Love this style - so delicate looking. Looks like it is lace and made from thread rather than yarn - so pretty!
It could be a thread. The yarn (or thread) I used was a thrift store find and there was no information with it, so it's really just a guess what it is! :)

Wonderful! You may want to consider doing a chain 7 in the corners, rather than a chain 8. I found this once I starting joining the motifs together for the scarf tutorial which will be published Sunday.

ETA: I made my UA-cam profile picture and cover photo images of the toddler cardigan!🥰 It took 10 squares for a size 18-24month.
Looove this pattern and tutorial! So easy and fun once you get it, and quick to work up. I made an adorable cardigan for my toddler out of them using a chunkier velvet/furry yarn and a 5mm hook and I love the way it turned out. My first ever clothing piece!! In two days It took me about 4-5 hours of work time including sewing together and hiding ends.. would’ve been shorter if I worked faster and made less mistakes lol. Just have to watch your tension keep it nice and relaxed/loose to keep it laying flat and open. Wish we could post pics!! I’m about to make another for my older daughter and then one for myself. Thanks so much for this wonderful tutorial!

I love this pattern! I love the lace effect it gives.
I'm new to crochet, and have noticed that a lot of granny square patterns use a slip stich of the series of chain stitches to get to the next round. But why not use a double crochet instead of the chains?
It is a subtle but important difference. In this pattern, you want the clusters to be in the chain spaces. If the first stitch starts on top of the dc from the previous row, that cluster will look different than the others because it is not in the same place. Slip stitching to the correct starting point is why that technique is used.

I worked this up last night and loved how it turned out! I ended up adding a round of regular double crochets (not clustered) so I can attach it to another square easier!

Can you make this bigger by adding more rows?
Absolutely! You can repeat round 3, but you will have to increase your stitches in each consecutive round, otherwise, the motif will curl up. You can do this by adding chains in the chain spaces and/or adding more clusters. I don't have an exact pattern, but just play around with it!

You can use a number 4 medium-weight yarn and a larger crochet hook to make a larger motif. If you wanted more rounds, that would be an addition to the pattern. You are welcome to do this if you like.
