27:20 what is meant by the fun with metaphors? seems like subtlety throwing shade on good concepts

Hi! When you "sort by stat" what stat is this referring to? In the last videos we looked at multiple statistical interpretations (MI, T-score, LL, etc.) so I'm not sure.

Hi! The AntConc collocate tool gives you MI values.

Hi Martin, Forgive me for my naive question but I am new in the field. What tools can be used in Antconc for stylistic analysis. I will use leech and short list for my work.

Hi Martin, I'm a big fan of your videos. I'm new to corpora and I have a quick question about how I would compare conceptual metaphors between two databases. Should I just manually screen the database make notes on when a certain conceptual metaphor occurs ARGUMENT IS WAR for example, add up all their frequencies under the metaphor ARGUMENT IS WAR then do the same with the other database then compare the results? Any advice would be highly appreciated! Kind regards

Hi Jon! There are many approaches that you could take, but if I were to compare metaphor usage across two corpora, I'd start with the source domain and look for the same expression or set of expressions in the two corpora, so that you can compare their frequencies side by side. To stay with your example of ARGUMENT IS WAR, a common expression for harsh criticism is "tear NP to shreds/pieces/bits". Let's say you have a corpus of internet blogs and a corpus of newspaper language, you'll easily find that this metaphorical expression is more typical of the informal language you find in blogs.

so i had this metaphor for me exploring life, and its basically a swimmer in the sea who i have no control over and there is a basket tied to his legs that is me, i cannot control the swimmer but i can sway the basket to catch fish as the swimmer swims, this brings me to the searcher and the experiencer, since we all have some experience and are searching for others , how does this relationship function within an individual? can we track it by the way a metaphor representing something evolves in a persons life? because for me the swimmer used to be a butterfly, it had no agency, just being dragged along by observation(, the basket added a sense of agency to it and my metaphor evolved ( observation was the 1st pillar through the butterfly, observation was also the search, just looking at things, which contributed to a lot of experience which in turn changed my metaphor swimmer with basket , the basket being the new pillar of agency, being able to do something with your observations, and this change in metaphor has pushed me towards finding my Vocation , i am curious to see how this changes again

That's extremely interesting. Do you know if this metaphor is grounded in your culture? Or is it something that is specific to your individual life journey? What it has in common with other metaphors for life is that it involves movement through space.

@@MartinHilpert so i used to love swimming when i was a kid ( 10 years old), unfortunately i developed an ear drum issue and i wasn't allowed to swim anymore, which sucked, i would say its specific to my life

39:00 this is a strange meaning for 'living'. growing is to expand in size by a natural process, which chemicals do. you could describe all of what humans do as a chemical process, and lump the un-explainable into supernatural. that fully-chemical model of a human would be considered alive. life includes growing things and moving things. if you rule out chemicals as growing, you still have the movement.
it seems arbitrary to pick a level of heirarchy (the whole human) and declare that alive, whilst also ruling out the life of all the smaller parts that make up that object. it seems fair to describe fear as alive.
