Gilbert actually said to Hodgins before the battle if something happened to him to bring her to the Evergarden Family, so I’m not too sure if he originally wanted her in his family but Dietfried didn’t so he decided on the Evergarden family because Tiffany was grieving and it would have been nice for her to have her own family with new people, this was in the anime but I’m not too sure since it’s my theory and I haven’t read the LN yet.
There's a theory that Dietfried didn't have a good relationship with his father and there's a possibility that their father beat him when he was a child so that the only person he loves is Gilbert and their mother. After meeting Violet, Dietfried was terrified and impressed at the same time and came to the conclusion that if he give Violet to Gilbert as a tool, Violet may be able protect Gilbert during the war. After Gilbert "died",(he's alive in the LN but since the anime didn't gave much clarification it was assumed that he died) Dietfried blames Violet for his death even though he knew that in someway it was his fault for not joining the army and not been able to protect Gil. Other than Violet and Gilbert, Dietfried, Gilbert's brother, was actually the character I liked the most! Although he does come off as cynical and mean-spirited, especially towards Violet, I can really see that as the only possible human response at the time. It is implied that Violet killed Dietfried's entire crew, and although it is not her fault, from Dietfried's perspective, dehumanizing her and being angry is the most humane thing that any person could do, because he saw her act violently towards his men, whose deaths he felt responsible for. Dietfried also is dealing with the trauma of the war, trauma of losing his brother, having to become the Bougainvillea heir (which he had given up to Gilbert and now that responsibility is once again pushed onto him) and it is also implied that his upbringing was far more tragic than Gilbert's due to an abusive father. In episode 12, he even seems jaded towards higher officials, talking openly of Gilbert and sadly questioning the idea of peace. Despite his anger, he has a sense of duty and I wouldn't go so far to call him cruel, seeing as he does care for others and even protects Violet. Other veterans within the story have support (Hodgins, Spencer, Violet), but Dietfried doesn't seem to have this, having to take care of his grieving mother. While Violet shows an exaggerated version of a veteran, I think Dietfried embodies many, especially the repressed anger and pain and outwards cynicism towards the world. Bruh, I don't know, i just saw a lot of pain and sadness in him and then you see the family pictures where he was always smiling, and then you realize he doesn't smile much anymore, and it just really hit me.
dude this is such a artistic way of describing his character! Gilbert was my favorite character too. I can't really blame him for being so cold to violet, but I was glad to see him see how much violet cared about the major at the end. And to see that he didn't hold so much contempt for violet anymore.
@@emilynam6084 Ah, thank you so much! I never thought much of Dietfried at first, but my sister absolutely adored him, and when I asked why, his point of view becomes more clear. I always feel terrible when someone labels him as an inhumane ass that put Violet in her current position when, in reality, I think he is genuinely a good person who was put in a terrible situation. Yes, Violet was a child at the time of killing his crew, but most children are not capable of easily killing at least ten grown men. Those were men Dietfried was leading and was responsible for. Those were men who will no longer see their families and Dietfried would now have to answer for that. Violet obviously didn't know better and probably felt threatened, and I am not trying to blame her, but, when looking at it through Dietfried's perspective, I can only conclude that he was absolutely traumatized. How could he see her as the non-weapon Gilbert did when he just saw her kill multiple men without remorse? Within the series, we are meant to sympathize with Violet because she is the protagonist and because it is natural for an audience to take the side of the doe-eyed girl rather than the hardened asslike naval captain, but Dietfried's terror and resentment can be easily understood if you look at the situation more carefully. As for what he did afterwards, giving her to Gilbert which inevitably led to her being a child soldier, was of course terrible, but I have to remember that this was a man on the brink of insanity. Also, there weren't too many options other than killing her. He could have dropped her off at an orphanage or something, but there was no way he could have known she wouldn't burst into a killing spree there. It should also be said that the entire army, including Hodgins at one point, was complicit in Violet being a soldier, and almost everyone was annoyed with Violet due to her inability to understand emotions, so for Dietfried to be mad after what he went through was kind of understandable. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but I like to think he gave her to Gilbert because he knew Gilbert would be good to her, which he wasn't capable of at the time due to their history. Ah, sorry for the essay, it's rare I get to talk about him much, but I've found him interesting and his body language always reveals a different story, I've come to realize.
English dub doesn't always lack emotion. This one, however, is certainly flat in comparison to the original, but it may seem that way because we aren't native Japanese and therefore miss subtleties.
This is, actually, why I will, quite often, watch an anime with the subtitles and original audio. Each country has their own little nuances insofar as emotion and language are concerned. As such, without the notes of the original director and staff, we can, unintentionally, loose the meaning behind what words were said and why.
I'm from Germany and not a native english speaker. For me, the dub is just fine. I like the calm tone and the voices fit the characters pretty well. I bet, I'd think that the german dub would suck ^^ but haven't watched it in german yet. Maybe it's just that people are somewhat used to their respective language and don't take that into account while judging an anime dub. Just my opinion, though.
You would really understand dietfried's character if you read the light novels. In it, it was mentioned that violet massacred everyone of his friends without understanding the situation. He said that she was a monster and that he was scared of her, but she didn't kill only him
He treated her harshly because he didn't understand how she could kill without emotions. He was afraid of her and this made him treat her not like a child or a human but an inhumane tool
The moving song is “what it means to love” I believe in this very moment she finally understands the Major’s last words. She realises she has loved the Major all along. Not blind obedience from a tool needing order. But devoted love for her dearest beloved. Thus Violet no longer needs order. Dietfried also finally sees just how much Violet loves his brother
This anime really made me question what the true definition of living is. This scene (and many others) had me in tears. When the women said 'My son is alive. In here.' and reached for her heart, I finally got the definition I was looking for. For me, existing is being present, while living is being known off. Because let's think about it. The body really is but a vessel that our mind and spirit tend to use to express who we are. It's like a tool to us. But who we ARE can never be defined by how we look. To *know* someone, is to understand who that person wants to be. And when you know someone for who they really are, they're alive. The idea of a person is just brought into existence, because they are in the same presence as you. but the fact you (the person reading this) can't see me physically typing this, doesn't mean I'm not alive. I assure you that I am alive, and I'm right here with you. It just so happens to be that you speculate about who I am/used to be. Even if my body gives in to death, which all of our bodies are bound to do really, I will live on. If not inside the hearts of my loved ones, or the memories of the people who knew me for me, than at least I am alive in this UA-cam comment under a Violet Evergarden video posted by kramotakra (who currently has 2,04K subs) lol. And I will be out here, forever.
The way Dietfried speaks to her, he’s also talking about himself. His own father treated him as a tool, so he took own his self hatred out on Violet. And when she shows signs of freedom, he’s enraged cuz he’s still stuck as his father’s tool. But in the end, he made the sacrifice to stay the tool for Violet and Gilbert’s happiness. Well done!
I remember how, in the first episode, she didn't think she was worth anything if she didn't have a military directive. Dietfried hated her for surviving instead of Gilbert (whether it was because she was viewed as just another military tool or the fact that she didn't see an existence outside of being given orders, hence not really living). Then, at the end of the episode, she decides that she doesn't need to be ordered to live to keep on living. I often wonder what causes the light switch to, suddenly, be turned on and someone has a change of attitude. But, I guess we all have that even that suddenly gives up clarity.
How Kikuchi Hidenobu (Voice of Dietfriet Bougainvillea) explains it: Whenever Colonel Dietfriet makes an appearance, I feel very bad about Violet-chan, but what will happen to his wrath, sadness and loathing later on once he is touched by love? Safe to say, with Violet laying down her life even for a scoundrel like him and hearing how much Violet and his mom love Gilbert, Dietfried heart of stone melted away. I sincerely hope even in the absence of Gilbert, Dietfried will look after Violet to honor his brother's sacrifice and to make up for how mean he had been towards her
Regarding your comment, you realize that he too loved his brother more than anything, right? Everybody deals with loss differently and he was deeply hurting and grieving as well. He projected his own feelings of guilt and self-loathing onto Violet as a coping mechanism, which ,of course, was maladaptive. That doesn't make him a bad person though, it just makes him a desperate bereaved sibling. His grief is not any less valid than that of Violet or his mother.
Since i saw dietfried for the first time he was my fav ,i know he was a douche but i knew deepdown he is just like Gilbert ,n i was hoping for a character développement !glad we got it ,when he saved violet n when he took her to see his mom ah i fell in deep love with him ,was happy they choose this path for his character ,he is interesting ,he has a sens of justice but can be cruel ,hope we will see more of him !
I gotta say the character of Violet Evergarden seems to be entirely based on Celes, from Final Fantasy VI (from 1996). Both are "weapons" created exclusively to kill, both lacked any emotions and never experimented kindness until they meet someone (Locke in Final Fantasy, Gilbert in Violet Evergarden) who treats them with love, both characters struggle to understand what is love because all they knew was violence and death. Even the design of both characters is pretty similar, I'm almost certain the creator of Violet Evergarden took some inspiration from Final Fantasy VI
Since the new episodes and movies, they mention that it's been 4 years since the war putting her at 18 at least, and with the new movie coming out, who knows how much older thatll put her then
dietfried hates violet so much because he blames her for his younger brother's "death"... but really gilbert is alive somewhere sorry for the spoilers!
I think dietfried sort of hated her because he thought she was responsible for his brother's death and as the story continues he realizes that she was not responsible for it. Brotherly love ig ( kinda hated hm when he said mean things to violet )
OKAY so has anyone here heard about the light novel for violet evergarden? Ppl keep saying Gilbert is alive and doing well while everyone thinks he is dead, is that true???
Idk why i'm commenting it in this video but, in the movie that was released last year 2020 they said that when Violet turned 18 she stopped working in the company and did not go back anymore. In that part was that the time that she is living with Gilbert? So meaning both of them lived together in that small island?
Yes it looks like unfortunately. I hate this ugly small Island…They should have returned and Violet could have kept also her friends! There‘s an artwork where she invited them to their Wedding at the Island . But I would prefer when they would have returned to Leiden
If you watch gundam unicorn and origins on the english dub just imagine Dietfried on a red uniform and a mask that is 3 times faster than violet and also this is the true face of HUNK in RE joke aside with a trivia though :)
omg! Poor Violetto would have had a heart attack! Gil's mom: My son is still alive Violet: *gasp"* Gil's mom: He is alive in here *points to heart* Violet: *cries again* ..... Gil's mom: Even now, I still love him Violet: yes...yes....*cries harder* ..... Dietfried: You must live to honor his memory. That is my last order. Violet: I no longer needs order *bow graciously* Dietfried: *smile* Violet: *smile back* Gilbert: *turn from front seat* SURPRISEEEEE!!! You two miss me much? Violet: *gasp* ...M...M...Maj......or..... Diefried: kisama!!! you...you....you put your own mother and me...and Violet through this...all these time!!! Come Violet, let's teach this SOB a lesson!!! Violet: Yes Captain! Give me your order! Gilbert: wa...wait.....I thought you no longer need order...so that's why I come back now because you.... *whack* *stomp* *stomp* *whack*
I saw an official post about a movie coming out in Japan 2020. Everyone said that Gilbert is alive and was in the trailer. What’s even going on?! I mean I already know what happened in the light novel.
You guys I just watched the 2020 film and just recently finished the other films & episodes surprisingly w/o any spoilers and because of that I have come to accept that the Major is truly dead so I kinda feel stupid that I thought these 2 will ended up together lmao 😂 In my defense I get what Cattleya was saying to Hodgins that you know, they are grieving for the same person so they’ll understand each other and I thought hmm maybe it wasn’t so bad lol

He had very impressive character development in the last 3 episodes and in the movie. Would have been nice to see more of him tho
Having watched the movie, Its truly heartbreaking how Mrs Bougainvillea passed away without the knowledge that her son Gilbert actually survived.
That’s Gilbert deserves swift punch
She regained her lost arms though mechanical and she will regain the other most important thing she lost soon enough. Her true *Major* Happiness" :)
I see what you did there
Why the English Dub always sounds as the characters lack emotions? I always prefer the original language with English subs.
English dub doesn't always lack emotion. This one, however, is certainly flat in comparison to the original, but it may seem that way because we aren't native Japanese and therefore miss subtleties.
I like Japanese too but my eyes hurt and I miss some scenes because I was too busy reading the subs thats why I switched to dub. :(
This is, actually, why I will, quite often, watch an anime with the subtitles and original audio.
I don't hate English dubs but for me it sounds awkward(?) because I'm used to listening the original ones. No hate, just love
really love the dynamic between these two
You would really understand dietfried's character if you read the light novels. In it, it was mentioned that violet massacred everyone of his friends without understanding the situation. He said that she was a monster and that he was scared of her, but she didn't kill only him
He treated her harshly because he didn't understand how she could kill without emotions. He was afraid of her and this made him treat her not like a child or a human but an inhumane tool
it is so warm and fulls of pain with intimate love energy... This is. the best animation I have ever seen
Um
The moving song is “what it means to love”
I believe in this very moment she finally understands the Major’s last words.
Well done!
If you're not a tool then what are you??
"A Human Being remember that"
Gil's Mother : My son is alive... in my heart
Lol when Gil's mother says that my heart skip a beat
I remember how, in the first episode, she didn't think she was worth anything if she didn't have a military directive. Dietfried hated her for surviving instead of Gilbert (whether it was because she was viewed as just another military tool or the fact that she didn't see an existence outside of being given orders, hence not really living). Then, at the end of the episode, she decides that she doesn't need to be ordered to live to keep on living. I often wonder what causes the light switch to, suddenly, be turned on and someone has a change of attitude. But, I guess we all have that even that suddenly gives up clarity.
"live
and be free
from the bottom of my heart
I love you"
How Kikuchi Hidenobu (Voice of Dietfriet Bougainvillea) explains it:
Whenever Colonel Dietfriet makes an appearance, I feel very bad about Violet-chan, but what will happen to his wrath, sadness and loathing later on once he is touched by love?
Reading this after the light novel confirms that Gilbert is alive.
i hope so
DIETFRIET??
kramotakra i ship violet and Dietfriet

After playing Genshin Impact for a while now, the only thing I hear out of Dietfried's voice is Zhongli.

Anyone else here to hear Keith's voice after Zhongli?
This would be more emotional if it was Japanese
well, I'm liken to a waterfall, never ending cascading tears for this episode. I need to watch the complete episodes.
8:39 best moment, cant change my mind!
Just a did you know
Dietfried's dub VA is same as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Speedwagon and Zhongli from Genshin Impact
Awwww i am crying because this anime is so heart touching 😭😭😭😭Thank you🤗🤗🤗
To see all of this now after watching the movie makes me smile.
I cried so hard in this scene.
nothing can stop the feel train
Dietfrieds voice actor voiced Hisoka and Nazeem from Skyrim
Oh hello Zhongli.... I see Rex Lapis took a different form 😏
this so funny in english i can’t-💀
Zhongli and Venti :D
I love this anime
So if you’re not a tool then what are you

What is the title of music that starts at 6:51?
I WANNA CRY MORE WITH THAT MUSIC😭
*when you realize Violet is 14*
goose 19 in the book
without arms 😭
Violet is 14 when she lost Gilbert. And that's not exactky her age since no one knows. They just assumed it based on her physical appearance
Since the new episodes and movies, they mention that it's been 4 years since the war putting her at 18 at least, and with the new movie coming out, who knows how much older thatll put her then
And a child soldier
dietfried hates violet so much because he blames her for his younger brother's "death"... but really gilbert is alive somewhere
sorry for the spoilers!
Dietfried is handsome as gilbert🙂💕
I hear DEEP FRIED
Good job
And here i am again.
bawling like a child that just bashed into the side of the table.
Your comment cheered me up though. How accurate haha
I so love this anime 😍
omg the ending made me cryyyyyyyyyy TTvTT
I think dietfried sort of hated her because he thought she was responsible for his brother's death and as the story continues he realizes that she was not responsible for it. Brotherly love ig ( kinda hated hm when he said mean things to violet )
Is he voiced by the same guy who does Gabriel Agreste?
Heck?! Really?! No wonder i hate that guy when he appears in each episode 😬🤣
At the end it’s Dietfriend knocking on the door I’m sure
Omg...the meeting with their mom! 😖😩😩😫😭😭😭😭 😫
I'm crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I hear zhongli
Need the movie parts in this too and maybe put it in order of when he appeared throughout the show

Those hands were built out of adamantium.
Deepfried Bougainvillea
Deitfried bougainvillea
Idk why i'm commenting it in this video but, in the movie that was released last year 2020 they said that when Violet turned 18 she stopped working in the company and did not go back anymore. In that part was that the time that she is living with Gilbert? So meaning both of them lived together in that small island?
Yes it looks like unfortunately. I hate this ugly small Island…They should have returned and Violet could have kept also her friends! There‘s an artwork where she invited them to their Wedding at the Island . But I would prefer when they would have returned to Leiden
hawkmoth ?
who is cutting onions?!?
If you watch gundam unicorn and origins on the english dub just imagine Dietfried on a red uniform and a mask that is 3 times faster than violet and also this is the true face of HUNK in RE joke aside with a trivia though :)
This english dubbing sounds so odd... and unnatural... nevertheless, these scenes still make me cry...
Maybe the driver is Gilbert
omg! Poor Violetto would have had a heart attack!
Gil's mom: My son is still alive
Violet: *gasp"*
Gil's mom: He is alive in here *points to heart*
Violet: *cries again*
.....
Gil's mom: Even now, I still love him
Violet: yes...yes....*cries harder*
.....
Dietfried: You must live to honor his memory. That is my last order.
Violet: I no longer needs order *bow graciously*
Dietfried: *smile*
Violet: *smile back*
Gilbert: *turn from front seat* SURPRISEEEEE!!! You two miss me much?
Violet: *gasp* ...M...M...Maj......or.....
Diefried: kisama!!! you...you....you put your own mother and me...and Violet through this...all these time!!! Come Violet, let's teach this SOB a lesson!!!
Violet: Yes Captain! Give me your order!

Trust me netflix most likely made dietfried ends up w caring violet i said what i said
I saw an official post about a movie coming out in Japan 2020. Everyone said that Gilbert is alive and was in the trailer. What’s even going on?! I mean I already know what happened in the light novel.
You guys I just watched the 2020 film and just recently finished the other films & episodes surprisingly w/o any spoilers and because of that I have come to accept that the Major is truly dead so I kinda feel stupid that I thought these 2 will ended up together lmao 😂
In my defense I get what Cattleya was saying to Hodgins that you know, they are grieving for the same person so they’ll understand each other and I thought hmm maybe it wasn’t so bad lol
