A beautiful pen, but way overpriced. I have a good as new Mk2 in a presentation box, purchased from a well-known auction site for £40 GBP. LAlthough it is pre-owned, you would hardly know it … writes as smooth as anyone could ever wish for. nib has little or no bounce, but is far from dry or scratchy. Good advice regarding cartridges and converters … the terms ‘international’ standard and ‘universal’ can be misleading. For the pen shown not to come with a converter is nothing short of scandalous! I have a steadily growing collection of Watermans and love them all. Many thanks for the review. Subscribed.
Thank you for the comment and the sub! Waterman makes a great pen. I do with they would introduce more models. They have had their current lineup for so long.
Thank you very much for the review. I was looking for a new pen and was seriously considering the Edison Collier but you review made me remember how long my Graduate lasted, from junior high to college! I'll give this pen a go :) Here in France (Amazon) you can find this model from 80 to 110 euros depending on the model. I'm torn between the grey/gold and all black (black nib too)!
I'm at the point where I've become more interested in snap cap pens; mainly because I don't like threads in my grip, and equally for the convenience. I found your review to be very helpful. One thing I would add would be the barrel diameter.
I own several and really like modern Waterman pens. The Expert III is excellent all round; style, looks, the nib and even the price (I bought my lacquered black w/patterned chrome cap for $145). Mine came in a gift box , with the converter included, a cartridge, and a bottle of Serenity Blue. Modern Waterman pens are everything almost all Parker, Sheaffer and Cross pens are not nowadays: elegant, chic, dependable and pleasurable writers. And to me, mostly fairly priced. I just wish Waterman offered more nib options like stub, double broad. Blake, if you have any experience with the other cool Waterman models, I wonder what you think of them; Carene, Hemisphere, Charleston, Perspective, Emblem, Exception . And, of course, the old, discontinued Phileas is arguably a must-have and trumps modern popular ubiquities like Lamy Safari and the rest of them.
Hi Sajjad, thank you for your comment! I agree with your thoughts on Parker, Sheaffer, and Cross. It really is too bad. Regarding other Waterman pens, I've had the Carene with a stub nib - can't really fault this pen, it was great quality and a nice writer but for some reason it felt a bit boring to me (I had the standard black and gold trim). I have a Waterman Charleston that I bought new (like 20 years ago). It was one of my first gold nib pens ever, it's a good looking pen but proportionally the nib is a bit small. I will do a review eventually. I no longer have a Phileas but it was an exceptional pen for the price. (I may have to buy another one) I don't have experience with the other Watermans you listed The Exception is a pen I would like to own. I think they only make the "slim" version now but I want to find one of the full size ones at some point...not cheap pens. Which modern Watermans are your favorites?
@@BlakesBroadcast ..Thanks for replying. But you always do. The Carene with a stub nib sounds pretty cool to me. Wish I had one. Waterman’s nibs, whether gold or steel, are generally stiff but I like them a lot. I actually own all the Waterman pen models I listed earlier. I’d say my absolute favorites are the Carene, Charleston and the Exception. And of course the vintage Edson. I’m lucky and happy to have the older, large sized Exception. Seems like they are very hard to find (new) these days. But darn, they are also much too expensive. I bought mine over three years ago for $430. But it’s a beauty and a keeper. The Phileas will never grow old. It should never have been discontinued. I once had four. Now, I have just the one that I liked best. I gave the others to family and friends in one of my collection downsizing spells. I’d await your review of the Charleston. You’re right about the nib being oddly small for the pen. Still, a very artsy, classy pen. Don’t let it go! 🙂
Liked your review. I have an Expert II. The finial is a piece of gold-plated metal. Unfortunately, years ago, I scratched it. I have stayed away from lacquered pens ever since.
Waterman has always made exceptional quality pens. The modern ones have nail-like nibs but the quality is great. The vintage ones have some of the finest flex nibs out there.
Nice looking pen but it has a huge amount of competition in that price range. My only Waterman’s are two Philieas models that are great writers. Anyway, Happy New Year Blake !!
Hi Gino, yes, there are a lot of great options at the retail price. I think at $60-80 the expert is a good choice you like the style. The Philieas is a great pen. They have actually gone up in value since they discontinued them.
After a couple of years I wanted to buy this FP but its price has always seemed little high and I chose to acquire a pair of Opus 88. About Waterman I must say that the Carene model is one of my favorites.
Is it safe to buy from Amazon in india? Because there are many reviews relating that the waterman pen which they have bought is fake... or a copy... Waterman Expert SS CT ball pen vs. Waterman hemisphere SS ct ballpoint pen --- which is better? Please reply sir...
I have not bought from Amazon in India so I can't really offer much advice. The Watermans I have purchased from Amazon have appeared authentic to my eye. I did a nib swap directly with Waterman for a Carene I bought from Amazon so at the very least that pen was real.
Recently bought the Black and Gold Expert 3 for $90 on Amazon. Also bought the red and silver, but that one cost around $140. The nib on the black and gold is unusable. Had to order a new nib from Waterman for around $30 so… the nib on the Red and silver is beautiful. It’s amazing that no matter the price of a pen, the nib seems to be a crap shoot. I don’t think I will buy another pen until I can attend a pen show or a retail store where I can test it before buying it. I am definitely not somebody who is into sending a pen back for adjustment.
i bought expert3 black n gold for $60 at amazon recently. the way how i could buy it for $60 is amazon hot deal. fortunately, mine is perfect. i rly love this.
At this moment, a Waterman Expert II is my favorite fountain pen. Really good working pen, reliable, elegant.
Glad to hear you like your Expert II.
I've had my black matte Expert II for around 25 years. It has dings on top and bottom, but it's hanging in there. A terrific everyday pen.

Thanks for the feedback! I will start adding in barrel diameter in my future videos.
Great info on the difference between the I, II and III. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the pen and so happy I came across your video. Ordered fine nib from Amazon. Thanks
Glad it was useful!

That is a good price for the Exception. I'll have one eventually if I can find one for the right price.
Amazing review, Blake!
Ps.: Beautiful watch, as usual!
Have an amazing year!
Cheers from Brazil!
Thank you Eduardo! Happy New Year!

Thank you! Lacquered pens can be quite durable. I think they are generally harder to scratch than plastic ones.
Thanks for the review. Good to know about the options we have.
You are welcome David!
Enjoyed your review, I have heard wonderful comments about vintage Watermans, but not so much for the modern Watermans.
Waterman has always made exceptional quality pens. The modern ones have nail-like nibs but the quality is great. The vintage ones have some of the finest flex nibs out there.
Waterman pens are excellent, appreciate your efforts mate.

Thanks for the comment Victor! Opus 88 makes great pens. I had a Carene and it was a great pen with a very pretty inlaid nib.
It is a pleasure and thank you for taking the time to respond.

I love your watch. Could you please share the make and the model?
Thanks! It is a Braun AW50.
Think you for triste interesting vidéo, wich one is better the fine or the medium nib ? +++
I prefer the fine but both are great.
@@BlakesBroadcast : OK think's . Have à Nice Day
Does it has any big difference from allure in writing?
I have an allure, but i found a used expert iii in a very good price, so I'm thinking about it.
I have not used the Allure but I suspect they would write similarly.
@@BlakesBroadcast Thanks!
I know waterman’s pens are excellent but I wouldn’t pay $200 for that pen
Agreed!
how about $80?? i can buy it for $80, but I’m still hesitating to buy it. does it really worth to pay $80?
