    Even though you know I’m not a LS fan I have rebuilt many engines. Respectfully I don’t think you have a compression issue. The minimum compression in any one cylinder should not be less than 70 percent of the highest cylinder. No cylinder should read less than 690 kPa (100 psi). For example, if the highest pressure in any one cylinder is 1035 kPa (150 psi), the lowest allowable pressure for any other cylinder would be 725 kPa (105 psi). (1035 x 70% = 725) (150 x 70% = 105). I do think that if you don’t find a bent pushrod you’ll find the bottom end is knocking because of it being driven with one or both head gasket being blown. I’m looking forward to your discovery. PS don’t send that engine out to be rebuilt. Do it yourself. JR you definitely have the skill set to build it. Let us watch that content. Thanks.

    Change the oil for the transmission and differential. Those are also most likely contaminated with flood water esp that water went up into the crankcase.

    First thing I would have done is dump the oil, change the filter, fill it up with cheap oil and a bottle of marvel mystery oil. Run it for a while, 30 - 60 minutes or so. Let it cool, then do the compression test and anything else you want to check, do (new plugs, wires).
    If it seems ok, dump the oil and filter again. Put new oil and filter in, maybe some Lucas oil stabilizer too. If it doesn't make any bad noises just drive it. Watch for any coolant getting in the oil again... If not and it runs well and makes good power go with that and decide if your keeping it or selling it and do another oil and filter change in 500 miles...

    I ran into a similar situation long ago. Engine ingested water and hydrolocked. Bent one rod, in turn shortening the stroke on that cylinder. Thus lowering the compression. The shortened rod causing the bottom of the piston to contact counterweight on crankshaft every revolution. The bearings were fine. Good luck.

  • @supercariobros
    @supercariobros 3 роки тому +19

    It would be worth changing the oil a few times and running some Lucas to see if it quiets down and regains its compression. That tapping didn't increase in volume with revs, just taps.
    For the people?

  • @lorad350
    @lorad350 3 роки тому +10

    when it ingested the water, one of the cylinders, probably the one with low compression, suffered a bent rod. (Makes the stroke shorter). The bent rod is hitting the bottom of the cylinder every revolution making the noise. Milky oil may be because they haven't changed the oil since this happened. Doesn't take a lot of water to make it milky. Let it set for a few days, the water should settle to the bottom and catch it when you drain the oil to see how much.

    The reason it is hard to remove plugs from aluminium heads is often the plugs were put in when the head was hot.
    You should never fully torque plugs or fasteners in hot aluminium. You will either destroy the threads trying to undo them or the threads will strip when the metal cools down.

    Quite common for head gasket failure between cylinders 5 and 7 since they fire so close together, especiallyif it overheated (new radiator???). Not sure why you would continue troubleshooting once you determined it had water in the oil though. Not what I would've done, especially since I recently repaired a Jeep 4.7 that sucked up water (owner tried driving it through deep water) but that's just me, the one who's sitting in a recliner.

    You need to do the timing light trick. I know it doesn't have a distributor, but it will still work. Hook up to any plug wire, run engine. See if noise is in time with light or double the light. In time= upper end, double time the light= bottom end.

    Hey JohnRoss, there's a guy in Saint Louis that has a UA-cam channel that might be a good source for a used engine. Check with him first because he tests the engines and warranties them. "I Do Cars" is his channel and Eric is his name. Everyone says he's Adam Sandler's long lost twin brother but I don't see it. Check with him. Looks like a head gasket is leaking coolant into the oil and it spun a rod bearing. The new radiator also sorta supports that theory. Backyard mechanic tossing parts at it when it is over heating... How full was the coolant reservoir? If the gasket goes at the right spot, it will just leak into the oil and not smoke at all.

    Cool video JR ! I hope you will get this vett back on the road soon. It’s a really nice car that doesn’t need a lot of work put into it except for the engine of course and it sounds like that’s not going to be that expensive to rebuild. On another note, you had talked about the wind blowing through your building. When I worked in a similar building with a vent fan , the wind would blow through it causing the building to get very cold in winter. I came up with the idea to make a frame with some thick insulation board and I screwed it to the frame of the vent so the wind couldn’t blow through it. This helped keep the building warmer and saved on the heating bill as well. You might want to give that a try and save some money and stay warmer at the same time. Thanks!

    One other thing you can do to maybe help narrow down the noise to a particular cylinder is run the engine with the spark plug out of the suspected cylinder and see if the knock goes away due to the rod/piston assembly having a lot less load on it. It doesn't work every time but it's another diagnostic tool for the bag. On cars with hard to reach spark plugs disabling fuel injectors with a scan tool will reveal the cylinder with a knock sometimes as well, assuming it's a rod knock/wrist pin noise of course. Also works on diesels with fuel knock issues due to a bad injector(s).

  • @smarternu
    @smarternu 3 роки тому +1

    A SMALL bend in a push rod will not be visible, but it will make a tick sound. You need to compress a valve and spin the push rod on the other valve. Pull the pan and check your rod bearings after the valves.

  • @MikeOn2Wheels

    Leaking compression through a blown head gasket possibly. My guess would be around cylinder 7 since it was down on compression and/or possibly cylinder 1 that you couldn’t fit the compression tester on since we don’t know how much it had. The “water” came from somewhere and the likely culprit is the cooling system.

      I feel like it’s suspect that the previous owner knowingly swamped the motor, and made zero attempt to change fluids, just sold it. You would think they would try draining the fluids at minimum before giving up. Especially considering the guy mentioned it being at a shop and it has a new radiator, why not $20 in oil. I would change the oil and filter first and check out why that one wire seemed to not feel seated. Also the yellow mustard you found in the oil fill area is common when an engine has a long filler neck extension and the car doesn't go more then a 3 or 4 mile trip in cold weather. My 68 dodge dart use to do that and my ford truck does it now. The engine needs to get heated up more and burn off the steam.

    JR. Dont forget the engine was flooded. Thats were the water came from. First drain the oil clean with 2 gallons of water 40. Put new oil in and replace the pushrods on the low cylinder. You won't be able to see a marginal pushrod. If that doesn't work go deep. Good stuff.

  • @tysoncurrie7745

    I would still check the push rods, it could be just bent a little bit just enough to create the tick tick and you won't be able to see it in the rocker arms, and it would make sense when the one cylinder is a little lower on compression. See how much play the rocker arms have when the valves are completely closed in the lower compression cylinder and also stick a bore camera in that cylinder to see if there is something wrong with the cylinder or it hade contact with a valve.

    I am almost certain that the noise in this engine is gonna be a Failed Hydraulic Lifter or Bent push rod, Potentially both.
    Sounds exactly like a 5.3 I recently had in the shop that had a single failed lifter on CYL 3, Replaced all the lifters and that truck purrs like a kitten now.
    There was some cam lobe scoring as the roller had failed on the lifter, Normally id replace the cam but the customer insisted against it, it has been almost 2 years since then and it still runs fine no issues.

    thinking the low cyl has a bent rod -shorter stroke=lower compression-

    Stick something measurey in the spark plug hole and note the piston stroke length on the suspect side. Results should be rather obvious if one or more is not making the full stoke up.

    When you were cranking the engine over I did not see any oil coming out of the rockers on either side you may want to make sure that you have good oil pressure first!

    Turn crank, rods, rings and a hone. Send the bottom end out, and refresh the top end. Valve seals lap valves, and have the heads decked and inspected. Cheap-cheap, it’ll be a runner for sure. I also selfishly want to see what an oil flush and fill would do, maybe with some Seafoam. Though it sounds a bit more like a rod knock, I’d love to see a lazy lifter come back to life.

    Frothed oil milkshake doesn't drain into the pan, but cakes up like butter. Crank hits the oil butter and knocks (might explain why crank got stuck when testing). Knock sounds faster than single piston idle speed to me and not that sort of metal clank. Oil change/flush would give you some idea of what is hitting what. There is probably damage,, but like you say an LS should run even with a bit of damage, unless the crank is buttered up.

    If I could rebuild the engine in Watch JR Goes Corvette I would drink the shot of whiskey and the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.

    My late, former landlord, and friend special ordered, as soon as the model was announced, a 2000 Corvette with all the bells, whistles, and top of the line trim. Sadly, it would be the last new vehicle he ever purchased before passing away. But here is the rest of the story. The damn thing apparently had a vacuum buried somewhere in it that sucked water directly from the roadway and atmosphere and directed it into the engine. Two engines ended up in even worse condition than the one in your Corvette appears to be and it was only after the THIRD crate engine was installed (under threat of a massive lawsuit...Which my landlord could easily afford since he carried more money in his pants pockets than some 3rd Word countries had in the bank) and ALL the fluids in everything that was supposed to have fluids in it was flushed and said fluids replaced. He loved that red everything Corvette but never trusted it after the third engine was installed and would not drive, or allow it to be driven, even on a foggy day (I ain't pullin' your chain on that one!)!!!! Following his passing in July of 2012, his oldest son, who inherited his entire estate, took a trip to Myrtle Beach with his wife.....In a rainstorm that lasted for about the first eighty miles or so. Thanks to AAA and a rental car, they were able to have that Corvette towed back home and complete their vacation. Since the only Corvette I've ever lusted after was the split window model (yeah, I'm that old and clearly clueless) I have no idea what the deal is/was with the "water injection" feature that the 2000 model Corvette apparently came equipped with. I'm looking forward to future videos covering your Corvette as it brings back memories of a good man and friend of mine.

    It doesn't sound like its in the bottom end. Even though the pushrods may look ok from the top they may be bent at the lifter. A collapsed lifter may also be possible. I would start with looking at the pushrods.

    I have a good feeling about this. The 2K was the srart of a new era for vette. My friends new one stuck to the road like glue and the ride was smooth. After a K#N filter and a chip it was even better.

    While you have it apart you should do aftermarket rods and pistons. Look at mazspeeding rods. I made 600 wheel and 30 psi on them for 8 months before I dropped a valve. Also do heads and a cam because why not.

    Look at all that tree debris at base of the windshield. Somebody left that under a tree for a while.
    I think someone mistook the Corvette for an S2000 (completely different car, an enthusiast could never make that mistake, but a dipstick with a heavy foot would) revved that poor LS1 to a million rpms and broke it. Congrats on another JRGO broken car rescue.
