- To Violet, the Emerald Brooch is the Major himself. It is all she has left of her beloved Major. She treasures it more than life!
I get it how it may be unhealthy to hold on to a dearest beloved like Violet does. Plenty fish in the sea...forget the past...etc.,
However, let us consider Violet's past and context.
She has had no concept of mother, father, sister, brother, friend, boyfriend, husband or any loved ones...or even male, female.
Her baseline is a bond, a devotion, and love akin to that of Boss and Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2.
Thus I don't think it's fair to cast judgement on this "flaw" of hers.
She is in love with him and he is in love with her and I am in love with them❤

It cannot be called an unhealthy obsession. First, because Violet started from nothing before Gilbert took her with him. I think Violet sees Gilbert as the most important person in her life. Technically, if you lose a person you love what will you do? In reality, you can never be alone because you still have relatives or friends but in Violet's case she only has Gilbert... True that she became friends with Claude Hodgins and the others but before that she did not know emotions. As if she was an empty container. So it is understandable why she has this affection for Gilbert (tho unknown to her)

It’s unhealthy if you look at the big picture, but it’s the reason how Violet thrived to move forward to become a normal human woman with emotions. Although sadly enough, she had seen and lived in war, killed people cold heartedly, and finally realizing the depth of things by learning emotion and empathy, it’s tough for a young girl (although that’s what makes her a tough babe in the end of overcoming everything properly). Her not letting go of Gil (that is an unhealthy act by standards quoted she always believed he is alive somewhere even though everyone mentioned he is MIA aka bad news of no return aka dead) is her way of coping with things because she is driven with the “order” of live and to find out the meaning of love. Meaning he is her source of hope. She still has that military mindset. I’m not saying her clinging on to an idea of a person will stay permanent. After all, she was showing signs of acceptance of loss and that is a humongous step of moving forward. Poor girl, everything social was super new to her. Healthy/strong mindset = “I don’t have to need anyone nor anything to continue living the happiest best life I can have”- sounds naive but can be easily attained by someone with a strong sense of self-love. Unfortunately the anime doesn’t revolve around that. 😂 It is a story of healing, realization, and growth. Romance was just a plus.

I would *never* call what Violet feels for Gilbert an 'unhealthy obsession'.
Just the thought alone is an insult to her character and love for the one man who thought of nothing but her happiness.
Besides, she wouldn't be able to grow as much as she had with a mere obsession.
You could *easily* turn this around on Gilbert as well since he straight up said that he'd kill himself if Violet died after the Battle of Intense.
Her need for orders was based entirely on her relationship in the army and her inability to properly communicate her desire to simply be with the man she loved from the bottom of her heart.
That's true. Even before the battle and finding out the possibilities of being transferred to Hodgin's care. It's plain to see she just can't communicate her desire to stay by Gilbert's side and that's why she kept asking for orders to have an excuse to do so.
I can kind of see Dietfried's point. He gave Violet to Gilbert so that she could protect him during the war. It was a way to guarantee Gilbert's safety since Dietfried himself couldn't protect him, since he was in the navy. So when Violet came back alive instead of Gilbert himself, I can see how much pain it must have caused to Dietfried. His brother died trying to protect the "weapon" that was given to him to assure he'd make it out alive.
I binged watch this from the afternoon to 2:00am!! AND IT WAS WORTH IT! MY BLANKET IS WET FROM ALL THOSE TEARS I WAS DRYING OFF MY FACE

Yeah I just binge watched all 13 episodes and I have concluded that I'm allergic to this anime- my eyes kept watering up something fierce.

Back in those days, 15 years age gaps would be nothing huge. Even today, there are couple with such huge age difference
The major became Violet's reference point (we all have references, father, mother, friends, family) but that soon became an anchor. Living solely for the sake of someone else will eventually leave nothing but emptiness once that person dies.
I have yet to find that kind of anchor but when I do I only hope they feel the same as I do or more so

How I felt about this anime. Gilberts absense was the best thing for her. Violet was able to find and discover herself in ways that likely would of not happened.

Gilbert thought the same way, he's alive. He didn't want to have Violet continue to follow in his footsteps. He wanted her to be her own person above everything else and is racked with guilt over what happened at the last battle and realistically everything that had become of Violet up to that point. Gilbert faked his death in the light novels so Violet could have a normal life and truly learn what it is to be human, to be something more than a tool used for war and violence. I'm hoping that when we get the movies and second season eventually, we get to see this put on screen, as well as Gilbert's and Violet's reunion

It can't be called a unhealthy relationship because Major actually 'save her life'. She was nothing, a tool to be used and then discarded. He was the one who showed her love, Happiness, sadness, anger. He was the one who showed her how to be human. He just wanted her to be free.
She may be obsessed with him. But the only reason for this is because she couldn't understand her feelings before him. She didn't know what love, sadnesses, Happiness was until he showed to her. He was her Savior and the person she loves. This is show even by the fact that even if he was dead, he still wanted her to be okay.

It also takes understanding grief. Grief is something else that only a few can understand.
There is not plenty of fish in the sea there's plenty of trash in the sea and very few loyal enough to be worthy of love!
I really hate the fact that there's still some people who wouldn't appreciate this and would judged this as weird romance just because they have an age gap and they didn't clearly consider the story context itself. People who thinks like this are dumb and therefore disgusting because they don't know how to empathize others. Love comes in different and many ways. Why must love be only true if all accepts it?? 🤦
Yeah, personally I don't see it as romance, mainly I think the love they share is familial. I know it is strongly implied in the original that it's romantic, but again it's only _implied_ . Even so, I see nothing twisted about it.

Tbh, if you think of it. She's actually the reason why Gilbert had lived longer in the Battle Intense. If she hadn't pulled him off the trap and carried him to safety even though she was losing her arm, he would be dead by now. (since he wasn't aware of the trap found in the center of the church at hand) I got really pissed when Dietfried blamed her for causing Gilbert's death even though she's the reason why it was prolonging in the first place.
My heart breaks every time she puts something in her mouth, and not because she lost her arms 😭
I kept wondering why she keeps doing it, to the puppy plush and the brooch. At first I thought she was just being weird, but now I think it has to do with how she tried to drag Gilbert to safety with her mouth. It's like she keeps reliving that memory when she thinks of him and hoping he's alright. Tragic...

I think the relationship of Violet and Gilbert is so complex and interesting. Though so simple and beautiful. It's really sad to see such strong feelings of love and devotion in the terrors of war.
Also I always found Gilberts struggle (mainly described in the light novel, I guess) of what to do with Violet very interesting. He knew it was bad to take her to the battlefields, but he didn't want to put her in an orphanage, because he feared she could hurt someone there (as she was somehow already a weapon). Later when his affection for her develops it gets even harder for him, I guess. Somewhere in the LN I read about his self-loathing, can't remember the chapter unfortunately. Gilbert is such a great character! Hope the movie will release here soon!
Violet grew mentally and emotionally And became a better human being after meeting Gilbert.... Gilbert's dream was for Violet to be free. It's never grooming nor unhealthy obsession. They both grew with the purest love.
Violet Evergarden Ever After needs a continuation. The author really likes to make us suffer.

But the fact that they almost never see each other due to their work is heartbreaking. It is implied that they will get married eventually, but still I want a more definitive ending for the two of them. They deserve it.
The way I see it, I don't think it's an obsession, at least not an unhealthy one. Violet never had any positive human interaction before Gilbert came along. Its only natural that she would cling onto the one positive thing in her life, but her journey allowed her to grow past that and let go of her past and make her own future. She can become a positive influence onto the lives of others as Gilbert was to hers.
To say the truth I never get bored of watching this animé... Because whenever I watch this animé my heart.. It aches a lot... Even now😭

As Violet readily laid down her life for Dietfried, Dietfried witnessed first hand just how much Violet had tried to protect MAJ Gilbert, to the point of losing both arms and almost her life in the process

It kind of backfired on him because she wouldn't want to be anywhere but by his side. He was the most important thing to her and perhaps, he simply didn't feel worthy of that. She was a child in a war killing with cold efficiency with little regard to her own safety.

LunaLemon Cecelia it’s more explained in the book. Gilbert felt guilty because violet was thanking him. Gilbert had only ever taught her basic military jargon and practical words so when violet said she didn’t know the word beautiful, Gilbert felt guilty because he never taught her meaningful words like beautiful. Then he felt even more remorse when violet thanked him for the brooch because Gilbert felt as if he had only used her as weapon and only taught her to kill, so why was she thanking him? He’s heartbroken that violet would look up to him because Gilbert would use her in war.
I loved this part about her most because if she was given to another her past could be so much worse and the whole point of the show was to show us the audience how violet deals with all these new unfamiliar environment and scenes while trying to understand why Gilbert said "I love you." I have watched this show so many times that no matter what I always cry at the sad scenes oh and some of the happy ones too because it is so moving. I have lost loved one but that never fazed me and the December the 23 last year I lost my best friend who has been apart of my life for 7 years and I still can't mention him without getting emotionally upset and depressed it. Now going of that it is as the description said Gilbert was pretty much her whole world just like the anime "Tower of god" We're Rachel is everything to bam because she's the one who became his world because that was all he new. Also I can't say more about TOG because I don't wanna spoil it for those that want to watch that upcoming anime or those who are or going to read the Webtoons version.

I don't think its an unhealthy obsession. I think its more of devotion because he was the first person to treat her like a human. Its too bad that she still thought he thought she was a human weapon cuz that's what she was told her whole life. Since she didn't know emotions she didn't know what she felt towards Major. Gilbert was the most important person in her life and she loved him and cared abt him even though she didn't know what it was called. In addition, violet followed Major everywhere and devoted her life to him. She depended on his orders and linked her existence to his.

Yes age doesn't matter in love, however violet is still a minor here. That's why its kinda awkward. But i think the reason why nobody sees this as wrong is because in the early days younger womens are tend to be married to older guys.

It’s her last memory of the Major. After losing both arms, she tried to drag him to safety with her mouth.
Further, she has no sensation with mechanical arms do so her biting the brooch is a way to feel the Majors presence

Deal with it, yeah it’s an unhealthy relationship in an unhealthy era at an unhealthy environment, but that’s what’s romantic about it. That part that Violet never moved on from Gil. If you put it by real world standards, she is scary. Fortunately, she moved on from being a killing machine and choosing her path rather than breaking and going crazy like how other animes portray ex-military personnels.

Gilbert never want her to feel that way, he want her to make up her own mind someday and be able to stand on her own, but he himself don’t know how to do that. which I understand because it’s not easy to teach people while having the fear-of what you might put inside their minds and they might end up still depending on what you will say to them. I guess that’s the purpose why Gilbert had to die for violet to decide how her life will be, because she is more than just a tool to be used by other people. That’s why he told her to ‘live’. And to live is to follow no one’s others and being able to break free from every chain that is keeping your heart to decide on its own.
Obsession isn’t healthy and is very toxic as it is. But it would be a goddamn insult to say that to someone who’s still sane and striving to live, trying to fix things up. To long and seek for something that you feel inside is missing is normal as long as it inspires you to unleash your inner potential and capacities. Unraveling your own mysteries despite the agony you’re battling an eye opener to mend your own wounds.
As for their love towards each other, i would not like to say that age doesn’t matter nor it matters too. Let us just let the story go on its own flow and accept whatever lies ahead. If you don’t like the idea of their love or you’re disgusted by what they shared in the past, might as well just shut up when you got nothing good to say.
The point is, there’s a lot of story and anime or whatever out their to binge on. Hating on this one is an insult to the author’s ideas and imagination. It’s better not to burst someone else’s bubble when you know nothing at all in the very first place.

This is an absolutly amazing and beautiful series but the english dubbing takes away from the feeling and emotion that it conveys . Better to watch in its original language and read the english sub titles .

Ug, the English acting is so cringe. The pauses between lines are too unnatural. Maybe it's a problem with English vs Japanese speech density, but there needs to be more filler to cover all those uncomfortable gaps.

I know this a late reply, but i think she never think of him as a father figure.. i have this feeling(that she love him romantically)bcz at the broch scene where she standing Infront of that broch shop,she said that she don't know what this feeling is. I think you understand me better if you rewatch that scene where gilbert wanted to buy her gift and she choose broch.
