Question: One of my college professors mentioned once that If we could somehow bring a tiny piece of a neutron star back to Earth and drop it. Given its immense density it would fall right through Earth and come out the other side - and then the Earth’s gravity would pull it back and it would go through Earth again and the process will continue to repeat. (Could this be true?)
Yes, he’s describing simple harmonic motion. But, due to friction and its avatars, the oscillation would be dampened, with the center of the Earth and the neutron star becoming aligned.
The age of information is what allowed us to accelerate so fast. Better technology allowed us to share our knowledge with each other more easily, which allows us to make better technology. It's a snowball effect. Just 15 years ago the hundreds of thousands of us watching this video would not be able to watch and learn from videos like this. The internet is a codex of human history filled with knowledge that will raise young geniuses across the globe into positions able to positively effect our society. These are indeed great times.

@Joe Chang Light travels through the vacuum at the speed of light. Gravity does too. If something is a light year away, it will take a year for its light and gravitational waves to get here too. I am pretty sure u are the same Joe Chang you said light travels instantaneously throughout the vacuum, but that makes no sense. IF light traveled through emptiness at infinite speeds, why is there cosmological redshift? Why can we prove special relativity is right? How come light doesn't simply go from one electron to the next instantaneously through the empty space. Therefore making the speed of light anywhere infinity. Does this mean photons don't exist as implying infinite speed requires infinite momentum and therefore a world shredded apart? Why should light have wavelengths if they travel instantly across space? Should color not exist? I am nearly 100% sure you are the same Joe Chang and you still use propaganda to spread your infinite speed stuff. Imagine a world where something a million miles away comes at the same time as something an inch away. You are going back on centuries of science buddy with no proof.
@Joe Chang Why should I believe you? The reason you don't see light passing through a vacuum is that there is no scattering due to the lack of particles to interact with. It just travels in a straight line with no interference until it hits the detector. And obviously, they already do it in a vacuum. It is called the large hadron collider (the worlds largest vacuum chamber ). It is as empty as interstellar space (emptier than space in the solar system, literally the space in between solar systems) Also, we already did the double slit experiment in a vacuum. Also, why does it take time for light to travel from the Earth to the Moon and back when we shoot lasers on reflectors placed on it. There I just dismantled your whole argument (again). Also, why do you think you're the only one who has ever thought about how the world should be. There were masses before you and there will be masses after you hungry to make up a false reality.
@Joe Chang In response to your first response: How come we have literally any technology to even discuss this online? Quantum Mechanics. How come we have GPS that is almost always accurate? General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. How come we have fission reactors? Quantum Mechanics. How come you don't understand any of it? Cause you have been indoctrinated into this false belief and make up different beliefs to be different. You literally hold all the opposite beliefs just to be different think you know because you believe it works. Scientists actually experiment and use mathematics instead of just fantasizing about being a god. The poor soul goes their whole life without understanding. I'm sorry.
I think that decreased slightly, most stuff we get this day are things that use technology invented in 1600’s, 1700’s, 1800’s and 1900’s. sure making discoveries now but gets harder and harder to find something new, sure we eventually have cleaner energy, get other planets and get better understanding of different environments in solar system. Until now their lots things that has not been looked as economical beneficial, climate change will change focus, and maybe take technology in different and new directions. So maybe you are right make it will increase a bit.
Russell, having read many of the comments, you impressed a lot of people viewing this episode, especially with your trip to the observatory in Chile. And I for one concluded your interest in cosmology is genuine when you spouted the term "retrograde" to describe the spin of Uranus, even before NDT did! Thanks for peppering the episode with your patent one-liners, but still hanging in there for the big questions, like how do you get something from nothing... Classic! PS. I'm a fellow Torontonian (Markham)!
Hi Neil, because the Polish Nation was mentioned on this episode :) I feel responsible for giving some feedback. I love your shows 😍, You have teached me a lot and had blown my mind not once for what I thank you greatly! Hope will visit US one day I Would be honoured to shake your hand . Best wishes! 🌞
I don't know if you actually read any of these comments Neal but I absolutely love your show. There was a question asked by your questioner as to what was the most important scientific discovery of time. You of course answered EinsteIn, and correctly so. Personally I think you should have followed up with R.P. Feynman ( QED ). Then the conservation started back from there 1900, 1800, etc. I would have next had to mention Issac Newton and the question once asked him..." how is it that you see so much further than other men ? ". His answer, so clear, so true and so self diminishing . . . . " If I see further than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of giants ".... WOW what a classic....
I love these two guys so much, one gave me a lot of laughs among the past years, and the other gave us all huge answers to huge questions and in style.. These are two great great men Love and respect from Jordan
I think the answer to Harry's question "What does Neil think was the single most important "discovery" in the history of "physics" and Neil answered "E=MCC", which I thought was more derivative than necessary and should have been more focused on F=MA and F = G (m1m2)/ R2. and its concentration on what "Gravity" is and the apple falling on Newton's head. First things first. First came Newtons discovery of gravity and only then came Einsteins discovery of the relationships between Energy, mass, and the speed of light. I'm not trying to take away from anybody but temporal considerations are meaningful and relevant. Keep up the good work. Thank you. (Btw can I be a guest?)
2020 had nothing to do with asteroids, and was not near as horrible as people tried to say. The ONLY reason it was percieved as such is bc people with low IQ bought into the hype and narrative that the media and governments pushed down your throats. For those of us that actually think for ourselves instead of letting those entities think for us, it was just another year. Wake up already ffs.
How do you use astrophysics (or physics in general) in your everyday life?
While driving, I accelerate at the bottom of a valley between two hills, and coast over the top. This was always reminiscent of how it is more efficient for a spacecraft to accelerate at perigee, when it is moving fastest. I'm curious if this is actually a more efficient way to drive.

Thank you so much for your work. I love learning new things like this and you make it fun... thank you
Mandatory Uranus joke. Apologies in advance:
Science: "Uranus got slammed hard, which explains it's axis"
General Public: "lol, he said Uranus got slammed hard"
New Tinder line: "I'll slam uranus so hard, it'll change your axis"
Lmfaoo!
"The" and "Rapist" are completely different words but if you combine them, you get "Therapist"
"a" "nobody" is the same when you make a comment that relies on a smear of a woman being handshaked another having her tattoo looked at and an estranged woman with a drunken memory, still makes you Anobody

Lmao I see what you did there 😂
Love Neil because he's never condescending.
This episode was great! Bring Russell back
Good one, great combination, get Russell back.
Good stuff. Excellent partner for today too. Russell is really good.
Cheers!
Love seeing Russell on Startalk with Neil... gotta have him back!!!!!
Me: Man, haven't seen any of Russell's stuff in a long time hope he's working on something new.
Russell: Everyday astrophysics with Neil deGrasse Tyson for 50 minutes.
It is called the large hadron collider (the worlds largest vacuum chamber
). It is as empty as interstellar space (emptier than space in the solar system, literally the space in between solar systems)
Also, we already did the double slit experiment in a vacuum.
@Joe Chang In response to your first response:
How come we have literally any technology to even discuss this online?
Quantum Mechanics.
How come we have GPS that is almost always accurate?
General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.
How come we have fission reactors?
Quantum Mechanics.
How come you don't understand any of it?
Cause you have been indoctrinated into this false belief and make up different beliefs to be different. You literally hold all the opposite beliefs just to be different think you know because you believe it works.
Scientists actually experiment and use mathematics instead of just fantasizing about being a god.
The poor soul goes their whole life without understanding. I'm sorry.
I think the frequency of discoveries increased when we started issuing patents. They are quite the incentive.
No, it had nothing to do with that. The exponential growth rate merely kicked in, as it does with everything.
my favorite people together
This was 4 years ago..
Bring him back as a guest!!!
I could tell from the thumbnail that this is gonna be a good pairing
what changed from 1600 to now ? Geometric progression (compounding)

Hi Neil, because the Polish Nation was mentioned on this episode :) I feel responsible for giving some feedback.
I love your shows 😍,
You have teached me a lot and had blown my mind not once for what I thank you greatly!
Hope will visit US one day
I Would be honoured to shake your hand .

These are two great great men

Love the Smif-n-Wesson hoody!

Russell Peters is one of the best. Same goes for DR.NDGT...like anyone doesn't know. every time it's QUALITY.
I just *intellectually* freaked out, then i said, "DAMN!"
It is a pleasure to hear Dr. Tyson.
No idea RP was so into science, so casual about it and a great co host! I would love to see A lot more of him on the channel!
Russell: “The world needs laughs before the asteroid hits us”
Us watching in 2020:
2020 had nothing to do with asteroids, and was not near as horrible as people tried to say. The ONLY reason it was percieved as such is bc people with low IQ bought into the hype and narrative that the media and governments pushed down your throats. For those of us that actually think for ourselves instead of letting those entities think for us, it was just another year. Wake up already ffs.
