From the point of view of an observer who comes from the "Western Hemisphere" where China is presented as a country where the citizens are denied everything that seems worth living in, one can only look in amazement at how happy, free and apparently quite worth living the life of the Chinese is, at least in the metropolises appears! All I can say, Chinese, is that you can be proud of your country and of your leadership, even if there are certainly points of criticism and improvements. In countries that like to criticize your government like a high school teacher, they probably only do so out of stupid ignorance of how far you have come in the meantime. Your mix of bread and butter and stick seems to work much better for the majority of the population than in countries that have taken up the cause of maximum freedom for every citizen and are becoming entangled in increasingly inefficient processes. You Chinese walk on the better path.
Chinese here. It's honestly a trade-off. Ultimately it depends on what your values are. China often gets portrayed as this crazy 1984 communist state and while the government DOES censor and manipulate news quite a lot, so does the US (think Fox News). Sure people in China may not have complete freedom of expression but they also don't have to worry about things like gun violence and mass-shootings. At the same time, the Chinese government can get away with doing anything they want if they choose (like jailing oneof the biggest real-estate tycoons for life just for posting a negative comment about them on social media). It's silly to say that one is more corrupt or problematic than the other because every country and political system has its flaws. Personally, I believe that you should live in a society with values you believe in and where you personally feel safe.
As someone that doesn't live in the USA nor China, but has been to many countries in the region, I can offer an unbiased view. China built a lot of cool things and elevated a lot of living standards. However, and you can't really argue with this, but, why is youtube blocked in China? Viet Nam also has a Communist government, but Viet Namese have less restrictions, for example, can watch youtube or use google. The entire top leadership of Viet Nam at the moment got their education in Moscow, most of them can even speak Russian to some degree, so I don't blame Communism itself like most people from USA like to do.
