Waterman Hemisphere review

- In this video I review my Waterman Hémisphère fountain pen (and, in less detail, the Hémisphère ballpoint pen). I like these pens, I really like the glossy black lacquer, and I even like the fine nib (generally I don't like fine nibs that much). I also show you how the fountain pen writes.
Around 5:50 I act a little weird: was trying to suppress a sneeze :-). - Навчання та стиль
Oh look at you! Such a cutie pie!
I was expecting to see more of a difference in the structure of the review between 2011 and 2020, but for a few small things all the pieces are there, including the music and the wink.
My first “nicer” pens were a Waterman Executive pen and pencil set, very much like the Hemisphere, sold to me by Bert Oser from Bertram’s Inkwell. I think(?) I remember hearing that you bought something from him too. That Waterman set hooked me and I wanted something better, so I got a Duofold ballpoint and pencil from Bert as well. The Duofold fits my hand perfectly, I still love it (except for the current model, I don’t care for the latest changes) and have bought many more. Bertram’s Inkwell is about 15 minutes away from where I live, and I thought you’d like to hear that the store is still open during COVID.
I have this in the Blue Obsession, also F nib, and like it, although I'm not into small barrel pens. Normally, the thin barrel would kill it for me and make it only an occasional writer, but this one writes so beautifully that I frequently keep it inked up. It convinced me that Waterman pens deserve their good reputation, and I wound up buying the Carene, also in Blue Obsession, simply because I was so happy with my Hemisphere.
I bought a Hemisphere with a gold nib and trim (might have been plated; not sure) in 1997. It's still writing beautifully in 2015. Possibly the best £90 I ever spent.
Does Waterman Expert has palladium plating?
I use the Waterman and Expert F/P almost exclusively with either a medium or broad nib and they are among the best fountain pens I own. I do like the Sailor prograr with Zoom nib and the Aurora Optima Broad nib, but the overall consistency and reliability of the Waterman is most desirable for me.
Just got this Pen.Thanks for the fantastic review.
OK, thank you for your reply and for the suggestion. I'll see what happens. Have a happy new year's eve!
Nice sneeze suppression skills.
Hi Sir
Does Waterman Expert has palladium plating?
Mine is matte black (very grippy finish), gold trim and nib. It's very, very elegant and pretty, and smooth as silk (medium Nib). Oh and BTW, i use it with standard Intl. cartridges and it works fine.
a very good pen i've got one in satin and gold version with a fine nib . Some times i have problems with nib smoothing it's a litle bit scratchy
I recently acquired one of these pens. Two things I have noticed, firstly the medium nib is to me, a little on the broad side. Secondly this particular pen occasionally skips, which might be due to manufacturing fluids in the feed. I understand this can happen, so I will give it a good clean and try it again.
Is the pen itself made of lacquer coated resin...or is lacquer atop a brass body as in Waterman Carene?
@sbrebrown There is problem I am experiencing, the pen skips when I am trying to write the first stroke every time after it idles for few seconds, is it the feed problem? especially when I am trying to write a good T, you know those kind, the capital cursive T
i love broad nibs and wet pen too! im looking for a metalic one like this that doesnt cost too much. but somethng you can write with a longer time and the nib very smooth~ is the nib really smooth, as compare to lamy safari?
Hi there, I have a Waterman Expert with a medium nib which I really like. However it is too broad for writing notes usually. I am searching for another pen that is of cigar shape and has a fine(r) nib. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
Could you please review the WATERMAN EXPERT Black GT? Thanks ahead!
Pete :")
Would you recommend this or a sheaffer prelude?
Hello stephen, i can get the waterman hemisphere, and the faber castall basic for about the same price, which one could you advise more??
Well, the line variation you've produced near the end of this video seems quite nice, was it done with effort (putting alot of pressure)? I'm not hoping for a fountain pen nib to flex as much as a dip pen, but just enough to create nice smooth line varations in even quick note taking (because these nibs are less scratchy than dip pen). I tend to write very small letters when making notes, but I still would write with dynamics.
how much does this bleed through paper, personally i hate using pens that bleed because it can make my work looks messy. does it bleed around the same as a pilot varsity? what are your thoughts on the rollerball and ball point version (if you've tried them)?
I bought this pen as my first expensive-ish pen, I got the gold trim version, maybe I will post a video as well :)
My hemisphere is giving me writing issue, when I write from one word lets say Thursday, when I write the next word, the ink won't flow properly and the first second I don't get to write, very annoying
Hi thank you for your wonderful reviews. I was wondering whether the pre and post 2010 Hemisphere nibs are the same? If not are there any differences you might be aware of. Thank you for your wonderful reviews again.
I think they are the same, but I'm not 100% sure
Waterman pens take standard international cartridges btw. Mine currently has a Faber Castell converter in it which standard international size. Parker which is made by the same company is not standard international size and they will only take parker carts or converters :-)
can you remove the nib on this pen? Also, does this pen come with cartridges or a converter?
Thank you for this most interesting video.
How does this pen, in your opinion, compare to the Namiki Falcon?
Great review! I'm thinking of getting the Waterman Ball Point like your's in the video. What do you think of the Ball Point version of the Hemisphere? Nice and smooth?
Would this be a good deal at €48,99?
Had it for four years, still writes great although I'm planning to upgrade to the Carene.
Also :)
HI Steven. I got a USD30 amazon coupon from my school and I would like to spend it on a pen. I have few choices in mind.
1. Waterman Expert $31/ Hemisphere $41
2. Cross ATX $48/ Aventura $38/ Bailey $36
3. Taccia Overture $42
Which pen should I get this time? Which would be the most value for money and which to your knowledge would be the smoothest? What other pens and brands would you recommend within this price range (Amazon-wise)?
Based on the review and your other videos where you talk about a Waterman being your first serious pen, I bought one of these in black with gold trim. It's a real joy to write with but I find it a bit too thin for fast writing. Looks great in serious meetings though.
Indeed, this is a relatively thin section. A nice nib, but I have issues with this pen for longer writing too.
I have the gold and metal version, it is my primary pen at home (I carry a lamy in my pocket), waterman is my favorite fountain pen manufacturer. It would be great to see a review the expert waterman and the charleston, other two of my fountain pens i really like
Have you reviewed the Waterman Phileas? Do you know can they be converted to eye-dropper?
I haven't reviewed it and I don't own one so I'm not sure if they can be converted.
Hope you get atleast one of them, can I recomend the Charleston? It gives the feeling of a clasical fountain pen of 20's :)
I have with gold bath in Green :D Great PEN!!!
can you review the parker jottter fountain pen?
I'm debating a Diplomat Esteem, a Waterman Hemisphere and a waterman expert with a 23k plated nib, which of the above should I seriously look at for a first Fountain pen?
I have only used the Hemisphere, and that's a nice pen to start with.
Awesome, thank you kindly.
sbrebrown Excellent review and video. I'm going to order one. What is the Waterman Hemisphere Starlight CT Fountain Pen, is it an older model?
Parkin L I have no idea, never seen that one.
I couldn't find the dimensions on your site. Would it be possible to know the section length and diameter please? Also, pen weight without cap? Thanks.
Jozsef Kurucity This is an old review where I didn't provide measurements. I no longer own this pen, so I can't check.
sbrebrown no problem. I think this is also useful : www.gourmetpens.com/2015/07/review-waterman-hemisphere-ombres-et.html?m=1
Is there a way to contact you for help with fountain pens because I'll be getting a Sheaffer but I don't know it's model so I can't search for its pros+cons etc.
You can send me a private message through UA-cam.
+Jim Mckey Through my profile page, or use the contact form on my website.
Nice pen. You should try Diplomat pens, the Traveller is very similar to the Hemisphere and remarkably smooth and the big Diplomat Excellence is just exceptional.
I just bought this fountain pen and have been writing with it for about a week. I really love this pen but I have a problem with the ink flow. Everytime I stoke down in the beginning of a sentence (EG a capital "C"), the pen doesn' t write... It really fustrates me and I was hoping you have a solution for my problem? Thank you in advance!
That can be caused by all sorts of issues, but it is possible the nib tipping is overpolished. What pen and nib grade is it?
feltrook383 Then it may not be overpolishing but general dryness instead. Check out my playlist on pen tuning.
I will absolutely try that! Thank you! If it doesn' t work, do you have any other solutions?
+feltrook383 Did you fix your problem? :)
yes I did! It writes perfect now, I love it. There is now another problem, on every "gold" part of the pen, there are appearing small pigments, rust pigments I assume. If I try enough I can rub it off but it annoys me immensely...
orthodox christian byzantine music in the intro
I received this pen as a gif (the black and gold-trimmed version). I've been using it for precisely a year. I would like to point out that the very smooth and glossy black finishing, although very pleasant at touch, does not behave well with repeated de-capping. The cap actually left an approximately 2x2 mm area where the black stuff came off completely, exposing the ugly yellow-ish material underneath. I'm very disappointed with this. I don't know, is this normal for a ~60 euros fountain pen?
I believe it's brass underneath. This happened to my Waterman Allure in light blue lacquer. ( I think the only way to avoid it is to not post it. Or get one in steel, I have a Hemisphere coming from Fountain Pen Day recently and it is the steel version.)
I love Waterman, I Laureat as well from 1989 that still writes great. 😃😃
Hi, nice vids, like it, would you say this waterman hemisphere or the parker urban premium?
I don't think it matters much. both are comparable pens.
+Sjoerd van Loon It may depend on your taste and use for the pen, in my opinion the urban premium can look more "casual" or can be both casual and formal depending on the colors, although the waterman seems more like an elegant formal piece
Just got this pen, with gold trim, makes me feel...exciting....is that normal? Writes so smooth feels like magic compared to the Baoer thing.....makes me feel like keep writing and writing and writing.,....RARWWWWWWW
I'm a Greek teacher of Byzantine music myself and i'm very glad to discover that people outside Greece know what this music is. If you don't mind me asking, are you American? Btw i 'm considerind buying a Parker Sonnet fountain pen and i'd appreciate your opinion. Thank you very much.
Is the gripping part also metallic?
Suman Nildeep Nath No, it's plastic
@sbrebrown Its a pretty good price. Around 12 english pounds. I guess around 18 euros
Oh and I forgot to mention for about the same price as the Hemisphere :)
(Also forgot to say nice video, you suppressed that sneeze with class I must say !)
Thanks
How much does the pen weight ? Is he lightweight ?
It is made of metal but I didn't find this pen super heavy.
The nib is a steel one plated with palladium.
Hi Sir
Does Waterman Expert has palladium plating?
beautiful, just watched it... Fairly simple :)
why don't you like ballpoint pens?
Do you recommend using a fountain pen for a student?
I prefer fountain pens to ballpoint pens for many reasons. Yes, I'd recommend fountain pens for everyone.
Thank you for the reply.
I thought I was the only strange character that liked pens.
I want to know if nibs.com can be trusted.Because I want to buy a vintage Waterman there.
Thanks a lot Stephen.
And is it true that you soak a vintage hard rubber pen in the water,it Will be discolored?
Max Wong That can indeed happen.
I bought one and washed it and it got discolored. Can it be fixed?
I know of no ways to undo that.
What are your thoughts on Waterman expert pen?
I've seen it and it looks nice, but I have never used one, sorry. Our lab did give one to our professor when he became a full professor and it seems to write nicely :-).
I think the expert is very similar to the hemisphere but has a slightly different band design on the cap as its gold plated. The nib looks much the same to the hemisphere apart from being a two toned gold plated, my expert writes pretty smooth. My only problem with the expert is that the clip has scratched the cap where they touch down to the bare metal which looks terrible. Hope that helps:)
The nib is stainless steel, rhodium on nibs is only used for coating.
I like the waterman stainless steel nibs, as they are smooth writers (the ones I know), but I never used a fine nib.
The design is (without any offence meant) in my opinion a cowardly carene ;)
The way to the carene design (my favourite waterman design) is there, but the designer didn't dare to go the last step...
@sbrebrown No problem :-) you have the same pen as me and in the same version as mine :-) I wish your vid had been up when i was looking at buying one, id have bought one faster!
I cleaned it twice already, but this time, I first put the converter inked up with Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo(which flows very well and it is a must have blue ink imo, get it XD), then I start to write, still has the issue, I twist the converter with the ink in the pen, into the ink bottle, then pull the ink back up from the bottle like a piston filler, now writes perfectly haha. get the Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo
Ah ok, cool thanks for the reply :)
why do you do the french accent when pronouncing pen names whenever possible? Most of them are not even french made :D
Though mine is a medium!
if only i could have handwriting like that...
@sbrebrown LOL, I might need to change my name to - The Reviewer LOL, looking at too many things, They say it's stainless steel with 23k gold coating.I wonder how this would compare the the eBay Baoer fountain pen, which cost $0.99, I was pretty shocked by this $1 fountain pen, writes very smooth after I got used to it. I also subscribed to you as well :)
Are you aware that the opening tune of this video is Byzantine music? How come?
@zhangyunjie2046 check out his new video man
Bought one of these today...at the price it would of been rude not too.
