think) that it was higher than marathon effort at the end of the workout (which is what he wanted) and that he can hold 4 or 5.5mmol for marathon...
@@krruns4165 It was more criticism against the ones writing the description on on the video, rather than the athlete :)
The wind was kinda annoying
Dead cat for microphone please!
