Welcome to the December 2023 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

Huge fan of your channel Sean, I have been doing a marathon of your channel for the past few weeks :) Was lot of fun.
PS : Its very very difficult to please everyone on the internet. It can also be very difficult to get a real feedback because some people out there are very very sad and angry in life, and what they do to feel better about themselves is create a large amounts of UA-cam accounts and post negative comments all over the place. They upvote their own comments, downvote others, and flood the comment section of bad comments.
Bad comments have to be taken with a pinch a salt, especially when they are very immature comments. Its very likely coming from 1 or 2 people alone but you feel like 15 people are mad at ya. Moral of the story : Keep doing what you do, you are awesome.

I know it’s hard to not be affected by other’s rude or mean comments. But don’t sweat them. You can’t make everyone happy all the time. Follow what you think because you are a brilliant thinker and exceptional at explaining challenging ideas. You are great. People’s quick, rude, mean, and small minded comments are just them being asses and are worthless. They probably have issues in their own lives. Thoughtful people don’t behave like that. Can’t let their negativity phase or affect you and suppress your awesome knowledge and positivity. I thank you for all you do. Been enjoying watching and listening to your videos, interviews, and podcasts for years. Don’t sweat the haters. Haters gonna hate. It’s them not you. Keep doing you, you are great.

First “time” I listened to you Sean and as you’re talking about time travel I thought I’d share my personal experiences.
My understanding of time and space is everything is happening at the same time, now, and space is an illusion, everything is here. Here and now.
How this happens. We live in a multi dimensional, multiverse.
This is how we get those Deja vu experiences only mine are of complete streets either changing shape and numbers or just not being there.
Multiple dimensions exist in the same moment making it possible to move between them and what we do in “this” dimension effect what we perceive as the present, past and future.
As for multiverses, they too occupy the same place and time and are constantly moving through each other and this is how a universe is created, with a conscious act.
I have and am having many occurrences that used to leave me so confused but I’m starting to understand that everything is One thing and if we leave quantum physics and consciousness out of our attempts to understand anything, it’s like trying to bake a cake with half the ingredients. 🌟

In the future our ability to both capture and store energy will improve dramatically.
Anyone who excercises will provide energy to the grid.
Not just on treadmills or in gyms but in every day life.
Our clothes will store the energy we expend and (later) send it to the grid!
It seems so minor and inconsequencial but exponentially it has a shocking net result.
So I present the future of wearables to you ladies and gentlemen...
Human energy returned to the grid. Cheers!

Time Travel even one second!!!! It would leave you in the middle of space... it needs to include space travel to offset the time travel correctly. The space we occupy at any given second/minute/hour... year is at a different place in space. Our tiny planet flies through space at many many km/s because of our travel around the galaxy, and our galaxy through space etc... even a microsecond could put you inside the Earth...
Time travel is tied to spacetime, and that's not your Uncle Albert's good ol spacetime either. ☮💜

Not only that, but also the loss/altering of every atom, in our daily lives we alter a lot of materials, the many different states our food goes through, the air we breathe is mixed with all kinds of particles, it all moves around freely and organically.
Not to mention the other natural processes like the trajectory of light, the deflection of it etc., it is all connected to the same "time" that permiates through space, despite everything moving at its own pace (like our time on Earth would be different than time on Mars).
So, it never made sense to me to even consider backwards timetravel to be possible on a universal scale, ever since i was a kid.
I like timetravel in movie plots, but i don't think it will ever be a reality.
And the funny thing is, it doesn't matter which definition of time you use in this situation, because neither the clock will be going backwards, nor will entropy suddenly reverse entirely.
They might be able to do it locally, on an isolated object, but never on a universal scale, you'll need to know the size first and calculate all the trajectories of every single particle there was, otherwise it'll become a giant mess when put back together.
It's just not going to happen.

Good AMA today. I like your answer at about the 3hour point about "Shakespeare, the greatest author"... it reminded me of another scientist I like, Stephen Jay Gould, who wrote an essay along the same lines, about why early classical composers are great, as opposed to modern composers. As you say, once Shakespeare invented "comedy of errors" or the doomed lovers of "romeo and juliet" - they cannot be re-invented. But, on the other hand, I like Nikos Kazantzakis' novel "The Last Temptation" because it is an original re-interpretation of the role of Judas. The concept of genius is very interesting, and why we are drawn to it. Thanks.

Regarding the "problem" with x^2=4: I think this is based on a misunderstanding of the person who asked the question or a math teacher who didn't get across an important point.
This is what math teachers should tell you and as far as I can see they usually do: There is a profound difference between solving the equation x^2=4 and the number that can be referred to as sqrt(4). If you solve the equation for real numbers, you get two equally valid soutions, i.e. 2 and -2. However, if you ask what the number is that you get when you take the square root of 4, by convention you only use the positive number because otherwise you wouldn't have a well defined object "number that is the result of the operation of taking the square root of 4".

any use of a money/fiat/contract is in itself democratic. to take part in the exchange of goods or writs is itself democratic. to take them away is not. To derive rules on this function could also be seen as anti-democratic, money is a democratic ideal in itself. ☮💜

    • @Games_and_Music
      @Games_and_Music 2 місяці тому

And i would add to that, the money that we make is from doing honest labor, it should not be right to take control of what would be rightfully ours.
The control is brought in to fight crime, but yeah, sometimes their definition of a crime can differ from someone else's definition (like protesting for example).
Untracked or tracked money, it's both a slippery slope into something bad.
And it looks a bit ironic, when we see the very rich inflate their wealth to get more loans from banks, or deflate it when they have to pay taxes, but okay.

Though it's very incomplete, and also still uses complex numbers (p-adic numbers are only used to replace the reals), it may have been worth bringing up for a priority question about number systems in quantum mechanics.

It's well established that companies with a higher proportion of equity owned by workers have better market capitalization. It is also well established that companies that do not seek outside equity investment or provide competitive equity offers for officers have lower market capitalization.
Hence, co-ops who do not have any outside investment are expected to underperform. Also, companies who provide less equity to their workers than their competitors are also expected to underperform.
Thus, co-ops are bad because they dont have as much leverage to produce goods and services relative to market competitors who acquire equity investment from nonworkers. A complete economy based on such a principle would underperform a capitalist society leading to a lower degree of economic stability and security.
Individuals would also be unable to diversify their investments leading to a general incapacity to retain long term wealth. A co-op economy is fundamentally riskier than a well regulated capitalist economy.
Furthermore, if co-ops want to have access to loans, then they must interact with a money market. If there exists a money market, then there exists capitalism. If government is the only provider of loans, then that government must only borrow money internationally, adding further risk to the overall economy.

Your into commentary reminds me of my bachelors in philosophy, where you would frequently hear from fellow students "well, I don't believe that" or "he's so wrong and he thinks he so right" and such. Which really was a shame because it held people back from getting something out of all those texts. The same with not being able to have a discussion within science, because you're so focused on who's right and what you believe in.

Can some of the problems with the current Standard Model be solved by looking at ideas from Biology? If quarks have not been isolated and gluons have not been isolated, how do we know they are not parts of the same thing? The tentacles of an octopus and the body of an octopus are parts of the same creature. Is this a "beautiful idea” if it is true?
Is there an alternative interpretation of "Asymptotic Freedom"? What if Quarks are actually made up of twisted tubes which become physically entangled with two other twisted tubes to produce a proton? Instead of the Strong Force being mediated by the constant exchange of gluons, it would be mediated by the physical entanglement of these twisted tubes. When only two twisted tubules are entangled, a meson is produced which is unstable and rapidly unwinds (decays) into something else. A proton would be analogous to three twisted rubber bands becoming entangled and the "Quarks" would be the places where the tubes are tangled together. The behavior would be the same as rubber balls (representing the Quarks) connected with twisted rubber bands being separated from each other or placed closer together producing the exact same phenomenon as "Asymptotic Freedom" in protons and neutrons. The force would become greater as the balls are separated, but the force would become less if the balls were placed closer together. Therefore, the gluon is a synthetic particle (zero mass, zero charge) invented to explain the Strong Force. An artificial Christmas tree can hold the ornaments in place, but it is not a real tree.
What if we describe subatomic particles as spatial curvature, instead of trying to describe General Relativity as being mediated by particles? Fixing the Standard Model with more particles is like trying to mend a torn fishing net with small rubber balls, instead of a piece of twisted twine.
    Quantum Entangled Twisted Tubules:
“We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct.” Neils Bohr
(lecture on a theory of elementary particles given by Wolfgang Pauli in New York, c. 1957-8, in Scientific American vol. 199, no. 3, 1958)
The following is meant to be a generalized framework for an extension of Kaluza-Klein Theory. Does it agree with some aspects of the “Twistor Theory” of Roger Penrose, and the work of Eric Weinstein on “Geometric Unity”, and the work of Dr. Lisa Randall on the possibility of one extra spatial dimension? During the early history of mankind, the twisting of fibers was used to produce thread, and this thread was used to produce fabrics. The twist of the thread is locked up within these fabrics. Is matter made up of twisted 3D-4D structures which store spatial curvature that we describe as “particles"? Are the twist cycles the "quanta" of Quantum Mechanics?
When we draw a sine wave on a blackboard, we are representing spatial curvature. Does a photon transfer spatial curvature from one location to another? Wrap a piece of wire around a pencil and it can produce a 3D coil of wire, much like a spring. When viewed from the side it can look like a two-dimensional sine wave. You could coil the wire with either a right-hand twist, or with a left-hand twist. Could Planck's Constant be proportional to the twist cycles. A photon with a higher frequency has more energy. ( E=hf, More spatial curvature as the frequency increases = more Energy ). What if Quark/Gluons are actually made up of these twisted tubes which become entangled with other tubes to produce quarks where the tubes are entangled? (In the same way twisted electrical extension cords can become entangled.) Therefore, the gluons are a part of the quarks. Quarks cannot exist without gluons, and vice-versa. Mesons are made up of two entangled tubes (Quarks/Gluons), while protons and neutrons would be made up of three entangled tubes. (Quarks/Gluons) The "Color Charge" would be related to the XYZ coordinates (orientation) of entanglement. "Asymptotic Freedom", and "flux tubes" are logically based on this concept. The Dirac “belt trick” also reveals the concept of twist in the ½ spin of subatomic particles. If each twist cycle is proportional to h, we have identified the source of Quantum Mechanics as a consequence twist cycle geometry.
Modern physicists say the Strong Force is mediated by a constant exchange of Gluons. The diagrams produced by some modern physicists actually represent the Strong Force like a spring connecting the two quarks. Asymptotic Freedom acts like real springs. Their drawing is actually more correct than their theory and matches perfectly to what I am saying in this model. You cannot separate the Gluons from the Quarks because they are a part of the same thing. The Quarks are the places where the Gluons are entangled with each other.
Neutrinos would be made up of a twisted torus (like a twisted donut) within this model. The twist in the torus can either be Right-Hand or Left-Hand. Some twisted donuts can be larger than others, which can produce three different types of neutrinos. If a twisted tube winds up on one end and unwinds on the other end as it moves through space, this would help explain the “spin” of normal particles, and perhaps also the “Higgs Field”. However, if the end of the twisted tube joins to the other end of the twisted tube forming a twisted torus (neutrino), would this help explain “Parity Symmetry” violation in Beta Decay? Could the conversion of twist cycles to writhe cycles through the process of supercoiling help explain “neutrino oscillations”? Spatial curvature (mass) would be conserved, but the structure could change.
    =====================
Gravity is a result of a very small curvature imbalance within atoms. (This is why the force of gravity is so small.) Instead of attempting to explain matter as "particles", this concept attempts to explain matter more in the manner of our current understanding of the space-time curvature of gravity. If an electron has qualities of both a particle and a wave, it cannot be either one. It must be something else. Therefore, a "particle" is actually a structure which stores spatial curvature. Can an electron-positron pair (which are made up of opposite directions of twist) annihilate each other by unwinding into each other producing Gamma Ray photons?
Does an electron travel through space like a threaded nut traveling down a threaded rod, with each twist cycle proportional to Planck’s Constant? Does it wind up on one end, while unwinding on the other end? Is this related to the Higgs field? Does this help explain the strange ½ spin of many subatomic particles? Does the 720 degree rotation of a 1/2 spin particle require at least one extra dimension?
Alpha decay occurs when the two protons and two neutrons (which are bound together by entangled tubes), become un-entangled from the rest of the nucleons
. Beta decay occurs when the tube of a down quark/gluon in a neutron becomes overtwisted and breaks producing a twisted torus (neutrino) and an up quark, and the ejected electron. The production of the torus may help explain the “Symmetry Violation” in Beta Decay, because one end of the broken tube section is connected to the other end of the tube produced, like a snake eating its tail. The phenomenon of Supercoiling involving twist and writhe cycles may reveal how overtwisted quarks can produce these new particles. The conversion of twists into writhes, and vice-versa, is an interesting process, which is also found in DNA molecules. Could the production of multiple writhe cycles help explain the three generations of quarks and neutrinos? If the twist cycles increase, the writhe cycles would also have a tendency to increase.
Gamma photons are produced when a tube unwinds producing electromagnetic waves. ( Mass=1/Length )
The “Electric Charge” of electrons or positrons would be the result of one twist cycle being displayed at the 3D-4D surface interface of the particle. The physical entanglement of twisted tubes in quarks within protons and neutrons and mesons displays an overall external surface charge of an integer number. Because the neutrinos do not have open tube ends, (They are a twisted torus.) they have no overall electric charge.
Within this model a black hole could represent a quantum of gravity, because it is one cycle of spatial gravitational curvature. Therefore, instead of a graviton being a subatomic particle it could be considered to be a black hole. The overall gravitational attraction would be caused by a very tiny curvature imbalance within atoms.
In this model Alpha equals the compactification ratio within the twistor cone, which is approximately 1/137.
1= Hypertubule diameter at 4D interface
137= Cone’s larger end diameter at 3D interface where the photons are absorbed or emitted.
The 4D twisted Hypertubule gets longer or shorter as twisting or untwisting occurs. (720 degrees per twist cycle.)
How many neutrinos are left over from the Big Bang? They have a small mass, but they could be very large in number. Could this help explain Dark Matter?
Why did Paul Dirac use the twist in a belt to help explain particle spin? Is Dirac’s belt trick related to this model? Is the “Quantum” unit based on twist cycles?
I started out imagining a subatomic Einstein-Rosen Bridge whose internal surface is twisted with either a Right-Hand twist, or a Left-Hand twist producing a twisted 3D/4D membrane. This topological Soliton model grew out of that simple idea.

Are you aware of type A and type B personalities where the former are highly blinkered/focused and competitive whereas the latter are more laid back, interested in the whole picture; which seems to be you? I think this is worth bearing in mind when you move into areas outside your intellectual comfort zone and having to deal with type A experts/students.

I have questions and comments. Just not money for Patreon. For instance, with the latest AI episode, I feel AI is going to be made up of modules. So, the LLM are the human to AI interface module. Then you have a video game physics engine for modeling the world. Emotion modeler. etc etc lots and lots of pieces making one awesome AGI.

Just because the world is not deterministic does not mean you have free will. Sure there are quantum fluctuations which mean you can't determine the outcome but that still doesn't mean you have free will. You have no control over the outcome so how can free will have anything to do with it?

You are so right about Primer. Massively overrated. They handwave the whole "engineering a perfect moment" thing re the guy with the shotgun at the party and wtf happens with Granger and why ("something something recursion") & make the whole plot seem deep with obfuscatory techniques. The time machine approach is novel & interesting & a lot of the TT is logically sound but Carruth just couldn't handle the third act. Also agree that Time Bandits is not a true TT movie.

It suck people are being mean about disagreements. While I am disappointed in your AI take since I don't understand where you get the very tiny number for AI disaster from when most people I respect (not Yann LeCun) have that number at or above Russia roulette odds, it's no reason to get personal.

Hello sir, I have a question about consciousness.
You believe that consciousness is related to the brain and the brain is made of atoms and the fundamental nature of atoms is wave, then how can a wave give birth to consciousness?

    • @arseni12345
      @arseni12345 5 місяців тому +7

He does not think that brains give rise to consciousness, he thinks that certain brain activity just is mental activity, it is literally the same thing. In the same way as molecules of H2O don't give rise to water, they just are water. Nothing gives rise to itself. He is a physicalist, not a dualist. It can be problem for dualists to explain how matter can produce some other thing - the mind. But it is not problem for physicalists. (Of course physicalism has other problems, for example many people find hard to understand how mental events could be identical to events in the brain, but this is completely another story).
I will repeat that one more time. He thinks that your feel of thirst, your depression, your joy, etc. literally just are brain processes. They are not something additional. So the question "how brain activity B produced mental event M" does not arise. Brain activity B = mental event M. It does not make sense to ask "how brain activity B produced brain activity B". The only thing that physicalist, like Carrol, need to explain is how certain brain activity emerged. But there is already answer - evolutionary processes + abiogenesis at the beginning.

I agree, determinism is very attractive when you view the world from certain very narrow point of view. But it just breaks down when you think more about how you actually live in the world, what information and brain capacity has access to when making decisions.
