Interesting bit of trivia: The Apollo 11 astronauts were told during a transmission from Earth that according to Chinese myth, they should look out for the goddess Chang'e and the Chinese equivalent of the moon rabbit. No mention of Princess Kaguya, however. One of the astronauts responded they would "keep a close eye out for the bunny girl".
Thats so cool! Hmm I grew up with the Chinese myth of Chang'e and Houyi, which has interesting similarities with this Kaguya myth - the exlir of life, the girl going to the moon/returning to the moon, Houyi's trials to get the exlir of life...
The two myths might just have too many similarities to not be derivative. Let’s just say it’s one of the cultural heritages that Japan got from mainland Asia
my favorite probably-myth about the Apollo missions: during a training exercise out in the Mojave desert the Apollo astronauts came across some some Native Americans who asked them what they were doing. When they told them they were training to go to the moon, one of the Natives said "Hey, our gods live up there, if you see anyone could you tell them this" and said something in his own language. Much later they asked a translator what the words meant and were told "Don't trust these white people, they're gonna steal your land"

Lots of characters in folklore, both eastern and western, have names like that. Look at the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, and you'll see examples all over the place.
That was the version I was first told. She gave him that elixir so he could wait for her to come back someday, but the emperor never took it. It's a lot more tragic, and it's probably my favorite interpretation of the myth.
@@PlanetZoidstar It would be fun to see the interactions there, TTS style. "Ohh! and this is your mother in Law, Kaguya. be nice to her!" the Emprah introducing Kaguya to the Primarchs.

Ok, but there's one thing that Red forgot to mention, and it's something that's pretty off-putting, given how sad and tragic this tale is ...terrible puns and folk etymology. See, back then people liked to explain the origins of the words by looking at similarly-sounding ones, and making up stories on how one led to another. Now, add the fact that you can read words in different ways *or* break them down into individual components in Japanese (like "okami" - wolf, but also "o-kami" - a great deity. By the way, there's Kaguya reference in Okami as well), and... yeah. Like, every couple of sentences the story takes a break from this sorrowful tale of loneliness and unrequited love and goes into full Dad Humour mode with stuff like "So, they all flocked to her and cramped her suite, and that's why we call them... THE SUITORS!" or "He was outraged when his pearl-encrusted gift turned out to be fake, and that's what we call... CLUTCHING AT YOUR PEARLS!". I'm not making this up Oh, and on the topic of second dude: he actually had a good plan, and was probably closest to get Kaguya's hand. He loudly announced his trip, and then hid away for few months with hired artisans who made him a forgery of that golden tree. Sadly, in the end he was a cheapskate and didn't pay the artisans, who came knocking at Kaguya's door just as he was about to present his gift for her. So the moral of the story is: always credit your artist and don't steal others work, or it might cost you your magic moon waifu.
Honestly, my favorite part of this story is Red's portrayal of the Emperor as as adorably dorky as any other young man trying to ask his crush out. I can totally see him panicking as he tries to work up the nerve to talk to her, and his servants trying to encourage him. Poor guy. That attempted pickup line/proposal might just be the funniest thing I've ever seen on this channel.

For Kaguya sending her suitors on impossible tasks, I really like the Ghibli version. Each one actually compares aspects of herself to the items she sends them looking for, which results in her idea to send them on those impossible tasks. Seriously, the looks on the suitors faces when they realize she's made them eat their own words is priceless. 😂😂
The tale of the Princess Kaguya is by far my favourite movie of all time and I absolutely adore the scene. It shows her humanity (something that’s usually lacking in a myth which is understandable as it is driven by phenomena and not character) showing her fight for agency in a world that is taking it from her, it shows her desire to just be loved and cherished on her own terms: for her and herself alone not for the fact she is a princess. You also see the men get their comeuppance by not choosing their words wisely, objectifying her to things that are untouchable and will only just be gawked as or used to make the man look better. God I love the movie so much!!!

Sharpe Tutor I know you mean Apollo missions since there are no “Artemis missions”, I mean the god who would be there to react to the Apollo missions, and because the Greek god Apollo is of the sun, he would not be on the moon to react to the Apollo 11 mission landing on the moon, because he would be on the sun, while Artemis, the goddess of the moon, would be on the moon to react, let alone view, the Apollo 11 landing.
Non entity I talked about how Apollo on sun seeing the rocket Apollo:Ou monkeys finally made it and they named their giant metal fat stick after me but why 11 okay I think I must fist moon . Something like this.
I think the lesson to be taken from this is: If someone is way out of your league or doesn't reciprocate your feelings, that person came from the moon... or something.
Hearing about the emperor respecting her wishes and not forcing her into a relationship, as well as refusing immortality if it isn't with the person he loves is really sweet and exudes "That one kid in your class who never talks but has a huge crush on a girl but gets rejected at prom" energy. I knew somone like this at school. Rip your self confidence dude...
That's probably not the only version of the tale. But ya know, no one depicting the emperor as a bad person gets to live and keeping telling the tale for long.

The original myth doesn't really say, but in the INCREDIBLY AMAZING BEAUTIFUL GHIBLI MOVIE (seeitseeitseeit) basically she's a Bodhisattva, or at least on that level, but has gotten bored in Buddhist heaven because absolute perfection and tranquility is kinda samey. So she deliberately reincarnates as a human so that she can have some fun for awhile, only to find herself forced into the role of a proper courtly Princess, which is basically what she was trying to escape. (No, seriously, the Ghibli movie is incredibly good and I'm a little sad more people haven't seen it. I think they're either put off by the art style or the obscure folklore origins of the story, but either way, it's stunning.)
@@jasonblalock4429 Is that what happened in the end? Like the only things I can remember from that movie are the running away scene (AMAZING) and that my friend and I literally screamed when the emperor appeared out of nowhere.
Different versions of the myth give different explanations, one is that she was sent down to Earth as a punishment for some unexplained moon crime, another is that she was sent to Earth to keep her safe during some huge lunar war.
@@jasonblalock4429 Ghibli's Kaguya doesn't descend to earth just because she's bored and wants to have fun. She descends after becoming utterly fascinated with the lingering melancholy of the older moon lady she can not understand. Basically an entire plot device created by ghibli. *SPOILER* It's a blink and you miss it moment (and it took me a rewatch) but when Kaguya sings the sadder moon version of the maware maware song you can see two kids running towards the sea as the point of view drifts away and then a man and a younger kid watching a faint star above the sea from the cliffs, then Kaguya recalls she learned this sadder version from a melancholic woman on the moon. From all of this you can more or less infer that a celestial maidden descended to earth, fell in love with a man, had three kids, grew old while on earth and learned the folk song. Then something made her heart cry and a moon delegation came to "rescue" her (the faint "star" you see drifting away as her family helplessly watches). The moon woman lingering melancholy and the only thing she does not forget from her time on earth, the now sorrowful maware song (she adds the line "If I hear that you pine for me I will return to you"), fascinate Kaguya in the sea of sterility and enlighted monotony of the moon. She says herself she descended to earth to experience whatever the moon lady tragically tried to recall, to feel every emotion, love, joy, sorrow, anger, wonder, passion, happiness, to live among people and plants and beasts as the seasons change (all reflected in the lyrics of the original maware song), and to experience life in all its splendor even if it includes suffering. The ultimate tragedy of the movie is not just that she's taken away and forgets everything she experienced but also that on the moon she'll spend her days like the same woman that inspired her, desperately trying to remember as her family eventually passes away on earth. It's still nonetheless one of the most wonderful beautiful movies out there, about embracing life and everything it has to offer (and a bit of a middle finger to buddhism) and I absolutely agree with you in that more people should watch it. More people should watch all of Takahata movies in fact.
I always liked Touhou's take on Kaguya's impossible tasks. Ridiculous requests, yes, because of the magnitude, and also because *Kaguya already had all the treasures she was asking for.* All anyone had to do was ask "yo, you got that jeweled branch?" And she'd give it to them, then they could give it right back to her --- mission accomplished. Apparently her reasoning is that if anyone was actually smart/clever enough to think of trying that, they'd TOTALLY be worth keeping around as a spouse.
The Lunarian have all SORTS of crazy awesome shit up there. I think my favorite thing about that is the time that Yukari basicaly tricked everyone into starting a war with the Lunarians all so that Yuyuko could sneak into the royal palace and steal some of their amazing treasures but it was really all just a ruse to get Yukari drunk. Which, I mean, okay. Kinky.
Though it was Yuyuko idea to get the booze, and Yukari just roll with it. Girl know how to improvise, even when she's already win to spin up a victory speech.
That's a nice interpretation. But it was never said that was the case. Kaguya didn't want to marry anyone, and that's it. She didn't make up the requests as a logic challenge for the proposers. It was just the fastest way to get them stop going after her. Even if it meant any accidental death or dishonor for the guys.
Algamyst nice SSiB recap. The only wrong thing is that yukari didn't have in her plans to steal the sake, that was just yuyuko's idea at the last minute😂
Ah, Kaguya. Went from Princess of the Moon to Kinda (Immortal) Royalty who lives in a palace in the middle of a bamboo forest ruling over Earth and Moon Rabbits (only Moon Rabbits who defect to Earth) while fighting an immortal Phoenix Girl who *totally* doesn't hold a grudge against her for shaming her family. *shakes head*
Or a shut-in who lives with her nurse filled with rabbits on a bamboo forest and has a grudge with the lost daughter of the Fujiwara clan who is also immortal and shoot fire.
Whenever I think of the name "Princess Kaguya" I either get really sad or really angry because it makes me think of both the studio ghibli movie or my perpetual failure to beat Imperishable Night :^)
I think I remember reading something about Japanese kids not really getting names until they'd developed as people for a bit. Like, they'd have a nickname or whatever, but a *name* name didn't come until later and could be assigned appropriately. Also names could change later on in life, too, apparently. That being said, I'm pretty sure it's not common practice anymore.
Makes sense. But, if you think about it , Princess Kaguya did everything in her power to reject her suitors. Do you think a woman like that would give an immortality potion to the one she loved? I always think... that elixir was Princess Kaguya’s message, telling him, “I’ll come back for you some day.” Even if it would’ve taken more than one human lifespan... even if the distance between them was hopeless... I think she gave him the elixir of immortality imbuing it with the meaning “I’ll wait for you forever” But the man didn’t pick up on her message, so he said something moving and had the elixir burned. It’s a cruel story.
Nice idea, but Kaguya wouldn't remember him to come back. Whatever Kaguya wanted to accomplish with giving the emperor the elixir is rendered pointless the moment she dons her cloak.
Might be worth mentioning that Shirogane is named after the fourth suitor who gave up looking for the dragon jewel. You know, a jewel similar to the one that he used during the culture festival climax...
I actually really enjoyed watching Studio Ghibli's version of this myth. I mean, it wasn't completely accurate (there's an actual romance?) but... yeah. It was still heartbreaking and touching at the same time.
Technically, this is the cover story for that Kaguya. Of course, this requires the _Touhou_ syncretization of the moon with the dragon palace/Heaven to explain why she (as Omoikane [sorry for deadnaming you, Yagokoro-sensei]) was speaking to her on the moon in the first place.
For any Kaguya-sama: Love is War fan, many of the characters in the series are reference to this myth, for example, all of the members on the student concil, except for Kaguya, are name after the suitors: Miyuki Shirogane is name after the the fourth suitor, the one who attempted to find a dragon at sea, but abandoned his plans after encountering a storm. Yu Ishigami is name after the fifth suitor, his depressed personality based on the fact that his counterpart attempted to obtain a cowry shell from a swallow's nest, only to fall to his death with bird poop in his hand. Chika Fujiwara is name after the second suitor, Her habit of cheating during games is based on the fact that her counterpart attempted to present Princess Kaguya with a forgery of the jeweled branch, but his deception was revealed when the craftsmen arrived at Kaguya-hime's house to collect payment.
@@kasunex1772 Well kinda, but the actual character who is named after the emperor is Mikado Shijo, the brother of Maki and the only guy in the manga who outscored Miyuki in national exam results. It's slightly after the current anime arc but Mikado is the one guy that Shirogane actually feels threatened by, regardless of how he acts. But like in the myth, he and Kaguya are friends at best. Which is why Shirogane has an actual chance at this. Basically, since he's named after the only suitor who turned tail and gave up, while being himself someone who will literally work himself to... if not death, then still to some rather serious health concerns rather than giving up, this begs the question if the fourth suitor could have been successful had he not given up before the end. And because he is not the emperor, he is not narratively restricted to being rejected and burning the elixir, meaning he can forge a different path. It's an incredibly creative spin on the myth if you ask me.

Ah the heartwarming tale of a girl from the moon who did nothing of consequence except leave behind the elixir of life as a farewell present, only for it to be burned on top of Mt Fuji, presumably explaining why apples from that area are so fucking good... which I'm begining to suspect was the entire purpose of the story.
Personally if I were in the Emperor’s position, head over heels in love with a moon girl, tragically heartbroken and offered a chance at immortal life via a gift left behind by the moon girl, I would have accepted the immortality on the idea that if I lived long enough, maybe, just maybe, I’d see her again. That’s just me though, and I find no fault with the Emperor’s actual response here.
Also, the Moon is commonly associated with the Pure Lands (realm of the dead and enlightened) of Buddhist fame, so Kaguya "returning to the moon and forgetting all about her life on Earth" it's quite likely a metaphor for her dying and being embraced by the oblivion of death. They kinda went all-in with that interpretation in the Ghibli movie.
except for higher difficulties, but I suppose those are different impossible requests, like a salamander shield. but it's no surprise Omoikane is stronger than Kaguya... BTW fun fact, Eirin is canonically stronger than Kaguya but holds back to make Kaguya look better...

So imagine one of Kaguya's suitors had a vengeful daughter mad about Kaguya's rejection who managed to steal the elixir before it was burned, gained phoenix-esque fire powers, and wages an eternal war against the also immortal Kaguya. And by immortal, I mean stupidly so. Like, their existences are just not considered on the same plane of mortality as everyone else. Touhou is such a fun series.
When Red got to the point about the Emperor sending the Elixir to be destroyed, I couldn't help but think, "Ohhh, NOW I understand how the stuff was running around for Mokou to steal it!" As an added bonus, Touhou also gets into the end-credits question of what the Lunarians think of the Apollo missions.
the story of touhou 8 imperishable night was just based off of the tale of princess kaguya, but it's not where it originated. mokou and eirin replacing the moon are some of the added parts to the story

Couple fun facts about Mount Fuji bit at the end: according to folk etymology, the name of the mountain comes from either "immortal" (不死, fushi, fuji) - since the Emperor asked to burn the elixir here - or "abundant" (富, fu) "soldiers" (士, shi, ji), after procession of troops to deliver it. Also, the fact that elixir is still burning was sometimes used to explain volcanic activity and why there's a smoke coming from the mountain sometimes. The more you know
I really like the Touhou series take on the myth of princess Kaguya and her relationship with the emperor. Or better saying, with the daughter of the emperor

A more culturally appropriate translation would be "I have an undying love for you" which sounds a lot more dramatic and vaguely creepy. Which is pretty fitting all things considered.
I actually liked the Ghibli Version of Princess Kaguya. It was a very bittersweet and tragic story about how the Princess Kaguya was as a tragic character with flaws of her own despite being a celestial being. The interpretation might have upset some people and made the plot a little more complicated then it should but I thought it was a good film with an amazing art direction.
Kubos mom in the two strings was a prettty cool reference to this story as well. Her sister have deathee cloaks and the moon king wants to take kubo to the moon and make him forget his love for humanity, pretty cool integration of the last bit of the story.
Turns out Kaguya did not reject the emperor he was just too much of a tsun that he couldn’t confess so she played hard-to-get so went to live on the moon
Funnily enough, I clearly remember a scene in which he swallows a sword only to throw it up in a later episode to use it in a fight. So, he does have one.
@@drecellthealive8912 Well, it wasn't in his butt, so I don't think it counts. Or maybe he does have another sword in his ass. With someone like Orochimaru, you can never know.
The sad thing is, what Red was referencing (the *Orochi)* was not what Orochimaru was based on. Orochimaru (as well as Jiraiya and Tsunade) were based on the characters of the same name (who are also three ninjas with magic powers) from a 19th Century Japanese Folktale, and the Orochimaru in the show is very similar to the Orochimaru in the folktale, right down to having serpent-based powers.
@@demonking-zm3rs Okay... how does that contradict my point (you started your statement with "but", so I assume you're trying to make a counterargument) My point is that he was directly based on the folkloric Orichimaru, not the Orochi, and that's true regardless of the reveal of his true form having become that of the Orochi as a result of his experiments and body-swapping jutsu. Also, I'm not even sure if what you just said is correct; his true form is that of a white snake with a human head, but I don't recall it every being referred to as the Orochi.

THEN WHY THE HELL WAS SHE EVEN ON EARTH IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
@@mori6434 Yep. And man, that heavenly procession was just creepy. They did an amazing job making it really feel otherworldly.
*SPOILER*
It's a blink and you miss it moment (and it took me a rewatch) but when Kaguya sings the sadder moon version of the maware maware song you can see two kids running towards the sea as the point of view drifts away and then a man and a younger kid watching a faint star above the sea from the cliffs, then Kaguya recalls she learned this sadder version from a melancholic woman on the moon.

I was surprised that touhou started this far down lmao
Kinky.
That's actually really smart or at least it seems to me
Though it was Yuyuko idea to get the booze, and Yukari just roll with it.

I think she gave him the elixir of immortality imbuing it with the meaning “I’ll wait for you forever”
But the man didn’t pick up on her message, so he said something moving and had the elixir burned. It’s a cruel story.

Came here after watching the Kaguya-Sama where they talk about the myth and needed the official synopsis.
Might be worth mentioning that Shirogane is named after the fourth suitor who gave up looking for the dragon jewel. You know, a jewel similar to the one that he used during the culture festival climax...
That Ending cover is making me swoon. I love "Fly Me To The Moon(In Other Words)"

Yeah, the Ghibli version of Kaguya is easily one of the greatest animated films of the last decade, an absolute masterpiece.
Also Kubo and the two strings also drew inspiration here, good film, watch it if you haven’t. It was horribly overlooked.
I loved Kubo and the Two Strings. Never realised that’s where the inspiration came from. Thanks
With a subtle Lovecraftian undertone in Kubo, honestly.

For any Kaguya-sama: Love is War fan, many of the characters in the series are reference to this myth, for example, all of the members on the student concil, except for Kaguya, are name after the suitors:
Miyuki Shirogane is name after the the fourth suitor, the one who attempted to find a dragon at sea, but abandoned his plans after encountering a storm.
And Aí Hayasaka(Kaguya’s maid) is based on the entity that came to take her back to the moon and gave her the cloak
Shirogane also has some elements of the Emperor, especially taking his place with the immortality potion bit.

At least you aren't sitting through a trilogy of family members killing each other simply as backdrop for the formation of a legal system.
I love how the third suitor just imagines the impossible task of begging Inuyasha to give him his robe of the fire rat to get a girl!
I was looking for a comment who mentioned that! That was hilarious, especially Inuyasha's confused face like "wtf do you think you're doing?"

Also, the fact that elixir is still burning was sometimes used to explain volcanic activity and why there's a smoke coming from the mountain sometimes.

The Moon Landing wasn't in 1969... it was in 1000 BCE.
damn Kaguya-sama: love is war got a whole new meaning now...
Especially with the Shinomiya's motto of "don't love people"
That is entirely intentional.
Always has been.
How cute
“Daughter of the silver, moon.”
"I wonder what Kaguya thinks of the Apollo missions" well Kaguya doesn't care but Eirin and Reisen have some opinions.
It also inspired a character from Touhou! I'm so happy !
Ah, so that's where "Kubo and the Two Strings" get's it's backstory from.
