Noisy Power Steering and Heavy Steering Wheel Problem - Fixed

- When my Freelander2's power steering system started making a noise and the steering became heavy I checked the oil-level, which was ok . . . but the oil itself was in poor condition.
I removed the old reservoir and cleaned it using the wife's toothbrush, granddad's pipe cleaners and some petrol - this was when I discovered the filter was so clogged that petrol couldn't pass through the filter. The filter cleaned up well, but I could see more sediment hiding in hard-to-reach places. I re-fitted the old reservoir, topped up the oil, and then ran around in the car for a few days (noting that the power steering was now working perfectly). This allowed the original reservoir's finer-screen filter to extract all the fines from the system.
I purchased a new reservoir/filter, attached it's outlet pipe (large pipe on the side), and the old reservoir's inlet pipe (small central pipe) to the hoses and worked the steering wheel to flush the old oil into the old reservoir. Fresh oil was poured into the new reservoir and the old oil was removed from the old reservoir via a hand pump. This was repeated until the oil being hand-pumped from the old reservoir was clean - after about 1 litre of fresh oil had been poured into the new reservoir.
In retrospect: The 'flushing' operation could have been done without cleaning the old reservoir's filter. Its not mounted too firmly in the reservoir so could easily be broken-away using a large screwdriver.
Nice one!
Lot better than putting new fluid in with the old, and then draining again numerous times, out of the same reservior!! And so many people forget/don't know about that nasty filter in the reservior bottle
that's adept at getting blocked!
Well done.
Thanks
Hi TonyMahlony, thank you for go to all that effort to film and describe how to fix a noisy steering pump and heavy steering.
I carried out this procedure with the help of your video and my car is now sorted, no more noise from the pump, the steering is light and is no longer notchy. Thanks again.
Followed the instructions as shown in the video and it solved my problem 100% I was delighted with the result. The Land rover agents wanted to replace the pump (at great expense) Thanks a lot. BrianMcDonald South Africa.
Good job! I'm a diyer on my own car, not the same make (vw) but mechanic's and Servicing are always common sense based, for the most part..
With a bit of reading on makes and the difference in principles of engineering all is doable when it comes to repairs and service, again good job!
Thank for posting!
Thanks for this. Yes, more is "do-able" than you'd ever imagine :-)
Awesome instructable. Will be seeing to my heavy power steering in the same way soon. Thanks for posting this.
Will try this this week, you deserve a medal.
Thank you for your video, you are a kind person who share your knowledge to others.
noisy comes from your kids not from power steering 😂😂
God bless them 😘
thanks for the video...you save me from a crocodile mechanic...they told mo to replace the rack end pinion today.but i try to check the steering system i dont see any leak so i flush the fluid and remove the reservoir and then i notice the filter screen is clogged so i clean the screen and remove old fluid and add new fluid it work perfectly...
Well-done. Glad the video helped you :-)
So I replaced the filter and it works! Thanks mate!
Thank you for sharing this. Helped me with my e39 BMW, too !
Another happy viewer here! Thanks for sharing this! Legend!
Now turn the steering wheel back and forth a couple of times to get the old fluid from the rack and pinion mixed with the new fluid in the reservoir. Pump out the reservoir again and refill. Do this every time you change engine oil, or at least every other time.
Mate... thanks for this video. I have a Disco 2 but after watching your video I realized my reservoir has a clogged internal filter too.
Cheers!
Next time show the noise the power system is making thank you and great video
+Gregorio Davila Good point - but I'm hoping there is no next time :-)
@TitoCreator OK, he'll get back to you in 10 years time...
nice one very helpful, how to bleed the system they air inside, need to start engine and turn right and left few times??
Will this work for a 2001 half ton Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, 2WD, 5.9L, V8 magnum motor? Thank you in advance 🤗
No idea - but it's worth a try isn't it?
I have same problem with my honda odyssey 2005 but there no noise when turning the steering wheel but its too hard to move anywhere, while car is moving or parked if I extra accelerate the engine it moves smoothly.
Reply
Firstly top up the system so not to draw air down the pipe. Then turn the steering wheel side to side slowly with the front jacked up just off the floor and engine off.
Top up system, and only if there's excessive foam, then wait till bubbles go and repeat. Then try with engine on afterwards.
I have a 1997 infiniti Q45 can you tell me how to bleed brakes or master cylinder .thank you
e53 x5 2002 hard steering: wd40/liquid wrench on all joints, changed reservoir, flushed fluid, replaced ujoint and upper steering column. improved just a little. what else can i do? if the car is jacked up steering is soft.
Wish I could advise you - did you get the problem sorted?
no
Car making any noises pump tends to squeal when it's being starved of oil like what's happened in the video if so could be a blockage in one of the pipes preventing fluid moving freely
I have same problem with my nissan altima 2005 but there no noise when turning the steering wheel but its too hard to move anywhere, while car is moving or parked if I extra accelerate the engine it moves smoothly.
Mmm like the pump used where can one get it and which pipe is an inlet and which one is an outlast, and what do you use to pressure the oil in
The pump used was a simple hand-powered pump - readily-available via eBay
Harbor freight
I have a Honda accord 2003 and to hard to turn I changed the power steering pump and the rings of the low and high presure
So, I've taken the reservoir down to clean the filter... How do I clean it? How did you clean it? What do i use to clean it? Is petrol ok or do i need something "stronger". THanks!
I used petrol - but replacing the filter doesn't cost much
Got a Vauxhall insigna 12 plate and the steering kepts going hard both way now and then any ideas
Sorry this is late: Did you fix the problem?
Hi Tony very good video, can the same process be accomplish with a 2002 ford windstar? Thanks
Sorry Mark, I have no idea. I'm just a 'tinkerer' and not a 'real' mechanic. :-)
Yes it can!
I had a Ford Aerostar & Water got into mine, then *froze*; The return hose was removed, & a line attached so we could run it into an Oil drain Pan.
We poured in new (Aerostar I could use Dexron III ATF) 4L Jug full through it & washed out all the gunk & re attached the return Hose, topped it off, & it went back to silent & clean running.
The catch is getting at the Hose in the 1st place!!
It seems each Year, Auto Manufacturers devise more clever ways to make getting at; Wires/Fuses/Bolts/Broken do-dads *more difficult*
Next they might eliminate Bolts & weld everything in place---
"Lets see D-I-Y-ers get THIS off" Hahaha.
I have ford figo ..
Power steering is very hard..
Plz tell me about this problem
I have this same problem? What is the cause?
Hydraulic or electric steering ??? Which model
Why don't you include the sound that this you refer to?
am am Guess I'm just stupid :-(
didn't mean to send this twice. but can you describe it to me because I was told the sound coming from my engine was the power steering pump and the power brake pump by another.
am am If your brakes feel heavy then the noise may be coming from there (although I wouldn't have thought you'd hear the noise until you press the brake pedal). If the steering feels heavy and the noise is more pronounced when you turn the wheel, it must be coming from the steering pump. Difficult to describe a sound . . . I now know that I should have recorded it before fixing it!
+TonyMahlony I'd say Chewbacca is the best way to describe the sound lol
What kind of noise did you have before you went ahead with this?
It began by making a noise at full lock only, but then developed to a slight noise all the time, worse and louder when turning the wheel. A kind of a squealing struggling noise??? Can’t really describe, but I think a muffled squealing struggling sound would be a good description.
TonyMahlony that's exactly the sound I'm experiencing with my 17 year old toyota....it's just a louder strained kind of sound. What I want to know is how do I get my hands on that nifty tube thingy you used to pump out the old brake fluid.....pls ad ty!
dried out bearings perhaps?
lightningfan1980 I got the manual pump from eBay - search for manual syphon pump
Have a kia 2009 sedan. Power steering is hard to turn. What to do?
Jamilia Constantine hydraulic or electric????
Jamilia Constantine hydraulic or electric????
Did you get it fixed . . . if so, how?
I hope it works as well for you as it did for me :-)
Can i put any ATF in ? Honda ATF will work ?
Aurangzeb B don’t put atf for power steering in Honda. Use genuine Honda fluid only . Very sensitive!!!
I have 99 Nissan Sentra when I turn the wheel either way it makes a whining, rubbing sound but fluid is full and the steering wheel isn't hard to turn only had car about 2 weeks how can I figure out the problem it just stared about 4 days ago?
Where did you find the fuel suction pump?
From eBay - very cheap. Search for 'hand syphon pump'. Lots to choose from
thanks
HeavyLander
eBay :-)
This happened to my car and the problem was the low PSI/tire pressure in my tires. There was a grinding noise from the pump and the fluid was pouring out of the reservoir when the car was shut off. After filling up the tires and adding fluid. I was good to go.
Defo weren't the problem.
Hi, Hyundai xcent, 2016 ,diesel, I hve repaired transmission gear box in Hyundai service centre, but now I'm facing new problem, that is hard steering wheel. Please give me advice.
Pravin Shinde I think, it is the problem regarding electric steering rack. Check the connections using a scan tool
Sorry for the late reply - did you fix your problem?
Why u put the old reservoir filter next to the new one?
As I said in the description: I purchased a new reservoir/filter, attached it's outlet pipe (large pipe on the side), and the old reservoir's inlet pipe (small central pipe) to the hoses and worked the steering wheel to flush the old oil into the old reservoir. Fresh oil was poured into the new reservoir and the old oil was removed from the old reservoir via a hand pump. This was repeated until the oil being hand-pumped from the old reservoir was clean - after about 1 litre of fresh oil had been poured into the new reservoir.
where did you get that punp?
+wil young From eBay - very cheap. Search for 'hand syphon pump'. Lots to choose from
Bought that exact same hand pump best 13$ I ever spent..at work when the guys would fill up the wrong equipment, gas or diesel or vice versa!i! Pump out the tanks!!!!iii
Great!
Good video it really works, thanks :-)
Anybody have an idea about this problem??
Issue is when i drive my carits power steering works well for few km but after sometime Power steering heavy when car gets warm and steering gets harder to turn around although its power oil is up to mark and there is no leakage ..
If anyone have an idea about the reason of this issue then plz let me know
tumain1 hi I have the same issues did you manage to find a solution? Thanks
Same problem
if u have tried all remedies w no success check the steering rack pinion..the round bar that comes in and out when u turn the wheel if its coroded it becomes thinner worn out and this will cos loss compression in the rack it will leak ..change steering rack
Mostly the problem wit the drive belt for power steering pump. Check and replace and see the problem persists. Seems like the belt is slipping
man nice way of doing it !
is that his child?
Very good video...the filter is inside the reservoir, how did u managed to clean it?
my steering wheel is heavy......
